A Finger Dermatoglyphic Study of Maori

  • Fingerprints of 104 New Zealand Maori males and 98 females have been analyzed. Whorls are more abundant in females (55.0%) than in males(47.3%). The index of pattern intensity reveals a higher va1ue in females(15.39) than in males (14.52). The bimanual differences both in males and females are not statistically significant for the occurrence of pattern on the digits of the right and left hands. The difference between the sexes in occurrence of patterns is not statistically significant. Incidences of actual symmetry on the homologous digits represented a mean of 78.8% in all subjects. The mean total ridge counts showed 161.7 in females and 159.6 in males, respectively. Thus, the Maori show greater affinities with the Mongoloids in quantitative dermatoglyphics.

Trend Analysis of Wildland Fires and Their Impacts on Atmospheric Environment over East Asia

  • Active fire products from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite observation during the 16 years from 2000-2015 were analyzed to estimate spatial and temporal variations of wildland fires over East Asia (region of interest: $20^{\circ}N-55^{\circ}N$, $100^{\circ}E-150^{\circ}E$). GLOBCOVER 2009 land cover data were also used to investigate the trend in wildfire occurrence with respect to each land cover type. Statistical analysis showed that the highest number of wildland fires occurred in the evergreen and vegetation covered areas, and strong seasonal variations were found in these areas. Total numbers of fires were 283,683 and 202,543, respectively. In particular, the wildland fires in croplands occurred mainly during summer season and distinguishable increasing trends were found. The correlations between number of wildland fires and air pollutants, such as black carbon, organic matter, and carbon monoxide, were also calculated in order to investigate the intensity of the air pollution caused by the wildland fires. Positive correlation between total column carbon monoxide contents and the occurrence of wildland fire was found. In addition, this correlation was higher than the correlation between fire occurrence and black carbon or organic matter. These results indicate that a significant amount of carbon monoxide originated from the wildland fires and influenced the regional atmospheric environment in East Asia.

A Stochastic Model for Precipitation Occurrence Process of Hourly Precipitation Series (시간강수계열의 강수발생과정에 대한 추계학적 모형)

  • This study is an effort to develop a stochastic model of precipitation series that preserves the pattern of occurrence of precipitation events throughout the year as well as several characteristics of the duration, amount, and intensity of precipitation events. In this study an event cluster model is used to describe the occurrence of precipitation events. A logarithmic negative mixture distribution is used to describe event duration and separation. The number of events within each cluster is also described by the Poisson cluster process. The duration of each event within a cluster and the separation of events within a single cluster are described by a logarithmic negative mixture distribution. The stochastic model for hourly precipitation occurrence process is fitted to historical precipitation data by estimating the model parameters. To allow for seasonal variations in the precipitation process, the model parameters are estimated separately for each month. an analysis of thirty-four years of historical and simulated hourly precipitation data for Seoul indicates that the stochastic model preserves many features of historical precipitation. The seasonal variations in number of precipitation events in each month for the historical and simulated data are also approximately identical. The marginal distributions for event characteristics for the historical and simulated data were similar. The conditional distributions for event characteristics for the historical and simulated data showed in general good agreement with each other.

Relationship between the Occurrence of Thromboembolism and INR Measurement Interval in Low Intensity Anticoagulation after Aortic Mechanical Valve Replacement

  • Background: We investigated changes in the International Normalized Ratio (INR) and its measurement interval in patients with thromboembolic events who were treated by low intensity anticoagulation therapy after isolated mechanical aortic valve replacement. Materials and Methods: Seventy-seven patients who underwent surgery from June 1990 to September 2006 were enrolled in the study and observed until August 2008. The patients were followed up at 4~8 week intervals and their warfarin (Coumadin)$^{(R)}$ dosage was adjusted aiming for a target range of INR 1.5~2.5. The rate of thromboembolic events was obtained. Changes in the mean INR and INR measurement interval were comparatively analyzed between the normal group (event free group, N=52) who had no anticoagulation-related complications and the thromboembolic group (N=10). Hospital records were reviewed retrospectively. Results: The observation period was 666.75 patient-years. Thromboembolic events occurred in 10 patients. The linearized occurrence rate of thromboembolism was 1.50%/patient-years. Actuarial thromboembolism-free rates were $97.10{\pm}2.02%$ at 5 years, $84.30{\pm}5.22%$ at 10 years, and $67.44{\pm}12.14%$ at 15 years. The percentages of INR within the target range and mean INR were not statistically significantly different for the normal and thromboembolic groups. However, the mean INR during the segmented period just before the events showed a significantly lower level in the thromboembolic group (during a 4 month period: normal group, $1.86{\pm}0.14$ vs. thromboembolic group, $1.50{\pm}0.28$, p<0.001). The mean intervals of INR measurement during the whole observation period showed no significant differences between groups, but in the segmented period just before the events, the interval was significantly longer in thromboembolic group (during a 6 month period: normal group, $49.04{\pm}9.47$ days vs. thromboembolic group, $65.89{\pm}44.88$ days, p<0.01). Conclusion: To prevent the occurrence of thromboembolic events in patients who receive isolated aortic valve replacement and low intensity anticoagulation therapy, we suggest that it would be safe to maintain an INR level above 1.8 and to measure the INR at least every 7~8 weeks.

  • Super precision working technique and machine tool have been continually developed thanks to advanced electronic field. To obtain good result. it is necessary to investigate surface in grinding with $mu extrm{m}$ level. There were quite many researches to satisfy these demands by using non-contact methods through the computer vision. In this study, the texture of working surface was analyzed. co-occurrence matrices was obtained from the surface roughness. Texture parameter was obtained using position operator composed of $ heta$, d according to variation of angle direction and distance. As a result, it was found that surface texture was more affected by direction($\theta$) than distance(d).

  • In this paper, a practical design criteria for judgement of crack occurrence in weldments is presented as a function of typical welding parameters, such as diffusible hydrogen, restraint intensity, and preheating temperature. The elastic analyses using the finite element techniques are employed in order to quantify the restraint intensities, numerically. Systematic experiments are also conducted in order to investigate the propensity of crack to typical welding parameters. The results of numerical estimation using the proposed method for the experimental specimens show the usefulness as a practical tool in welding induced crack problems with extensive uncertainties.   • A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of double subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was performed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.

  • Serious damages occurred in Yeongdong area of Gangwondo by typoon Rusa in August, 2002. Therefore, this study intends to investigate and analyse the characteristics of landslide having occurred in Gangneung area. 11 sites including many features of landslide were selected and scales, soil properties and a state of vegatation of slopes were investigated. It can be concluded that rainfall intensity, the velocity of the wind, geomorphology, vegatation and forest fire etc. are considered as main factors affecting occurrence of landslides in this area.

  • The black-tailed gull chicks, Larus crassirostris, recognize various adult voice signal base on the simple patterns. We investigated behavior change in black-tailed gull chicks through physical manipulation of mew call. They were playback in four situations differing in physical character: 1) frequency manipulation only, 2) duration manipulation only, 3) call intensity(dB) manipulation only, and 4) call interval manipulation only. We observed occurrence of different response of the chicks, which were categorized into two behaviors(hidden and return behavior). The manipulated frequency, duration, and intensity were directly correlated. The chicks exposed to only manipulated call interval(0.5, 1sec) made significantly more hidden and return behavior. Adult black-tailed gull only increased flight time on manipulated call interval. The results suggest that black-tailed gulls use short call interval for alarm signal. The analysis of alarm signal provides an important on basic study of bird strike.
