Infrared thermography uses infrared energy radiated from any objects above absolute zero temperature, and the range of its application has been constantly broadened. As one of the active test techniques detecting radiant energy generated when energy is applied to an object, ultrasound infrared thermography is a method of detecting defects through hot spots occurring at a defect area when 15~100 kHz of ultrasound is excited to an object. This technique is effective in detecting a wide range affected by ultrasound and vibration in real time. Especially, it is really effective when a defect area is minute. Therefore, this study conducted thermography through lock-in signal processing when an actual defect exists inside the austenite STS304 seamless pipe, which simulates thermal fatigue cracks in a nuclear power plant pipe. With ultrasound excited, this study could detect defects on the rear of a pipe by using an aluminium reflector. Besides, by regulating the angle of the aluminium reflector, this study could detect both front and rear defects as a single infrared thermography image.

MV (Moving Vehicle) detection using satellite imagery is important for traffic monitoring and provides a wide range of observations. Specifically, MV detection methods utilizing the time lag in single-pass optical satellite images have been studied for detecting MVs from a single set of images. Because of limitations in detecting MVs outside of roads, most previous studies required road information to limit the moving object to cars on the road. However, it is difficult to obtain road information from inaccessible areas. Therefore, this study proposed a new method for detecting MVs regardless of their locations from single-pass optical satellite images without using additional data. WV-3 (Worldview-3) satellite images were used, and a spatial correlation coefficient map was proposed to detect spatial displacement which denotes MVs across two WV-3 MS images. Finally, evaluation was performed through quantitative metrics and visual inspection. The evaluation results revealed that the proposed method can detect MV movements from the single-pass satellite images. On the contrary, misdetected or undetected MVs due to radiometric differences between the images could be identified by visual inspection. The performance of the proposed method can be improved by minimizing radiometric variations and adding conditions that are robust to radiometric differences between the images.

Recently, research on license plate recognition, which is a core technology of an intelligent transportation system(ITS), is being actively conducted. In this paper, we propose a method to extract numbers and characters from low-quality license plate images by applying the YOLOv4 algorithm. YOLOv4 is a one-stage object detection method using convolution neural network including BACKBONE, NECK, and HEAD parts. It is a method of detecting objects in real time rather than the previous two-stage object detection method such as the faster R-CNN. In this paper, we studied a method to directly extract number and character regions from low-quality license plate images without additional edge detection and image segmentation processes. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method we experimented with 500 license plate images. In this experiment, 350 images were used for training and the remaining 150 images were used for the testing process. Computer simulations show that the mean average precision of detecting number and character regions on vehicle license plates was about 93.8%.

One major advantage of ground penetrating radar (GPR) over other field test methods is its ability to obtain subsurface images of roads in an efficient and non-intrusive manner. Not only can the strata of pavement structure be retrieved from the GPR scan images, but also various irregularities, such as cracks and internal cavities. This article introduces a deep learning-based approach, focusing on detecting subsurface cracks by recognizing their distinctive hyperbolic signatures in the GPR scan images. Given the limited road sections that contain target features, two data augmentation methods, i.e., feature insertion and generation, are implemented, resulting in 9,174 GPR scan images. One of the most popular real-time object detection models, You Only Learn One Representation (YOLOR), is trained for detecting the target features for two types of subsurface cracks: bottom cracks and full cracks from the GPR scan images. The former represents partial cracks initiated from the bottom of the asphalt layer or base layers, while the latter includes extended cracks that penetrate these layers. Our experiments show the test average precisions of 0.769, 0.803 and 0.735 for all cracks, bottom cracks, and full cracks, respectively. This demonstrates the practicality of deep learning-based methods in detecting subsurface cracks from GPR scan images.

