Traditional occupant analysis has been performed with a pre-determined crash puse which is produced from a test and the involved components are designed based on the analysis resuls. The method has limitations in that the design does not have much freedom. Howrver, if a good crash pulse is proposed, the body structure can be modified to generate the crash pulse. Therefore, it is assumed that the crash pulse can be changed to imptove the occupant crash performance. A preferable crash pulse is determined to minimize the occupant injuty. A constraint is established to keep the phenomena of physics valid. The response surface method(RSM) is adopted for the optimization process. An RSM in a commercial code is utilzed by interfacing with an in-house occupant analysis program called SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Enviroment). Design of involved components called is carried out through optimization with the RSM. The advantages of the RSM are investigated as opposed to other methods, and the tesults are compared. Also, the design under the new crach pulse is compared with that trom the pre-detetmined pulse.
During certification of freefall lifeboats, it is necessary to estimate the injury potential of the impact loads exerted on the occupants during water entry. This paper focused on the numerical simulation to predict the acceleration response during the impact of freefall lifeboats on the water using FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code. FSI problems could be conveniently simulated by the overlapping capability using Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian(ALE) formulation and Euler-Lagrange coupling algorithm of LS-DYNA code. Through this study, it could be found that simulation results were in relatively good agreement with experimental ones in the acceleration peak values, and that the loading conditions were very sensitive to the acceleration responses by the experimental and simulation results.
Various buildings constructed by environmentally friendly resources are being built in KOREA. Especially as the wood has distinctive ecological merits in comparison with reinforced concrete and brick, the buildings made by the wood are acknowledged with its superiority of ecological value. Enough field studies for their thermal environment, however, haven't been done. In this study, to investigate indoor environmental condition and occupants' response to it of Log Cabin in Gyeongsangnam-do Hamyang Country Jirisan Natural Recreation Forest, examination of indoor thermal environment and field subjective evaluation have been done in that fundamental information of thermal environment characteristics can be suggested. The results are following; 1) Thermal environment of the Log Cabins; Indoor and outdoor mean dry bulb temperature were $21.9^{\circ}C$ and $-3.1^{\circ}C$, and Indoor and outdoor average relative humidity were 25.8% and 52.1%. These results are below ASHRAE; dry bulb temp. $22.0^{\circ}C$, humidity 30%, and above domestic standards; dry bulb temp. $18{\sim}20.0^{\circ}C$, humidity $40{\sim}60%$. 2) Result of subjective evaluation; Thermal sensation and its comfort were evaluated as 'slightly uncomfortable' because of 'slightly warm'. And humid sensation and its comfort were evaluated as 'slightly uncomfortable' because of 'slightly warm'. 3) Result of vertical temperature and humidity; Vertical temperature difference from head to ankle was $0.54^{\circ}C$ which means most occupants may feel comfortable.
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the efficient design of traffic light poles involved in vehicle frontal collisions by developing a computer-based, finite-element model capable of capturing the impact characteristics. This is achieved by using the available non-linear dynamic analysis software "LS-DYNA3D", which can accurately predict the dynamic response of both the vehicle and the traffic light pole. The fiber reinforced polymer(FRP) as a new pole's material is proposed in this paper to increase energy absorption capabilities in the case of a traffic pole involved in a vehicle head-on collision. Numerical analyses are conducted to evaluate the effects of key parameters on the response of the pole embedded in soil when impacted by vehicles, including: soil type(clay and sand) and pole material type(FRP and steel). It is demonstrated from the numerical analysis that the FRP pole-soil system has favorable advantages over steel poles, where the FRP pole absorbed vehicle impact energy in a smoother behavior, which leads to smoother acceleration pulse and less deformation of the vehicle than those encountered with steel poles. Also, it was observed that clayey soil brings a slightly more resistance than sandy soil which helps reducing pole movement at ground level. Finally, FRP pole system provides more energy absorbing leading to protection during minor impacts and under service loading, and remain flexible enough to avoid influencing vehicle occupants, thus reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from the crash.
