A study on multi-objective optimal design of derrick structure: Case study

  • Engineering system problems consist of multi-objective optimisation and the performance analysis is generally time consuming. To optimise the system concerning its performance, many researchers perform the optimisation using an approximation model. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is usually used to predict the system performance in many research fields, but it shows prediction errors for highly nonlinear problems. To create an appropriate metamodel for marine systems, Lee (2015) compares the prediction accuracy of the approximation model, and multi-objective optimal design framework is proposed based on a confirmed approximation model. The proposed framework is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of approximation model, and optimisation. The major objective of this paper is to confirm the applicability/usability of the proposed optimal design framework and evaluate the prediction accuracy based on sensitivity analysis. We have evaluated the proposed framework applicability in derrick structure optimisation considering its structural performance.

A Research on Dynamic Tension Response of Model Mooring Chain by Forced Oscillation Test (강제동요 시험을 이용한 모형 계류삭의 동적 응답 연구)

  • A series of forced oscillation test on model mooring chain was carried out to investigate dynamic tension characteristics. The model test was conducted at two different water depth to gather basic data for 'truncated mooring test' and 'hybrid mooring test'. The truncated and hybrid mooring test are highly recommended to overcome the limitation of water depth in model test recently. The resultant tension RAO gives good possibility of approximation of dynamic tension by equivalent weight adjustment for the ratio of water depth in different water depth. Because the hybrid mooring test is the adequate combination of model test and simulation, accurate simulation model on mooring system is essential. The simulation results show good agreement with model test results.

A Numerical Modeling Study on the Seasonal Variability in the Gulf of Alaska (알라스카 만의 계절변화에 대한 수치모형 실험)

  • Ocean circulation in the Gulf of Alaska is remarkably constant throughout the year despite of being forced by one of the largest seasonal wind stresses in the world. To explain the small seasonal changes in the transport of Alaska Stream. a set of numerical models is employed. First a diagnostic approach is applied to reproduce circulation from the observed density structure. The results reveals the very small seasonal changes in the Alaska Stream transport. Next a series of the prognostic models is used: a barotropic model. a flat bottom baroclinic model, and baroclinic model with topography. These models reveal the influence of topography and baroclinicity on the ocean's response to the seasonal wind forcing. The intercomparisons of the various model results suggest that the seasonal response of the baroclinic ocean is primary barotropic and the resultant barotropic circulation is weakened by the scattering effect of the bottom topography.

Wave Response Analysis and Future Direction of Mega-Float

  • In the country where the population concentrates in the metropolis with the narrow land, development of th ocean space is necessary. Recently, mega-float offshore structure is studied as one of the effective utilization of the ocean space. And very large floating structure are now being considered for various applications such as floating airports, offshore cities and so on. This very large structure is relatively flexible compared with real floating structures like large ships. when we estimate dynamic responses of these structures in waves, the elastic deformation is important, because vertical dimension is small compared with horizontal. And it is necessary to examine the effect of ocean wave eternal force received from the natural environment. In this study, the mat-type large floating structure is made to be analytical model. And the analysis of the dynamic response as it receives regular wave is studied. The finite element method is used in the analysis of structure part of this model. And the analysis is carried out using the boundary element method in the fluid part. In order to know the characteristics of the dynamic response of the large floating structures, effects of wavelength, bending rigidity of the structure, water depth, and wave direction on dynamic response of the floating structure are studied by use of numerical calculation.

  • A finite element analysis scheme is proposed to assess the dynamic response due to impulse excitation of ocean mining pipe system. Transient dynamic response analysis based on the proposed scheme was carried out for various types of impulses, and the magnitude of cable tension induced by impulse was discussed by using a model of 'Segero', a special purpose ship of KT-Submarine as well as ROV carrier 'Onnuri' A qualitative, prospective guideline for the relevant marine operation is obtained.

In order to know the characteristics of the dynamic response of the large floating structures, effects of wavelength, bending rigidity of the structure, water depth, and wave direction on dynamic response of the floating structure are studied by use of numerical calculation.

  • S2 module, which is one of the Korean type e-Navigation services, is a service concept that monitors the situation onboard and provides an emergency level determination and response guidance to the ship when an alarm occurs. S2 module is divided into fire/ seakeeping / navigation safety sub-module. In this paper, the concept of S2 service based on actual ship is explained through the response guidance case study of navigation safety module in case of abnormal condition in the passenger ship H.

  • In the present investigation, the hydrodynamic characteristics of a vertically floating hollow cylinder in regular waves have been studied. The potential theory for solving the diffraction and radiation problem was employed by assuming that the heave response motion was linear. By using the matched eigenfunction expansion method, the characteristics of the exciting forces, hydrodynamic coefficients, and heave motion responses were investigated with various system parameters such as the radius and draft of a hollow cylinder. In the present analytical model, two resonances are identified: the system resonance of a hollow cylinder and the piston-mode resonance in the confined inner fluid region. The piston resonance mode is especially important in the motion response of a hollow circular cylinder. In many cases, the heave response at the piston resonance mode is large, and its resonant frequency can be predicted using the empirical formula of Fukuda (1977). The present design tool can be applied to analyze the motion response of a spar offshore structure with a moon pool.