In this paper, we present a novel method for simultaneous detection and tracking of multiple objects using dual-layer particle filtering. The proposed dual-layer particle sampling (DLPS) algorithm consists of parent-particles (PP) in the first layer for detecting multiple objects and child-particles (CP) in the second layer for tracking objects. In the first layer, PPs detect persons using a classifier trained by the intersection kernel support vector machine (IKSVM) at each particle under a randomly selected scale. If a certain PP detects a person, it generates CPs, and makes an object model in the detected object region for tracking the detected object. While PPs that have detected objects generate CPs for tracking, the rest of PPs still move for detecting objects. Experimental results show that the proposed method can automatically detect and track multiple objects, and efficiently reduce the processing time using the sampled particles based on motion distribution in video sequences.

In this paper, a new method for detecting various objects that can be risks to safety navigation in sea environment is proposed. By analysing Infrared(IR) images obtained from various sea environments, we could find out that object regions include both horizontal and vertical direction edges while background regions of sea surface mainly include vertical direction edges. Therefore, we present an approach to detecting object regions considering horizontal and vertical edges. To this end, in the first step, image enhancement is performed by suppressing noises such as sea glint and complex clutters using a statistical filter. In the second step, a horizontal edge map and a vertical edge map are generated by 1-D Discrete Cosine Transform technique. Then, a combined map integrating the horizontal and the vertical edge maps is generated. In the third step, candidate object regions are detected by a adaptive thresholding method. Finally, exact object regions are extracted by eliminating background and clutter regions based on morphological operation.
Object Tracking is a technique for tracking moving objects over time in a video image. Using object tracking technique, many research are conducted such a detecting dangerous situation and recognizing the movement of nearby objects in a smart car. However, it still remains a challenging task such as occlusion, deformation, background clutter, illumination variation, etc. In this paper, we propose a novel deep visual object tracking method that can be operated in robust to many challenging task. For the robust visual object tracking, we proposed a Convolutional Neural Network(CNN) which shares weight of the convolutional layers. Input of the CNN is a three; first frame object image, object image in a previous frame, and current search frame containing the object movement. Also we propose a method to consider the motion of the object when determining the current search area to search for the location of the object. Extensive experimental results on a authorized resource database showed that the proposed method outperformed than the conventional methods.
This work describes a real-time method, based on motion energy detection, for detecting and tracking moving object in the consecutive image sequences. The motion of moving objects is detected by taking the difference of the two consecutive image frames. In addition an edge information of the current image is utilized in order to further increase the accuracy of detection. We can track the moving objects continuously by detecting the motion of objects from the sequence of image frames. A prototype system has been implemented using a TI TMS320C6201 EVM fixed-point DSP board, which can successfully track a moving human in real-time.
In this paper, we present early processing techniques for visual inspection of metallic parts. Since metallic surfaces give rise to specular reflections, it is difficult to extract object boundaries using elementary segmentation techniques such as edge detection or binary thresholding. In this paper, we present two techniques for finding object boundaries on micro bit images. First, we explain a technique for detecting blade boundaries using a directional correlation mask. Second, a line and angle extraction technique based on Harris corner detector and Hough transform is described. These techniques have been effective for detecting blade boundaries, and a number of experimental results are presented using real images.

The solid-state drive (SSD) possesses higher input and output speeds, more resistance to physical shock, and lower latency compared with regular hard disks; hence, it is an increasingly popular storage device. However, tiny components on an internal printed circuit board (PCB) hinder the manual detection of malfunctioning components. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies, automatic detection of components through convolutional neural networks (CNN) can provide a sound solution for this area. This study proposes applying the YOLOv5 model to SSD PCB component detection, which is the first step in detecting defective components. It achieves pioneering state-of-the-art results on the SSD PCB dataset. Contrast experiments are conducted with YOLOX, a neck-and-neck model with YOLOv5; evidently, YOLOv5 obtains an mAP@0.5 of 99.0%, essentially outperforming YOLOX. These experiments prove that the YOLOv5 model is effective for tiny object detection and can be used to study the second step of detecting defective components in the future.