Excessive wind-induced motion in tall buildings can cause discomfort, affect health, and disrupt the daily activities of the occupants of a building. Dynamic vibration absorbers such as the tuned mass dampers (TMDs) can be used to reduce the wind-induced motion below a specified tolerable serviceability limit state (SLS) criterion. This study investigates whether the same probability of not exceeding specified wind-induced motion levels can be achieved by torsionally sensitive structures without/with linear/nonlinear TMDs subjected to partially correlated wind forces, if they are designed to just meet the same SLS criterion. For the analyses, different structures and the uncertainty in the response, wind load and perception of motion is considered. Numerical results indicate that for structures that are designed or retrofitted without or with optimum linear TMDs and satisfying the same SLS criterion, their probability of exceeding the considered criterion is very consistent, if the inherent correlation between the wind forces is considered in design. However, this consistency deteriorates if nonlinear TMDs are employed. Furthermore, if the correlation is ignored in the design, in many cases a slightly unconservative design, as compared to the designed by considering correlation, is achieved.

Due to the frequency and magnitude of some loads produced by gusts of turbulent wind, building floors can develop lateral displacements and significant accelerations which can produce strong inertial forces on structural, non-structural elements and occupants. A device that can help to reduce the floor accelerations is the well-known Tuned Mass Damper (TMD); however, nowadays there is no enough information about its capacity in order to dissipate energy of turbulent wind loads. For this reason, in this paper different buildings with and without TMD are modeled and dynamically analyzed under simulated wind loads in order to study the reduction of peak floor accelerations. The results indicate that peak floor accelerations can be reduced up to 40% when TMD are incorporated in the buildings, which demonstrated that the Tuned Mass Damper is an efficient device to reduce the wind effects on tall buildings.
Recently, Energy savings in buildings has received much attention in response to the increased needs for global warming and better comforts of the occupants in apartment housing. This study proposes the method which uses the sun control window film to reduce the cooling load and heating load improving the thermal performance of the building and it improves an energy efficiency. The film which used in actual measurement has a low shading coefficient and a solar energy transmission. so we measured the surface temperature of the triple Low-e glazing system used and inside temperature according to the change of outside temperature and solar energy to study thermal performance evaluation. As a result, it was helpful to use window film insulation to reduce inside temperature in summer and to keep room warm in winter.
Serviceability of buildings is affect by excessive acceleration experienced at the top floors in wind storms that may cause discomfort to the occupants. Tuned liquid damper(TLD) and multiple tuned liquid damper(MTLD) are passive control devices that consists of rigid tank filled with liquid to suppress the vibration of structures. This TLD and MTLD are attributable to several potential advantages - low costs; easy to install in existing structures; effective even for small-amplitude vibrations. In this paper, the behavior of TLD and MTLD are investigated analytically and wind tunnel test of high-frequency force balance.
1. The objective of this paper is to investigate the indoor environment from the viewpoint of interaction between physical environment and the human responses. 2. A continuous measurement has been carried out for 1 year and distribution of variables have been measured for 1 day. 3. The attitude of workers was investigated by a questionnaire. 4. As the result, average luminance represented more than 800-1800 lx in the office, in contrast with less than 1000 lx in the encourage luminance of an office. 5. There was a significant difference of the occupants' response to the light environment between the neighboring environments. 6. Measured thermal conditions are on the edge of the ASHRAE comfort envelope in summer, and in the neighborhood of the lower dry limit of the envelope in spring.
Nowadays the number of people suffering from Sick House Syndrome have been increasing, especially after they move into a new apartment. The symptom varies with people and it develops gradually. It is known that the symptom is caused by chemicals. In spite of many unknown factors related to the symptom, lifestyle and behavioral factors of occupants were possibly. The purpose of this study was to find out the residents' self-reported symptoms of Sick Building Syndrome in new apartment houses. The response could be self-consciousness symptom, health damage and the improvement plan.
