The effects of compressor design conditions on the off-design performance of a single-shaft gas turbine engine have been studied. Three different geometric design conditions are considered and three different values for the specific mass flow rate at the inlet to the compressor are assumed. For each of nine compressor design, the off-design performance of the gas turbine engine is predicted using the method previously proposed by present authors. Results show that the predicted off-design performances are quite different from each other even though they have the same performance at design point: it means that compressor design conditions should be determined in consideration of the off-design performance of the engine. The specific mass flow rate at the inlet to the compressor is also shown that it might be optimized with respect to the net power of the engine.

Cooling tower design procedure was set up using conventional Merkel theory, The design data could be different depending on the characteristic curve that the engineer chose. It reveals that the consistent and reasonable criteria are required based on the exact information of the cooling tower Performance. In this study, an off-design performance analysis program for a counterflow-type cooling tower was developed and verified by comparing with experimental data. Also, the off-design performance with various operating conditions was analyzed.

In this study, the validity of reducing the number of gas turbine stages designed for a nitrogen Brayton cycle coupled to a sodium-cooled fast reactor was assessed. The turbine performance was evaluated through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations under different off-design conditions controlled by a reduced flow rate and reduced rotational speed. Two different multistage gas turbines designed to extract almost the same specific work were selected: two- and three-stage turbines (mid-span stage loading coefficient: 1.23 and 1.0, respectively). Real gas properties were considered in the CFD simulation in accordance with the Peng-Robinson's equation of state. According to the CFD results, the off-design performance of the two-stage turbine is comparable to that of the three-stage turbine. Moreover, compared to the three-stage turbine, the two-stage turbine generates less entropy across the shock wave. The results indicate that under both design and off-design conditions, increasing the stage loading coefficient for a fewer number of turbine stages is effective in terms of performance and size. Furthermore, the Ellipse law can be used to assess off-design performance and increasing exponent of the expansion ratio term better predicts the off-design performance with a few stages (two or three).

A design procedure for cooling towers was set up using the Merkel theory In the past, the design data could be different depending on the characteristic curve that the engineer adopted. Therefore, consistent and reasonable criteria are required, which are based on the exact information of the cooling tower performance. In this study, analysis program for both the design and off-design for a counterflow-type cooling tower was developed and verified by comparing with experimental data. The off-design performance with various operating conditions was analyzed, as well.
A liquid rocket engine goes through many tests to prove its performance before liftoff. It means the tests for setting ignition and start-up conditions or a test on design condition, which verifies the design performance. However, the development process requires verification of performance under off-design conditions through tests involving different operating conditions, which affects the duration of engine development. The off-design performance test is performed by altering the conditions of the propellant supplied to the engine in conjunction with the engine performance test that varies the opening of the control valves in the engine. This paper is based on the results of the engine tests performed at the KSLV-II engine test facilities in the Naro Space Center and describes the operations of the test facility for off-design condition test that changes the inlet conditions of the turbo-pump due to changes in the pressure and temperature of the propellant supplied to the test engines.

Severe radial thrust under off-design operating conditions can be a harmful factor for centrifugal pumps. In the present work, effects of geometry of a double volute casing on the hydrodynamic performance of a centrifugal pump have been investigated focusing on off-design conditions. Three-dimensional steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis was carried out by using shear stress transport turbulence model. Numerical results for the hydrodynamic performance of the centrifugal pump were validated compared with experimental data. The hydraulic efficiency and radial thrust coefficient were used as performance parameters to evaluate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the centrifugal pump. The cross-sectional area ratio of the volute casing, the expansion coefficient of the rib structure, the distance between the rib starting point and volute entrance, and radius and width of the volute entrance, and length of the rib structure, were selected as geometric parameters. Results of the parametric study show that the performance parameters are significantly affected by the geometric variables and operating conditions. Optimal configurations of the double volute casing based on the design of experiments technique show outstanding performance in terms of the efficiency and radial thrust coefficient.
Flow structures in an axial compressor with a non-uniform tip clearance were predicted by solving a simple prediction method. For more reliable prediction at the off-design condition, off-design flow characteristics such as loss and flow blockage were incorporated in the model. The predicted results showed that flow field near the design condition is largely dependent on the local tip clearance effect. However overall flow field characteristics are totally reversed at off-design condition, especially at the high flow coefficient. The tip clearance effect decreases, while the local loss and flow blockage make a complicated effect on the compressor flow field. The resultant fluid induced Alford's force has a negative value near the design condition and it reverses its sign as the flow coefficient increases and shows a very steep increase as the flow coefficient increases.
Micro gas turbines are designed with low turbine inlet temperature and pressure ratio. To overcome the efficiency defect of the simple cycle, adoption of the recuperator is an inevitable choice. In addition to the design performance, we should also pay attention to the off-design performance of gas turbines since they usually operate at part-load conditions lot a considerable amount of their lifetime. This study analyzes off-design performance characteristics of micro gas turbines and addresses the importance of the recuperation process doting the part load operation. Comparative analyses have been performed to evaluate the part load performance differences among various design and operating options : simple vs recuperative cycles, single vs two shaft configurations, various operating strategies for the single shaft configuration, and current vs advanced engines. Major finding is that maintaining high turbine exhaust temperature is crucial for efficient operation of micro gas turbines.

The variable demand on the energy market requires a great flexibility in operating hydro turbines. However, Francis turbine operated at off-design conditions poses technical challenges related to large unsteady forces given by residual swirl and angular momentum. In order to improve the performance of a Francis turbine, the paper presents a numerical investigation of the 3D flow in the turbine at off-design conditions and discusses the influence of variable guide vane openings on the internal flow of a Francis turbine with the help of computational fluid dynamics. First, the internal flow characteristics of Francis turbine operated by varied guide vane angle at off design condition are computed and the optimal guide vane angle is obtained. Secondly, the Francis turbine is operated with guide vane number varies at the optimal guide vane angle. Finally, pressure contours and velocity distributions in the distributor are discussed and compared.
