  • Paper industry in Korea produces 14 million tons of paper and 1.3 million tons of sludge per year. Most of them has been treated by incineration, landfilling or ocean dumping. The sludge recycling to minimize the impact on the environment, so its importance is highlighted. In this study, in order to develop a new way of recycling the sludge, it was calcined and the recycled ash was tried to use as papermaking filler. Concerning the yield of calcium carbonate and the brightness and the rheology of the recycled calcination sludge, the optimum calcination conditions were found to be $600^{\circ}C$ and 12 hours. The sludge ash itself was not suitable for papermaking due to its color and low brightness. Thus the ash from the sludge was first mixed with a commercial filler and then utilized for papermaking. The effect of the increased hardness after high temperature treatment on wire abrasion was confirmed.

  • Recent ocean warming near the Korean peninsula and our lack of knowledge of an important vertebrate group, the sea snakes, encouraged us to clarify this part of Korea's regional fauna. We re-examined photographs that had been used to report the slender-necked sea snake (Hydrophis melanocephalus) in 1995. We discovered it was misidentified. To determine the correct identity of the sea snake, we studied 13 original photographs taken at the collecting site in Sooyoung Bay, Busan-si, in 1995 and determined the snake to be Laticauda semifasciata based on enlarged ventral scales, definitive for Laticaudinae sea snakes, and internasal scales, pale blue body color, divided rostral scale, and evident "V"-shaped stripes on the body trunk, definitive for L. semifasciata. Therefore, the snake caught 30 years ago in Korean waters should be considered the first record of a Laticaudinae sea snake in Korean waters. L. semifasciata is listed as near threatened setting the stage for urgently needed studies of sea snakes in Korea and supporting those currently underway.

  • KARI is currently developing a geostationary ocean color imager (GOCI) for COMS. We report the progress in integrated optical modeling and analysis for stray light suppression and the end-to-end instrument performance verification including in-orbit calibration. The Sun is modeled as the emitting light source and the selected area around Korean peninsular as the observation target that scatters the sun light towards GOCI in orbit. The optical ray tracing employing active geometric scaling was then used for precise characterization of the spatial and radiometric performance at the instrument focal plane. The analysis results show positive reduction in the simulated stray light level with the design improvement including baffles. It also indicates that the ray traced in-orbit radiometric performances are effective tools for the independent assessment of more traditional linear and quadratic equation based estimation of water leaving radiance. The concept of integrated GOCI optical model and the computational method are presented.

  • Hydrographic data including particulate organic carbon (POC) from the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico (NEGOM) study were used along with remotely sensed data obtained from NASA's Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) to develop POC algorithms to estimate POC concentration based on empirical and model-based principal component analysis (PCA) methods. In Case I and II waters empirical maximized simple ratio (MSR) and model-based PCA algorithms using full wavebands (blue, green and red wavelengths) provide more robust estimates of POC. The predicted POC concentrations matched well the spatial and seasonal distributions of POC measured in situ in the Gulf of Mexico. The ease in calculating the MSR algorithm compared to PCA analysis makes MSR the preferred algorithm for routine use. In order to determine the inter-annual variations of POC, MSR algorithms applied to calculate 100 monthly mean values of POC concentrations (September 1997-December 2005). The spatial and temporal variations of POC and sea surface temperature (SST) were analyzed with the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) method. POC estimates showed inter-annual variation in three different locations and may be affected by El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o/Southern$ Oscillation (ENSO) events.

  • Satellite sea ice data from 1978 to the present reveal that the perennial ice (or ice that survives the summer) has been rapidly declining at almost 10% per decade. Warming due to increases in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is now also being reflected in winter with drastic reductions in the maximum extent observed in 2005 and 2006. The retreat of the perennial ice also exposes more open water and has revealed an asymmetric distribution of chlorophyll a pigment concentration in the Arctic basin. Phytoplankton blooms are most dominant at high latitudes, partly on account of sea ice, but in the Arctic basin, it appears that pigment concentrations in the Eastern (Laptev Sea) Region are on the average three times higher than those in the Western (Beaufort Sea) Region. Such asymmetry suggests that despite favorable conditions provided by the melt of sea ice, there are other factors that affects the productivity of the region. The asymmetry is likely associated with much wider shelf areas in the East than in the West, with sea ice processes that inhibits the availability of nutrients near the surface in deep water regions, and river run-off that affects nutrient availability. The primary productivity in the pan-Arctic region have been estimated using the pigment concentrations and PAR derived from SeaWiFS data and the results show large seasonal as well as interannual variability during the 1998 to 2005 period. The data points towards increasing productivity for later years but with only 9 years of data it is too early to tell the overall effect of the sea ice retreat.

  • Environmental qualities of coastal water and bottom sediment were assessed at Jordan's northernmost tip of Gulf of Aqaba to evaluate possible impacts of the bordering fish pen cages in Eilat. Results showed significant differences between surface and bottom water in the chemical and physical variables in the different months of the year (2004-2005). Chlorophyll a was also significantly higher in bottom water when compared to that of the offshore water. Nitrate and ammonia were significantly higher in bottom water than the surface water at each individual station. The upper 2 cm of sediment sample recorded higher values of total phosphorus and organic matter. Seasonality affected the content of total phosphorus, organic matter, redox potential and color especially at the sediment layer below 3 cm of the sediment core. The present investigation showed slight modification of water and sediment qualities but no clear sign of eutrophication was observed. However, to maintain sustainability of healthy environmental conditions at the northern tip of Gulf of Aqaba potentials of any possible environmental risks arising from the fish farms or any other coastal investment should be carefully considered.

  • To establish a monthly data collection planning for the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager (OSMI), we have examined the global patterns of three impacting factors: pigment concentration, cloud cover, and sun glint. Other than satellite mission constraints (e.g., duty cycle), these three factors are considered critical for the OSMI data collection. The Nimbus-7 Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) monthly mean products and the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) monthly mean products (C2) were used for the analysis of pigment concentration and cloud cover distributions, respectively. And the monthly simulated patterns of sun glint were produced by performing the OSMI orbit prediction and the calculation of sun glint radiances at the top-of-atmosphere (TOA). Using monthly statistics (mean and/or standard deviation) of each factor in the above for a given 10$^{\circ}$ latitude by 10$^{\circ}$ longitude grid, we generated the priority map for each month. The priority maps of three factors for each month were subsequently superimposed to visualize the impact of three factors in all. The initial results illustrated that a large part of oceans in the summer hemisphere was classified into the low priority regions because of seasonal changes of clouds and sun illumination. Sensitivity tests were performed to see how cloud cover and sun glint affect the priority determined by pigment concentration distributions, and consequently to minimize their seasonal effects upon the data collection planning.

  • The neritid species Clithon retropictus inhabits rivers and estuaries along the southern coast of the Korean mainland but has not been previously reported from Jeju Island. In 2007 and 2011 specimens of this species were obtained from two separate localities on the south coast of the island. Comparisons were made with von Martens' original description, specimens from the Korean mainland, and illustrations and descriptions in the literature. Although there were some differences in color and markings, and slight differences in morphology, the specimens from Jeju Island compare well with those from the mainland and in the literature. The shells of this species become more ovate and more eroded with age. In one locality, a small river, specimens of the pleurocerid Semisulcospira libertina (Gould, 1859), were found adjacent to, and coexisting with, a population of C. retropictus, an association that often occurs. The occurrence of Clithon retropictus represents a range extension to Jeju Island.
