  • The blades of flexible propellers are formed by overlaying and adhering many layers of thin glass-fiber fabric sheets, are compressed and dried in the rigid mold. The current manufacturing process can not avoid the rather irregular deformation of the blades composed of non-isotropic non-uniform fabric structures, and inevitably introduces the different shape-forming errors between blades. In this paper, several flexible model propellers are precisely measured with three-dimensional optical instrument and compared with the original design geometry. The model propellers with the as-measured geometry are evaluated with the lifting-surface-theory-based propeller analysis code. The open-water performance are presented and discussed. The importance of the manufacturing accuracy is addressed to be able to apply the flexible propellers for propulsion of marine vehicles.

  • This paper focuses on the estimation of local ice loads exerted from ship-ice interaction processes. The Korean IBRV ARAON was used to perform field ice trials during her 2015 Arctic voyage. During ARAON's general ice transit, a total of 72 channels of data from both strain gauges on the inner hull plates and those installed on the transverse frames of the ARAON's bow section structures were analyzed to calculate the local ice loads. The local ice loads estimated from the analysis of the shear strain data measured on the side frames were compared to those from the hull plate pressures.

  • This paper provides the structure of a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) based simulation method and its validation results for the ship motion problem. The motion information of the hull computed from the equations of motion is considered in the momentum equations as the relative fluid motions with respect to a non-inertial coordinates system. A finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations, while the free surface is captured by using a two-phase level-set method and the realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. For the validation of the present numerical approach, the numerical results of the resistance and motion tests for DTMB 5415 at two ship speeds are compared against available experimental data.

  • This study focuses on the comparison of measured data from 6-DOF motion sensor and strain gauge installed in the IBRV ARAON during 2015 summer voyage in the Arctic. Procedures to calculate the global ice load from MotionPak II inertial measurement system and the local load from stain gauge system are discussed. The ship's speed and peak load are determined in the concept of an ice collision "event". It is found that the peak values in the global ice calculated form whole ship motion analysis fall in the range of 1.5~3 times of the local ice load based in strain gauge measurement.

  • Modeling a nonlinear ocean wave is one of the primary concerns in ocean engineering and naval architecture to perform an accurate numerical study of wave-structure interactions. The high-order spectral (HOS) method, which can simulate nonlinear waves accurately and efficiently, was investigated to see its capability for nonlinear wave generation. An open-source (distributed under the terms of GPLv3) project named "HOS-ocean" was used in the present study. A parametric study on the "HOS-ocean" was performed with three-hour simulations of long-crested ocean waves. The considered sea conditions ranged from sea state 3 to sea state 7. One hundred simulations with fixed computational parameters but different random seeds were conducted to obtain representative results. The influences of HOS computational parameters were investigated using spectral analysis and the distribution of wave crests. The probability distributions of the wave crest were compared with the Rayleigh (first-order), Forristall (second-order), and Huang (empirical formula) distributions. The results verified that the HOS method could simulate the nonlinearity of ocean waves. A set of HOS computational parameters was suggested for the long-crested irregular wave simulation in sea states 3 to 7.

  • This paper proposes an underwater localization algorithm using probabilistic object recognition. It is organized as follows; 1) recognizing artificial objects using imaging sonar, and 2) localizing the recognized objects and the vehicle using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter) based SLAM. For this purpose, we develop artificial landmarks to be recognized even under the unstable sonar images induced by noise. Moreover, a probabilistic recognition framework is proposed. In this way, the distance and bearing of the recognized artificial landmarks are acquired to perform the localization of the underwater vehicle. Using the recognized objects, EKF-based SLAM is carried out and results in a path of the underwater vehicle and the location of landmarks. The proposed localization algorithm is verified by experiments in a basin.

  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of a bluff cylinder oscillating along transverse direction in steady flow were experimentally investigated at Reynolds number of $2{\times}10^5$. The effects of non-dimensional frequency, oscillating amplitude and Reynolds number on drag force, lift force and phase angle are studied. Vortex shedding mechanics is applied to explain the experimental results. The results show that explicit similarities exist for hydrodynamic characteristics of an oscillating cylinder in high and low Reynolds number within subcritical regime. Consequently, it is reasonable to utilize the test data at low Reynolds number to predict vortex induced vibration of risers in real sea state when the Reynolds numbers are in the same regime.

  • One of the most important factors in sailing yacht design is accurate velocity prediction. Velocity prediction programs (VPP's) are widely used to predict velocity of sailing yachts. VPP's, which are primarily based on experimental data and experience of long years, however suffer limitations when applied in realistic conditions. Thus, in the present study, a high fidelity velocity prediction method using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was proposed. Using the developed method, velocity and attitude of a 30 feet sloop yacht, which was developed by Korea Research Institute of Ship and Ocean (KRISO) and termed KORDY30, were predicted in upwind sailing condition.

  • The increased interest in the design of energy efficient ships post IMO regulation on enforcing EEDI has encouraged researchers to reevaluate the numerical methods in predicting important hull design parameters. The prediction of added resistance and stability of ships in the rough sea environment dictates selection of ship hulls. A 3D panel method based on Green function is developed for vessel motion prediction. The effects of parametric instability are also investigated using the Volterra series approach to model the hydrostatic variation due to ship motions. The added resistance is calculated using the near field pressure integration method.
