This paper describes a floating fish reef technology for enhancement of fisheries productivity in the muddy areas. The floating fish reef was composed of main fish cage, anchor rope and concrete anchor blocks. Main fish cage was made up of 12 steel buoys measuring 0.37m in diameter and 1.5m long, polyethylene (PE) netting and circular steel rings. Each steel buoy had buoyancy of 110kgf. The size of main fish cage was 1.96 m in diameter and 3.75m in length. Monitoring on its durability was made for eight months after installation. The steel buoys fixed on main fish cage and nettings were observed to be kept safely. The wet weight of fouling organisms per unit area$(m^2)$ was 26.6kgf after eight months. Reduction in the cross-section of steel buoys and circular steel rings of main fish cage were not found. In addition, any cracks on the concrete anchor blocks were not observed.
The numerical investigation of obliquely incident wave interactions with fully submerged dual buoy/porous-membrane floating breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing is studied based on linear potential theory and Darcy's law. The numerical solutions are obtained by using a discrete-membrane dynamic model and second-kind modified Bessel function distribution over the entire boundaries of fluid regions. First, numerical solutions for an idealized dual submerged system without buoys are obtained. Second, a more practical dual submerged system with membrane tension provided by buoys at its tops is investigated by the multi-domain boundary element method particularly devised for dual buoy/porous-membrane problems with gaps. The velocity potentials of wave motion are coupled with porous-membrane deformation, and solved simultaneously since the boundary condition on porous-membrane is not known in advance. The effects of varying permeability on membranes and wave characteristics are discussed for the optimum design parameters of systems previously studied. The inclusion of permeability on membrane eliminates the resonances that aggravate the breakwater performance. The system is highly efficient when waves generated by the buoys and membranes were mutually canceled and its energy at resonance frequency dissipates through fine pores on membranes.
Several validation studies have been made for QuikSCAT(QSCAT) wind data around the world, mainly in the offshore. However, until now, there were no validation studies for QSCAT wind with resolution of 12.5 km ('QSCAT 12.5 km wind') in the vicinity of Korean Peninsula. To validate 'QSCAT 12.5 km wind' and to investigate its characteristics around Korean Peninsula, the wind data from Ieodo Ocean Research Station, KMA buoys, and KORDI Realtime Observation Stations have been compared. Validation results showed that 'QSCAT 12.5 km wind' RMSE of wind direction and speed were $25.85^{\circ}$ and 1.83 m/s, respectively, at Ieodo Station. The mean wind speed correlation coefficient of KMA buoys and KORDI Realtime Observation Station were 0.78 and 0.61, and the mean wind speed RMSE were 2.2 m/s and 3.2 m/s, respectively. This seems to be mainly because of the distance between QSCAT and in-situ observation stations. The RMSE of wind direction were bigger than $40^{\circ}$ at all in-situ observation stations located near the shore, within 20 km from coastlines. Geophysical features where in-situ observation stations are located seem to affect wind validation scores.
This study investigates the accuracy of short-term ocean predictions during the development of ocean stratification for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) as well as the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on the predictions through a series of sensitive numerical experiments. Model performance is evaluated using the marine meteorological buoys at seas around the Korean peninsular (KP), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) buoys over the tropical Pacific ocean, and ARGO floats data over the western North Pacific for boreal winter (February) and spring (May). Sensitive experiments are conducted using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model (i.e., GloSea5) and an uncoupled ocean model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, NEMO) and their results are compared. The verification results revealed an overall good performance for the SST predictions over the tropical Pacific ocean and near the Korean marginal seas, in which the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were $0.31{\sim}0.45^{\circ}C$ and $0.74{\sim}1.11^{\circ}C$ respectively, except oceanic front regions with large spatial and temporal SST variations (the maximum error reached up to $3^{\circ}C$). The sensitive numerical experiments showed that GloSea5 outperformed NEMO over the tropical Pacific in terms of bias and RMSE analysis, while NEMO outperformed GloSea5 near the KP regions. These results suggest that the atmosphere-ocean coupling substantially influences the short-term ocean forecast over the tropical Pacific, while other factors such as atmospheric forcing and the accuracy of simulated local current are more important than the coupling effect for the KP regions being far from tropics during the development of ocean stratification.

