Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the difference between gustatory functions in a sleep disordered breathing (SDB) group and a control group. The pathogenesis of SDB has not been fully understood. Though the precise contributions of neuromuscular and anatomical factors on SDB pathogenesis are still debated, we hypothesized that the gustatory dysfunction could be predisposed to SDB. Methods: All patients were diagnosed as SDB by polysomnography (PSG). On the basis of PSG results, patients were divided into 3 groups: snoring, mixed, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The control group comprised healthy volunteers who were the same age as those of the SDB group and whose breathing was verified as normal using a portable sleep monitor device. The patient group and the control group were evaluated for gustatory functions with an electrogustometry (EGM). The electrical taste thresholds were measured in the anterior, midlateral, and posterior sides of the tongue and soft palatal regions, both sides. To find out the difference in EGM scores, statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-wallis and Mann-Whitney U test with 95% confidence interval and p<0.05 significance level. Results: The patients with SDB had higher EGM scores than the control group at all spots tested, except for the right midlateral of the tongue, and there was a statistical significance in the comparison between the control group and the divided SDB groups, respectively. Among the divided SDB groups, the snoring group had the most significant differences in the number of the measured spots, but there was no difference among the snoring, mixed, and OSA groups. Conclusions: These results may suggest that neurologic alterations with sleep disordered breathing could be associated with gustatory dysfunction. In the future, further systemic studies will be needed to confirm this study.
Cookies containing wheat flour mixed with 10, 30 or 50% esterified with octenylsuccinic anhydride (OSA, 3%) and dry-heated ($130^{\circ}C$, 2 hr) high amylose rice (Goami 2) starch (DH-OSAR) were prepared and then their physical and digestive properties were evaluated. When the amount of added DH-OSAR increased, the hardness and brittleness of the cookies decreased, and L (brightness) value increased. For the digestive properties, the cookies containing 50% DH-OSAR significantly increased the amount of slowly digestible starch (SDS), and decreased the amount of rapidly digestible starch (RDS), resulting in the lowest expected Glycemic Index (eGI) among tested cookies. Although the cookies containing DHOSAR were inferior to the control, the addition of xanthan gum (0.5% based on total powder amount) significantly improved their textural and sensory properties. Specially, the cookies containing 50% DH-OSAR and the addition of 0.5% xanthan gum showed the lowest eGI value, maintaining the improved textural and sensory properties.
The most widely used block convolution method is the overlap save algorithm (OSA), where a block of M data to be convolved with a filter is concatenated with the previous block and 2M-point FFT and multiplications are performed for this overlapped block. By discarding half of the results, we obtain linear convolution results from the circular convolution. This paper proposes a new transform which reduces the block size to only M for the block convolution. The proposed transform can be implemented as the M multiplications followed by M-point FFT Hence, existing efficient FFT libraries and hardware can be exploited for the implementation of proposed method. Since the required transform size is half that of the conventional method, the overall computational complexity is reduced. Also the reduced transform size results in the reduction of data access time and cash miss-hit ratio, and thus the overall CPU time is reduced. Experiments show that the proposed method requires less computation time than the conventional OSA.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type of sleep apnea and is caused by obstruction of the upper airway. Since it is closely related to sleep parameter and body indices, the study was focused on the relationship with them. The results of polysomnography (PSG) in obstructive sleep apnea was done at ENT department of Ewha women university Mokdong hospital from March to September 2010 with 52 subjects (male 35, female 17). The leads were placed to measure electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), mandibular and anterior tibialis electromyogram (EMG), airflow in nasal and oral cavity, chest and abdominal breathing pattern, snoring sound and arterial oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) level. From sleep parameter and body indices of adult obstructive sleep apnea compared to normal adult revealed that age (p<0.01) and snoring sound (p<0.05) were increased, stage 1 sleep (p<0.01) was increased, the deeper stages (3&4) of sleep (p<0.05) were reduced. Respiratory disturbance index (RDI) (p<0.01), mean $SpO_2$ (p<0.05) and lowest $SpO_2$ (p<0.01) were also decreased. The correlation analysis from sleep parameter and body indices of OSA showed the positive correlation with age (r=0.463, p<0.001), snoring sound (r=0.278, p<0.05), stage 1 sleep (r=0.391, p<0.01) and RDI (r=0.409, p<0.01), but showed the negative correlation with the deeper stages (3&4) of sleep (r=-0.307, p<0.05), mean $SpO_2$=(r=-0.274, p<0.05) and lowest $SpO_2$ (r=-0.392, p<0.01). This study proves that obstructive sleep apnea and indices have closed related.
Natural sleep pattern and its physiology in childhood are much different from those in adulthood. Several aspects of clinical evaluation for sleepiness in childhood are more difficult than in adulthood. These difficulties are due to several factors. First, excessive sleepiness in childhood do not always develop functional impairments. Second, objective test such as MSLT may not be reliable since it is hard to be certain that the child understand instructions. Third, sleepiness in children is often obscured by irritability. paradoxical hyperactivity, or behavioral disturbances. Anseguently, careful clinical evaluation is needed for the sleepy children. Usual causes of sleepiness in children are the disorders that induce insufficient sleep such as sleep apnea syndrome, schedule disorder, underlying medical and psychiatric disorder, and so forth. After excluding such factors, we can diagnose the hypersomnic disorders such as narcolepsy, Kleine-Levin syndrome, and idiopathic central nervous system hypersomnia. Among the variety of those causes of sleepiness, I reviewed the clinical difference of narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in childhood compared with in adulthood. Recognition of the childhood narcolepsy is difficult because even severely sleepy children often do not develop pathognomic cataplexy and associated REM phenomena until much later. Since childhood narcolepsy give srise to many psychological, academical problem. Practicers should be concerned about these aspects. Childhood obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is different from adult obstructive sleep apnea syndrome too. Several aspects such as pathophysiology. clinical feature, diagnostic criteria, complication, management, and prognosis differ from those in the adult syndrome. An important feature of childhood obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is the variety of severe complications such as behavioral disorders, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular symptoms, developmental delay, and ever death. Fortunately, surgical interventions like adenotosillectomy or UPPP are more effective for Childhood OSA than adult form. CPAP is a "safe, effective, and well-tolerated" treatment modality too. So if early detection and proper management of childhood OSA were done, the severe complication would be prevented or ever cured.
