In a previous study, an investigation of occupant behaviors and injuries (to the head and chest) was performed during vehicle impact loading cases in order to ensure the safety of wheelchair passengers on a bus. The computational results showed overall safety tolerances of wheelchair occupants under different accident configurations. The bus crashworthiness is described as the capability of a bus to protect occupants during rollover loadings. The residual space containing occupants should be undamaged without any intrusions. However it is necessary to evaluate the residual space according to the bus occupant kinematic analysis under the rollover crash simulation. This study focuses on the evaluation of occupant behaviors during rollover loading cases in order to ensure the safety of bus passengers sitting in general seats and wheelchairs and evaluates the residual space of the bus by analyzing the bus occupant kinematics.
Vehicle occupant postures are anticipated to vary more widely during automated driving and to become more significant in terms of the autonomous vehicle safety. Experimental and computational approaches are needed to investigate and evaluate occupant behaviors during automated driving in general. However the validity and effect of such occupant postures are unknown, thus it is necessary to examine occupant behaviors and injury countermeasures for various occupant postures. This study was focused on the development and evaluation of restraint system model for occupant behavior examinations in the first step according to autonomous vehicle occupant safety. The finite element models of dummy and restraint system were set up and simulation results showed overall model performance and safety tolerances of different reclined occupant postures during frontal impact loading.
The severe frontal crash tests are NCAP with belted occupant at 35mph and FMVSS 208 with unbelted occupant at 25mph, This paper describes the design process of occupant protection systems, airbag and seat belt, under the two tests. In this study, NCAP simulations are performed by Monte Carlo search method and cluster analysis. The Monte Carlo search method is a global optimization technique and requires execution of a series of deterministic analyses, The procedure is as follows. 1) Define the region of interest 2) Perform Monte Carlo simulation with uniform distribution 3) Transform output to obtain points grouped around the local minima 4) Perform cluster analysis to obtain groups that are close to each other 5) Define the several feasible design ranges. The several feasible designs are acquired and checked under FMVSS 208 simulation with unbelted occupant at 25mph.
Visual effects are important cues for providing occupants with virtual reality in a vehicle simulator which imitates real driving. The viewpoint of an occupant is sensitively dependent upon the occupant's posture, therefore, the total human body motion must be considered in a graphic simulator. A real-time simulation is required for the dynamic analysis of complex human body motion. This study attempts to apply a neural network to the motion analysis in various driving situations. A full car of medium-sized vehicles was selected and modeled, and then analyzed using ADAMS in such driving conditions as bump-pass and lane-change for acquiring the accelerations of chassis of the vehicle model. A hybrid III 50%ile adult male dummy model was selected and modeled in an ellipsoid model. Multibody system analysis software, MADYMO, was used in the motion analysis of an occupant model in the seated position under the acceleration field of the vehicle model. Acceleration data of the head were collected as inputs to the viewpoint movement. Based on these data, a back-propagation neural network was composed to perform the real-time analysis of occupant motions under specified driving conditions and validated output of the composed neural network with MADYMO result in arbitrary driving scenario.
Occupant behaviors and body contact with vehicle interior parts are main injury mechanism in far-side collisions. In vehicle side impact accident where the crash accident occurs on the opposite side of the vehicle from the a particular occupant, it is exposed in terms of relatively larger lateral motion to interact with the opposite side of the vehicle structure. The challenge of minimizing motions of upper body and injury risk according to a direct contact is a primary occupant protection research. This study has performed a data analysis of real-world accident database extracted from the 2016~2020 CISS database and a parametric investigation of impact angles and occupant kinematics in far-side lateral and oblique impact simulations. A detailed data analysis was conducted to reveal the relationship among the accident and injury data. Database analysis and computational far-side impact results proposed the fundamental vehicle design for safety improvement in far-side collisions.
Safety of passengers in the Korean High Speed Train, KHST, was evaluated under the different accident scenarios. Preliminary occupant analysis has been performed based on the TGV-K train seat characteristics. The influence of the vehicle deceleration and passenger type, seating positions, effectiveness of compartmentalization have been evaluated in terms of occupant injury criteria. This study is the final result of the occupant analysis of KHST project at 1st stage 3rd year.
Real automobiles have been utilized to study the occupant behaviors and the response of the structures in the crash environment. Since various parameters are involved in the automobile crashworthiness, a number of experiments must be conducted. The experiments have been contributed to increasing the cost due to the fact that the test is quite expensive. Therefore, computer simulation is adopted to reduce the number of experiments. A few computer programs have been developed specifically to solve the occupant responses in the crash environment. In this research, a software is used to study the occupant dynamic analysis. A modeling of occupant analysis is established for a passenger car and the results are verified through comparisons with real experiments. In the modeling, data are tuned very carefully so that simulated results such as HIC(Head Injury Criterion) and acceleration of each body may approximate to the experimental results. The compared experiment is a barrier test which is carried out by frontal impact. A feedback to the design process is suggested from the result of this research.
The safety analysis becomes very essential in the crash environment with the growth of automobile industry. Recently, an airbag system is required to protect the occupant. The effects of an airbag can be evaluated exactly from the barrier or sled test which is quite expensive. The airbag system in a passenger car is analyzed with the occupant analysis program. The modeling of the passenger car including an airbag is established and the results are verified by comparisons with real crash tests. However, the solution of an airbag design can not be obtained easily with the conventional method such as an optimization due to the nonlinearity and complexity of the problem. An iterative design algorithm using the orthogonal array is proposed to overcome the difficulties. The design trend of an airbag is recommended to minimize the injury of an occupant with the proposed design algorithm and the results are discussed.
The express/intercity bus models have been developing for wheelchair users to provide the preferable long-distance travels by the Korean government research. In the previous studies, evaluation method was set up for the wheelchair users' safety and the study for wheelchair occupants' safety was performed under various crash loadings mimic to real accidents, frontal crash, side impact and rollover, etc. This study was focused on the evaluation of occupant behaviors and injuries (head and chest) during vehicle impact loading cases in order to ensure the safety of wheelchair passengers in the bus. The occupant response and belt loading data during the sled FE simulation were compared with those of the sled test. The simulation results showed overall safety tolerances of wheelchair occupants under the severe frontal deceleration, side impact loading based on the FMVSS 214 configuration and bus rollover loading.
The design process of the motor driven tilt/telescopic steering column is established by axiomatic design approach in conceptual design stage. By selecting independent design variables for improvin g performance of the steering system, each detailed design can be carried out independently. In the detailed design, the safety in crash environment and vibration reduction are considered. An occupant analysis code SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Environment) is utilized to simulate the body block test. Segments, contact ellipsoids and spring-damper elements are used to model the steering column in SAFE. The model is verified by the result of the body block test. After the model is validated, the energy absorbing components are designed using an orthogonal array. Occupant analyses are performed for the cases of the orthogonal array. Final design is determined for the minimum occupant injury. For vibrational analysis, a finite element model of the steering column is defined for the modal analysis. The model is validated by the vibration experiment. Size and shape variables are selected for the optimization process. An optimization is conducted to minimize the weight subjected to various constraints.
