The amount of municipal water has been increased rapidly up to now and it is necessary to treat and dispose the wastewater effectively. The recent trend of the effluent disposal system, after treatment, show a nearshore discharge which has an outfall with length somewhere between the shoreline discharge and an extended deepwater outfall. There is no universal solution to municipal water treatment and disposal and each case must be examined on its merits and on economic, technical and environmental bases. In this study we focused mostly on the scientific and engineering aspects of ocean disposal through the outfall. For this purpose, we made an investigation to the near-field characteristics of discharged water and made some comparison with the existing experimental results. We also applied it to the Pusan Jungang Effluent Outfall System, which is planned to build in the Gamchun harbour and will be completed in 2011. The model output showed the trajectoral variation of dilution and mixing behavior for three cases of outfall system. Dilution differences have been simulated and found the highest dilution condition under the different displacement of outfall system. On the basis of these outputs it will be proposed the optimum outfall system type and location.
Mixing zone characteristics of the wastewater effluents discharged from an ocean outfall have been investigated using an outfall mixing zone analysis method. This analysis was applied to Sokcho ocean outfall case and was used to simulate the concentration distribution of wastewater effluents. Hourly concentration distributions of outfall effluent discharges were averaged for the period of 15 days. The results show that near-field dilution was relatively high with the dilution of 130 for the winter season.

In order to investigate the characteristics of water quality and heavy metals in Shihwa Lake, concentration comparisons according to land use types and mass discharge through streams were carried out. Based on classification for streams according to land use types, the concentration of DO, SS, POC, $NO_3$ and Chl-a showed higher concentrations in agricultural areas than in industrial and urban areas. However, COD, DIN, DIP, TN, TP, DOC, TOC and heavy metal concentrations showed relatively high values in industrial areas. The concentrations of water qualities and heavy metals were relatively high in March to May and the concentration decreased in summer seasons (July-August). The averages of stream discharges of water qualities were 1,172 kg/d for SS, 151 kg/d for TN, 11.1 kg/d for TP and 389 kg/d for TOC, respectively. The agricultural area, Jangjunbo(S8), accounted for 47.5%(TP)~75.1%(SS) in the total stream discharges. Cu, Zn and Cd in stream waters were found to be more than 92% of the total discharges in industrial area, showing descending order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Pb>Co>Cd.

The purpose of salinity intrusion due to numerical simulation is analaysis for saline intrusion to the upstream channel in Nakdong River Estuary Barrage(NREB) to get enough fresh water. Conditions that occur salinity intrusion affect by tidal distribution at seas, so salinity concentration changes according to tidal phenomenon. Making this connection cleary can help preventing salinity intrusion. In this study, estimating salinity intrusion to the upstream channel in NREB using EOMSED model, we reexamine NREB's existence. Comparison is also made with observing data. In result, when inflow discharges at $75m^3/s$ is more similar with respect to observing data than $130m^3/s$ at ECOMSED model. Thus, estimations are more precise at little discharges than lots of discharges.