As a method to understand the ecological habits around the artificial reef, various reports such as fishing gear survey, diving, sound survey, underwater CCTV and camera, etc. are reported. Among them, the sound survey method is carried out by installing an acoustic system on the ship and can be investigated regardless of the marine environment such as time constraints and turbidity. Such method, however, takes a lot of manpower and time as the ship travels at a constant speed. Investigations around artificial reefs are being conducted in an artificial way, and a lot of time and labor are consumed as such. Maritime buoys have been operated for various purposes such as route signs, weather observation, marine environment monitoring and defense monitoring for navigation safety in the past, but studies on monitoring systems for ecological habits and distribution of fish using marine buoys are remarkably insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to develop a system that allows users to directly monitor fish group detector data by estimating the distribution of fish groups around artificial reefs and using wireless communication at sea. In order to confirm the suitability of the maritime buoy used in this study, it was operated to compare data using LTE-equipped buoys capable of wireless communication and a data logger-type system buoy. Data transmission of buoys capable of LTE communication was carried out in a 10-minute ON, 10-minute OFF method due to the limitation of the power supply capacity, and data of the data logger-type buoy received full data. We compared and analyzed the data received from the two fish detectors. It is expected that real-time monitoring of the wireless buoy detection device using LTE will be possible through future research.
We have persistently constructed gridded products of surface wind/wind stress over the world ocean using satellite scatterometer (ERS and Qscat). They are available for users as the Japanese Ocean Flux data sets with Use of Remote sensing Observation (J-OFURO) data together with heat flux components. Recently, a new version data of the Qscat/SeaWinds based on improved algorithm for rain flag and high wind-speed range have been delivered, and allowed us to reconstruct gridded product with higher spatial resolution. These products are validated by comparisons with in-situ measurement data by mooring buoys such as TAO/TRITON, NDBC and the Kuroshio Extension Observation (KEO) buoys, together with numerical weather prediction model products such as the NCEP-1 and 2. Results reveal that the new product has almost the same magnitude in mean difference as the previous version of Qscat product and much smaller than the NCEP-1 and 2. On the other hand, it is slightly larger root-mean-square (RMS) difference than the previous one and NCEPs for the comparison using the KEO buoy data. This may be due to the deficit of high wind speed data in the buoy measurement. The high resolution product, together with sea surface temperature (SST) one, is used to examine a new type of relationship between the lower atmosphere and upper ocean in the Kuroshio Extension region.
We investigate the performance of multi-body wave energy converters (WECs). This investigation considers multiple scattering of water waves by the buoys of a WEC under the generalized mode approach. Predominantly, the effect of a WEC's configuration on its energy extraction is studied in this research. First, single-row terminator and single-column attenuator arrays of vertical cylinders have been studied. The performance of these attenuator arrays shows that the wall effect induced by the periodic buoys influences the wave propagation and energy extraction in these WECs. Further studies show that a single-row terminator array of vertical cylinders performs better than the corresponding single-column attenuator array. Subsequently, multi-row terminator arrays of vertical cylinders are investigated by conducting a parametric study. This parametric study shows that the hydrodynamic property of three resonance phenomena makes energy extraction efficiency drop down, and the magnitude of energy extracted oscillates between the resonance points in these WECs. Finally, a 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders is studied to determine the effect of various dx (x-directional distance between adjacent rows) within this WEC on its performance. In particular, this study enforces at least two equal dx values within the 4×8 terminator array of vertical cylinders. It shows that a small value of this dx leads to better energy extraction efficiency in some of these various dx arrays than that of a corresponding regular array with the same dx.
In this study a tendency of abnormal sea surface temperature (SST) occurrence in the seas around South Korea is analyzed from daily SST data from satellite and 14 buoys from August 2020 to July 2021. As thresholds 28℃ and 4℃ are used to determine marine heatwaves(MHWs) and abnormal low water temperature (ALWT), respectively, because those values are adopted by the National Institute of Fisheries Science for the breaking news of abnormal temperature. In order to calculate frequency of abnormal SST occurrence spatially by using satellite SST, research area was divided into six areas of coast and three open seas. ALWT dominantly appeared over a wide area (7,745 km2) in Gyeonggi Bay for total 94 days and it was also confirmed from buoy temperature showing an occurrence number of 47 days. MHWs tended to be high in frequency in the coastal areas of Chungcheongdo and Jeollabukdo and the south coastal areas while in case of buoy temperature Jupo was the place of high frequency (32 days). This difference was supposed to be due to the low accuracy of satellite SST at the coasts. MHWs are also dominant in offshore waters around Korean Peninsula. Although detecting abnormal SST by using satellite SST has advantage of understanding occurrence from a spatial point of view, we also need to perform detection using buoys to increase detection accuracy along the coast.
