  • An academic article is normally cited within a few years of publication, after which interest falls off as the research field moves on. However, an article is sometimes ignored for many years only to attract interest after a long period of dormancy. Such articles are called "Sleeping Beauties." A general characterization of this pattern has recently been defined and is used in this study to identify five Sleeping Beauties that were published by researchers at the University of Waterloo in the 1970s and 1980s. While a handful of studies have examined the occurrence of such Sleeping Beauties in specific fields of research or in a particular journal, none has yet identified these unusual articles in the context of the lasting impact of a university's research. This study is therefore a novel application of the latest technique for identifying Sleeping Beauties. The possibilities for using this unusual citation pattern in raising the profile of a university's research are discussed.

  • Chondrodite form the Wondong mine, Korea, which is the first occurrence from the southern Korea, has been studied for its mineralogical characterization. It occurs in close association with penninite, phlogopite, diopside and garnet within the magnetite ore bodies, which are debeloped along the contact of the Hwajeol Formation and rhyolite. Two kinds of chondrodites are recognized by their different optical properties; the high birefringent untwinned one and the low birefringent twinned one. The former has slightly higher Mn content than the latter. Twinning in chondrodite has been formed in close relation to substitution Mg (Fe, Mn) in the humite solid solution, as evidenced by the chemical variation across the twin lamallae.

  • The fiber-rich fractions including enzyme treated insoluble dietary fiber, alcohol insoluble solid, and water insoluble solid were prepared from the peel of soft ripe persimmon, and to evaluate and compare the yields, proximate compositions, monosaccharide profiles, and functional properties. The results showed that uronic acid was the main sugar followed by glucose, which indicated that all insoluble fibers were mainly composed of pectic substances and cellulose. The presence of xylose and fucose indicated the occurrence of hemicellulose. All fiber-rich fractions were exhibited high yield and functional properties. Thus, the peel of ripe persimmon could be used as fiber supplements.

  • To determine the occurrence of vancomycin-resistant Enterococci in a raw milk sample, raw milk samples were examined for a period of 6 months. Enterococci were isolated directly from Enterococcal selective agar plates supplemented with 2 mg of vancomycin per liter, Nineteen strains were selected and identified by applying the Vitek system. To determine resistance patterns, 19 isolates were tested with vancomycin and teicoplanin. Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci were genotyped by using a PCR analysis and 5 out of 19 isolates were of the VanC type.

  • In 2010, disease symptoms, including necrotic lesions on stems and leaves with circular yellow-brown or irregular brown color patches, were observed on cool-season turfgrass at golf courses (OHCC) and the Daegu University research farm in Gyeongbuk, Korea. We isolated the causal agent and identified it as Waitea circinata var. zeae by morphological characterization and molecular analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of brown patch caused by W. circinata var. zeae on cool-season turfgrass in Korea.

  • White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) causes the most serious epizootic in cultured penaeid shrimp. The epizootic started in 1992, and spread through east and south east Asia and into other shrimp growing countries of the region. WSSV has also been reported from Penaeus chinensis cultured in Korean peninsula (Park et al., 1998; Kim et al., 1999). However, this paper deals with the WSSV infection in cultured and wild P. chinensis, purification and characterization of the pathogen, and the occurrence of other concomitant infection. (omitted)

  • Lectins or carbohydrate-binding proteins are proteins of non-immune origin, which is able to agglutinate cells, and precipitate polysaccharides and glycoconjugates (Goldstein et al., 1980). Lectins with diverse physiological roles are widely distributed to the various plant, microorganisms, invertebrates and vertebrates. The ubiquitous occurrence of lectins in nature and their ability to recognize complementary sugars provided a stimulus for the continuous research for their biochemical properties and physiological functions (Raz and Lotan, 1987). • A strain of gas-producing and volume-expanding yeast was isolated from Gochujang made in Sunchang by the traditional ways and was identified to be a Saccharomyces sp. This yeast was detected only in malt among the several ingrediants of Gochujang which means that the volume-expanding yeast comes into Gochujang at the time of making products through malt one of the major ingredients. However boiling of the malt-saccharified rice could not prevent the occurrence of the volume-expanding yeast in Gochuj-ang. This yeast was contained in the range of 5.67∼7.75 log10CFU/g in products made and aged between 1 monty and 3 year in Sunchang area.

  • Impingement cooling utilizing synthetic jets is emerging as a popular cooling technique because of its high local cooling efficiency. The interaction between the vortex structure of the synthetic jet and the surface is crucial in understanding the mechanism of this technique. In this study, the impinging vortex structure and its advection are investigated by experiments with jet-to-surface spacing $2{\leq}H/D{\leq}7$, and synthetic jet Reynolds number $5120{\leq}Re{\leq}9050$. Using phase-locked particle image velocimetry, ensemble averaged (phase averaged) flow fields are obtained, and vortex identification and quantification techniques are applied. The shape, trajectory, and intensity change of the vortex are assessed. A sharp decline in the vortex intensity and the occurrence of a counter-rotating vortex at the impingement point are observed.