The Coastal sediment is highly contaminated due to ship transportation, industries discharges and urban sources. Various contaminants release into seawater and settle in marine sediment and it significantly affect marine eco system. In the present study evaluated the optimization of slow release biostimulant ball (BSB) in coastal sediment in busan. The effective variables like BSB size, distance and month variables on VS reduction was determined by using Response surface methodology(RSM). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) and coefficient determination (R2) of VS was 0.9369 and maximum reduction of VS was obtained in 3cm ball size and 5.5cm distance and 4 month interval time. This result revealed that the BSB in effective VS reduction in coastal sediment.
In this paper, in order to set up the management system of water quality environment in Gwangyang Bay, the cluster analysis of water quality environment, the estimation of inflowing pollutant loads and residence time of pollutants in this bay was carried out. The Gwangyang Bay was divided into eight sea areas by cluster analysis and spatio-temporal change of water quality. The river discharges in the Bay were calculated about $11,681{\times}103m^3/day$ from the numerical simulation by Tank model. In addition, inflowing pollutant loads of COD, SS, TN, TP, DIN and DIP in Gwangyang Bay were estimated at 398 ton-COD/day, 2,846 ton-SS/day, 195 ton-TN/day, 5 ton-TP/day, 126 ton-DIN/day and 3 ton-DIP/day, respectively. Moreover, residence times of COD, TN and TP in the Bay was estimated at 6 days-COD, 20 days-TN and 195 days-TP, respectively in the dry season, and 3 days-COD, 6 days-TN and 21 days- TP, respectively, in the flood season. The central part of Gwangyang Bay (Region IV) has the longest residence time of overall pollutants.
Overtopping Wave Energy Convertor (OWEC) is an offshore wave energy convertor, which comprises the circular ramp and reservoir. It collects the overtopped waves and converting water pressure head into electric power through the hydro-turbines installed in the vertical duct, which is fixed in the sea bed. The performance of OWEC can be represented by the operating water heads of the device, which depends on the amount of the wave water overtopping into the reservoir. In the present paper, the reservoir with the duct connecting to the sea water are studied in the 3D numerical wave tank, which has been developed based on the computational fluid dynamics software Fluent 6.3. Both the overtopping motion and the discharges of the reservoir are investigated together, and several shape parameters and incident wave conditions are varied to demonstrate their effects on the performance of OWEC.

The change patterns of the water quanity, water quality(WQ, exclusively COD in this study) and monthly / annual pollutant loads(PL) estimated using the daily effluent discharges and WQ measurement data are analyzed in the Nakdong river estuarine seadike. The contribution factor defined by the ratio of the water quantity range and WQ range shows that the PL pattern in this estuary is classified as the strongly flow(water quantity)-dominated situation. The estimated PL(EPL)s with respect to the increasing sampling periods, e.g., 2-days, 5-days, 7-days, and so on, show that the mean values of the EPLs remain nearly same, whereas the standard deviations of the EPLs have an obvious increasing trend. The PL values using the monthly-averaged water quantity and WQ measurement data could have approximately 100% estimation error in annual mean and $300\sim400%$ estimation errors in summer season because its confidence level is relatively low. It is recommended that the PL should be estimated using at least $10\sim20$ day interval data sets and also the water quantity(river discharges) and WQ should be measured at the intervals of at least 1 day interval and 5 to 7 days, respectively in summer.
In this study, laboratory study of the behavior of wastewater discharged from the Boston ocean outfall was compared with the predictions of mathematical models. The dta sets cover broad ranges of discharge conditions and oceanic conditions, and are associated with a typical type of outfall discharges with multiport diffusers. The laboratory data sets were obtained in density stratified towing tanks. These data sets were used to evaluate four commonly used models: UM, UDKHDEN, RSB and CORMI$\times$2 for minimum dilution, the height to the top of the wastefield, and wastefield thickness. For minimum diluation and height to the top of the wastefield, UM and RSB predictions agree well with laboratory data. UDKHDEN overestimated the minimum dilution and height to the top of the wastefield while CORMI$\times$2 underestimated these values. All of the model predictions for the wastefield thickness were widely scattered. about the measured values. The hydraulic model study reproduced the major features observed in the laboratory. It also afforded considerable insight into the mechanics of mixing of multiport risers which could not have been obtained either from the laboratory test or the mathematical models.

Accurate analysis of water budget and seawater exchange characteristics is essential for the improvement and management of the degraded water quality in Masan Bay. In this study, water budget is simulated for the four divided coastal zones on the monthly base, and watershed runoff discharges which are important as input parameters are estimated using the runoff coefficient(=0.7). The main results are as follows : The runoff-contribution rate due to water supply discharge is increased from 10% in 1978 to the equivalent amount at present. The reduction quantity due to the wastewater interception is about 25% of total inflow discharges, and the net effects of both precipitation and evaporation is about 10%. As the hydraulic detention time in Masan Bay is estimated about 3 months, water exchange rate is to be very low. From the analysis of the salinity variation on account of water mixing, it appears no temporal correlation between monthly average precipitation and salinity, whereas only regional correlation is apparent.
