PFFEM software, PFADS has been developed for the vibration predictions and analysis of coupled system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. PFFEM is numerical method which solves energy governing equation using finite element technique for complicated structures where the exact solutions are not available. Through the upgrades, present PFADS R3 could cover the general beam and plate structures including various kinds of beam-plate rigid joints and other joint systems such as spring-damper junction and rigid bar connection. This software is composed of 3 parts; translator, model converter and solver. The translator makes its own FE-model from bulk data of commercial FE software, and the model converter is used to convert FE-model to PFFE-model automatically. The solver calculates vibrational energy density and intensity for PFFE-model by solving global matrix equations of PFFEM. For the applications of real transportation systems, a container ship model has been examined with respect to major parameters, and reliable results have been obtained.
Many kinds of generation systems have been developed to use ocean energy. Among these, with the use of an oscillating water column (OWC) for power generation is attracting attention. The OWC-type wave power generation system converts wave energy into electricity by operating a generator turbine with the oscillating water level in a column of water. There are two ways to convert wave power into electricity using an OWC. One uses a cross-flow turbine using the water level inside the OWC. The other method uses the flow of air in a Wells turbine, which depends on the water level. An experiment was carried out using a 2-D wave tank in order to minimize the number of empirical tests. The design factors were taken from Koo et al. (2012) and the experimental environment assumed by free surface motion. This paper deals with characteristics of two types of wave energy conversion systems combine with a breakwater. One model uses an air-driven Wells turbine and a cross-flow water turbine. The other type uses a cross-flow water turbine. Wave energy converters with OWCs have mostly been studied using air-driven Wells turbines. The efficiency of the cross-flow turbine was about 15% higher than that of the other model, and the water level of the OWC internal chamber for the cross-flow water turbine and air-driven Wells turbine was less than about 40% lower than the one using only the cross-flow water turbine.

In this paper, the authors explore the modeling and control of a point absorber wave energy converter, which is connected to the electric grid via a power converter that is based on a linear permanent magnet synchronous generator (LPMSG). The device utilizes a buoyant mechanism to convert the energy of ocean waves into electrical power, and the LPMSG-based power converter is utilized to change the variable frequency and voltage output from the wave energy converter to a fixed frequency and voltage suitable for the electric grid. The article concentrates on the creation of a predictive control system that regulates the speed, voltage, and current of the LPMSG, and the modeling of the system to simulate its behavior and optimize its design. The predictive model control is created to guarantee maximum energy output and stable grid connection, using Matlab Simulink to validate the proposed strategy, including control side generator and predictive current grid-side converter loops.
Microalgae hold promise as a renewable energy source for the production of biofuel, as they can convert light energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis. However, cost-efficient harvest of microalgae remains a major challenge to commercial-scale algal biofuel production. We first investigated the potential of electrolytic water as a flocculant for harvesting Tetraselmis sp. Alkaline electrolyzed water (AEW) is produced at the cathode through water electrolysis. It contains mineral ions such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Mg^{2+}$ that can act as flocculants. The flocculation activity with AEW was evaluated via culture density, AEW concentration, medium pH, settling time, and ionic strength analyses. The flocculation efficiency was 88.7% at 20% AEW (pH 8, 10 min) with a biomass concentration of 2 g/l. The initial biomass concentration and medium pH had significant influences on the flocculation activity of AEW. A viability test of flocculated microalgal cells was conducted using Evans blue stain, and the cells appeared intact. Furthermore, the growth rate of Tetraselmis sp. in recycled flocculation medium was similar to the growth rate in fresh F/2 medium. Our results suggested that AEW flocculation could be a very useful and affordable methodology for fresh biomass harvesting with environmentally friendly easy operation in part of the algal biofuel production process.
An innovative design of a floating-buoy wave energy converter (WEC) using hydrostatic transmission (HST), named HSTWEC, is presented in this paper. The system is designed to convert ocean wave fluctuation into electricity by using the HST circuit and an electric generator. Based on the floating-buoy concept, the wave forces the sub-buoy to move up and down. Consequently, the electric power can be obtained from the generator in both the moving directions of the sub-buoy through the HST circuit as shown in Fig. 1. In order to investigate the HSTWEC operations, a mathematical model of the system is indispensible. In addition, the method to control the HSTWEC, including: pump displacement control, tension adjustment control and ballast weight control, is also discussed in this paper. Finally, the design concept as well as simulation results indicated that this HSTWEC design is an effective solution and possible to fabricate for wave energy generation.

