  • The author obtained 120 oblique-lateral transcranial radiograms by two projection methods from 30 subjects with clinically normal TMJ. The relative position of the condyle within the articular fossa and the quality of the radiographic images were compared in the standardized and individualized radiographic groups. The results were as follows: 1. The condylar position in the individualized radiographic group was more posterior than that in the standardized radiographic group (P<0.001). 2. The horizontal angle between the long axis of condyle and intermeatal line in the individualized group ranged from 0° to 31° (14.38°±7.55°), and the highest prevalence was found between 15 and 19° 3. The individualized group showed prominent radiopaque shadow of the anterior condylar border; the image detail was superior in the standardized group to that of the individualized group (P<0.05).

  • The effect of surface texture on elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) point contact of a ball Joint mechanism in small reciprocating compressors is studied numerically by using multigrid method. Pressure and film thickness profiles have been calculated for surface roughness with waviness of different orientations and transverse ridge and dent at minimum and maximum Hoes M parameter conditions. The influence of the amplitude and the wavelength of the surface roughness was also studied. Results show that the oblique waviness with orientation angle of 30$^{\circ}$generates the smallest minimum film thickness as compared with those of longitudinal, transverse, and other oblique roughness. The influence of transverse waviness on the minimum film thickness is smaller than for the longitudinal waviness case.

  • Generally, butt welds with plate thickness $30{\sim}40mm$ are welded with groove angle $40^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$, etc. In the detection of internal weld defects, oblique testing with single probe has been mainly used. But, recently, in acccordance with enlargement of welded structure, thick plate with 100-200mm are frequently required. Thus I-groove welding method was lately developed and often used. In this case, most frequently generated defects are the lack of weld penetration and incomplete fusion between base metal and welding material. If we would detect by oblique testing with single probe, detecting flaw is occassionally impossible or very underestimated. In this study, the limit for applying tandem method was studied in dise and band type flaws. The estimation of flaw size could be within 10% error compared to real flaws.

  • Non destructive test is applied to revise mechanical strength and assume material strength or defect of material, equipment and structure, instead of fracture test. Especially, ultrasonic test has the characteristics such as an excellent permeability high-sensitiveness to fine defect and an almost exact measurement for position, size and direction of inner defect which differ from other non destructive tests. In this study, the program is developed to evaluate optimal testing condition, to distinguish obstacle echo and defect position. This program on the basic of Ray-Tracing model shows generation and processing of ultrasonic pulse. The simulation is compared with testing in the 3 cases of an oblique angle transducer like $45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}\;and\;70^{\circ}$. The test result for all conditions is well compared with simulation result when relative not is within $0.1{\sim}7.2%$. And the course of several echos is simply assumed through simulation.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the change of abdominal muscle activation during unilateral leg raising in supine position among three hip abduction angles($0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$). Methods : Twenty eight able-body volunteers who had no medical history of low back and hip joint were recruited for this study. Abdominal muscle activity was recorded using surface EMG from both sides of the rectus abdominis, internal/external oblique muscle during leg raising in each position. Results : The muscle activations induced under the three different positions were compared and results showed that there was significant difference only in the right external oblique muscle activation. Conclusion : This study suggest that leg raising of different hip abduction angles without trunk control has little influence on abdominal muscle co-activation.

  • In this paper, we studied the electro-optical(EO) performance of photo-aligned twisted nematic(TN)-liquid crystal display(LCD) with oblique non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) surface. The monodomain alignment of photo-aligned TN-LCD is obtained with an angle of incidence of $85^{\circ}$ on PI surface. Also, we observed that the voltage transmittance and response time characteristics of photo-aligned TN-LCD is almost same compared to rubbing treated TN-LCD. Finally, we measured that the voltage-holding-ratio(VHR) of photo-aligned TN-LCD is almost same compared to rubbing treated TN-LCD.

  • A mechanistic model is developed to predict the thrust force and cutting torque of drilling process including wear. A mechanistic oblique cutting force model is used to develop the drilling force model. The cutting lips are divided into small elements and elemental forces are calculated by multiplying the specific cutting pressure with the elemental chip area. The specific cutting pressure is a function of chip thickness, cutting velocity, rake angle and wear. The total forces are then computed by summing the elemental forces. Measured cutting forces are in good agreement with the simulated cutting forces.

  • The purpose of this paper is to simulate the collision between a KHST 3D model and an oblique truck and to investigate zigzagging phenomenon. The used train model is the deformable KHST 3D model, its velocity is 110kph, and the angle of the truck is 30 degree. In order to check lateral forces between wheels and rails, the KEYWORDs that LS_DYNA provides, *RAIL_TRACK and *RAIL_TRAIN are used.

  • Purpose: Recent studies have indicated that applying different inclination angles and suspension devices could be a useful way of performing exercises that include the co-activation of the trunk muscles. Present study was to examine the influences of changes in the inclination angle during trunk muscle activity while engaging in a bridge exercise with a suspension device. Methods: 18 healthy, physically active male volunteers completed three trunk inclination angles (15°, 30°, and 45°) for bridge exercise variations. The surface electromyography responses of the rectus abdominis, internal oblique (IO), erector spinae (ES), and rectus femoris (RF), as well as the subjective difficulty (Borg RPE score), were investigated during these bridge exercises. Results: The bridge with a 45° inclination angle suspension significantly increased the muscular activities of the RA and RF and increased the Borg RPE scores (p<0.05). The bridge with a 15° suspension significantly elevated the ES activities when compared to the other conditions. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that a higher inclination angle could not activate the overall trunk muscles during the bridge exercise. The RA and RF produced greater activation during the bridge exercise with the higher inclination angle. On the other hand, the activities of the erector spine were greater during the bridge exercise with the lower inclination angle. The present study suggests that applying a low trunk inclination angle for the supine bridge exercise is suitable for activating the erector spine muscles.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of bridge exercise on the structural characteristics of trunk muscles in patients with lumbar pain by applying the exercise on either a stable or an unstable surface. Methods: Thirty subjects participated in the experiment and were randomly divided into an unstable bridge exercise group (UBEG) and a stable bridge exercise group (SBEG). The exercise program for each group was conducted three times a week over a six-week period. The structural characteristics of trunk muscles were measured by obtaining images using an ultrasound imaging device. Results: The thicknesses of the external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and transverse abdominis (TrA) and the fiber angle of the erector spinae (ES) in the UBEG and the SBEG showed statistically significant increases in all items measured after the experiment. A comparison of groups conducted after the experiment to determine the effects of the exercise on each group showed no significant differences between groups for any of the measured items. Conclusion: A comprehensive review of the study results showed statistically significant increases in the thicknesses of the EO, IO, and TrA and the fiber angle of ES in both the UBEG and the SBEG. While the comparison of the groups with respect to the effects of the exercise revealed no significant differences, there were relatively larger effects in the UBEG than in the SBEG.