Background: The posterior movement of mandible was known as the main cause of the changes in the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) and the postoperative obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The purpose of this study was to know the changes of PAS and position of hyoid bone. Methods: Lateral cephalographies of 13 patients who had undergone sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) setback surgery were taken preoperatively (T1), postoperatively within 2 months (T2), and follow-up after 6 months or more (T3). On the basis of F-H plane, diameters of nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx were measured. The movements of the soft palate, tongue, and hyoid bone were also measured. Results: The amount of mandible setback was $7.5{\pm}3.8mm$. In the measurements of PAS, there was a statistically significant decrease of $2.8{\pm}2.5mm$ in nasopharynx (P < 0.01), and $1.7{\pm}2.4mm$ in oropharynx (P < 0.01) were observed after surgery. The hypopharynx decreased $1.0{\pm}2.1mm$ after surgery and continuously decreased $1.0{\pm}2.8mm$ at follow-up. The changes in hyoid bone position showed the posterior movement only after surgery and posteroinferior movement at follow-up. Conclusions: The PAS such as nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx showed relatively high correlation with the amount of mandibular setback. The change of resistance in upper airway may be important for the prevention of OSA after mandibular setback surgery.
The chemical composition and characteristics of the source rock collected from Dolgorae-1 well in Korea continental shelf block VI( $35^{\circ}$ 18'N.L., $130^{\circ}$ 28'E) have been investigated. An oil show analyzer(OSA) has been used to determine the contents of gas, oil and total organic carbon(TOC). The average TOC value for the sample is found to be 0.59%. The OSA has also provided hydrogen index and $T_{max}$, the maximum temperature which generate maximum hydrocarbons from kerogen. From a $T_{max}$-hydrogen index diagram the type of organic matter in the source rock was estimated to be type III kerogen. The content of bitumen and its molecular weight have been determined by means of extraction method and gel permeation chromatograph, respectively. The physicochemical properties has been studied using X-ray diffraction spectrometer, IR spectrometer and thermogravimetric method. On the basis of the results obtained in the present work, the samples collected from Dolgorae-1 well are evaluated to be poor source rocks.

Objective: The efficacy of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) ranges between 42% and 65%. However, it is still unclear which predictive factors can be used to select suitable patients for MAD treatment. This study aimed to systematically review the literature on the predictive value of cephalometric analysis for MAD treatment outcomes in adult OSA patients. Methods: The MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were searched through December 2014. Reference lists from the retrieved publications were also examined. English language studies published in international peer-reviewed journals concerning the predictive value of cephalometric analysis for MAD treatment outcome were considered for inclusion. Two review authors independently assessed eligibility, extracted data, and ascertained the quality of the studies. Results: Fifteen eligible studies were identified. Most of the skeletal, dental, and soft tissue cephalometric measurements examined were widely recognized as not prognostic for MAD treatment outcome; however, controversial and limited data were found on the predictive role of certain cephalometric measurements including cranial base angle, mandibular plane angle, hyoid to mandibular plane distance, posterior nasal spine to soft-palate tip distance, anterior nasal spine to epiglottis base distance, and tongue/oral cross sectional area ratio thus justifying additional studies on these parameters. Conclusions: Currently available evidence is inadequate for identification of cephalometric parameters capable of reliably discriminating between poor and good responders to MAD treatment. To guide further research, methodological weaknesses of the currently available studies were highlighted and possible reasons for their discordant results were analyzed.
Implementation of a wavelength-swept source with constant tuning rate adopting a PZT-type tunable filter, requires the knowledge of hysteresis of the filter used. The hysteresis must be considered to avoid any degradation in resolution of the optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) system. An optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) could be used to do the hysteresis measurement, but its measurement time is too long for the high-speed driving conditions for the filter. We proposed a new hysteresis measurement method based on OFDR, which could measure the hysteresis in a real driving condition. A hysteresis measurement apparatus consisted of wavelength-swept source, interferometer, signal processing unit, and PC program is built and used to do the measurement. It is concluded that the new method is useful in the measurement of hysteresis at real driving conditions by successfully implementing a swept-wavelength source whose wavelength change is linear in time.

Long Period Gratings (LPG) is currently receiving considerable attention because of their consistent measuring results fur pressure, temperature, strain and flow. LPG is easier to prepare and has a high sensitivity compared with Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). In addition, this kind of optical fiber sensors could be used for implementations in various structures. In this paper, LPG was used to monitor in situ the resin flow and the curing process in VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer. Molding). In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method, FBG is inserted into the glass mat to monitor the resin flow using optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). The curing reactions in VARTM are also observed using the same method. From the results, the attenuation wavelength shift and the loss change of attenuation band can be obtained from the status of the RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) sample owing to the internal variations of the .effective index, temperature, and pressure. It is shown that the proposed LPG is more effective in monitoring the curing reaction than FBG.