Tidal current power system is one of ocean renewable energies that can minimize the environmental impact with many advantages compared to other energy sources. Not like others, the produced energy can be precisely predicted without weather conditions and also the operation rate is very high. To convert the current into power, the first device encountered to the incoming flow is the rotor that can transform into rotational energy. The performance of rotor can be determined by various design parameters including numbers of blade, sectional shape, diameter, and etc. The stream lines near the rotating rotor is very complex and the interference effects around the system is also difficult to predict. This paper introduces the experiment of rotor performance and also the effect of design parameter on the performance of HAT rotor by CFD.

A 50 kW class rotating body type wave energy converter consisted of two floating bodies and a PTO (Power Takeoff) unit is studied. As an wave energy extractor, the body is designed to have a VLCO (Variable Liquid-Column Oscillator) having a liquid filled U-tube with air chambers. Owing to the oscillation of the liquid in the U-tube caused by the air spring effect of the air chambers, the amplitude of response of the VLCO becomes significantly amplified for a target wave period. The PTO converts the rotational moment introduced from the relative motion of the hinged bodies to an hydraulic power by means of a cylinder. A high pressure accumulator, hydraulic motor and a generator are equipped in the PTO to convert the hydraulic power to electric power. A control law for adjusting the oscillation period of the VLCO is proposed for the efficient operation of the VLCO with various wave conditions. It is found that the effect of the air spring has an important role to play in making the oscillation of the VLCO match with the ocean wave. In this way, the wave energy converter equipped with the VLCO provides the most effective mode for extracting energy from the ocean wave.

In this paper, we establish an analysis algorithm and a design procedure for a Vane-Wheel which is a freely rotating device behind a propeller, by using a panel method. Vane-Wheel's function is to extract energy from the propeller slipstream in turbine part which is inner part of the Vane-Wheel, and convert this energy into an additional propulsive thrust in propeller part which is outer part of the Vane-Wheel. Two parts must satisfy torque balance and thrust has to act to the ship's forward direction. A Vane-Wheel has large interaction effect with propeller since it is placed behind of the propeller. Therefore, in order to consider interaction effect correctly, incoming velocity to the Vane-Wheel in a circumferential mean wake was calculated considering induced velocity from propeller to the Vane-Wheel. Likewise, incoming velocity to the propeller was calculated considering induced velocity from the Vane-Wheel to the propeller. This process is repeated until a converged result is obtained.
The wave power plant is a generating system to convert the wave energy resources to electric energy. ´CHUJEON A´, which is a prototype of wave power plant developed by KORDI(Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute), has been launched for its performance test. A wound rotor induction machine is adopted as a generator for the power plant to acquire constant frequency and voltage over wide range of rotor speed. Because the generator of ´CHUJEON A´ has no connection to the power grid line on land, all of the processes to generate and consume the electricity have to be conducted on the floating plant. This paper deals with the design and implementation of the unmanned control system for ´CHUJEON A´. The system includes generator control system, power conversion and charging system, data acquisition and wireless communication system ...
Recently, many studies about the wave power generation system for the marine structure as the hybrid form in linked with the original features have been made of. Of these, the wave power generation system using oscillating water column(OWC) has function to convert wave energy to electrical energy with original function of the break water structure. In this type of generation system, it is important to make the flow of sea water as much as possible without loss. Output characteristics of wave power generation system depending on entrance section were described in the paper. Also, flow quantity changing with entrance section, velocity of sea water and output of wells turbine were measured by simulating OWC wells turbine model in break water, one of the general marine structure. Finally, entrance section was suggested to enhance the energy conversion efficiency based on the results of simulation.
