Applications of Polymers in Bioseparations and Delivery of Biomolecules

  • Polymers are widely applied in bioseparation processes as well as in drug delivery systems. These two fields have a certain commonality, in that they involve either removal or delivery of specific biomolecules from or to an aqueous environment It is also to be noted that therapeutic toxin renloval is an example of a bioseparation process. This presentation will focus on the use of polys!ors in physical as well as biospecific separations and delivery of biomolecules. Several new systems will also be described.

  • Within LG.Philips Displays electron gun assembly different grid alignment methods are used. Besides the commonly used mandrel alignment of grids (Inner Reference System, IRS), also a unique Outer Reference System (ORS) is used as grid alignment method in high-end gun assembly. This alignment method combines alignment accuracy with maximum electron optical design freedom and maximum flexibility in electron gun production.

  • In this paper, we propose the method to derive new GRM(Generalized Reed-Muller) coefficients for each 2$^n$ polarities using Triangle cell. As the existing methods to generate GRM coefficients, there are Green's method to operate transform matrix with a given RM coefficient and Besslich's method to get other polarities using basic transfer matrices repeatedly. In this paper, Triangle cell is defined so as to obtain GRM coefficients efficiently. After arranging 2$^n$ given RM coefficients of a first row of Triangle cell, sequence modulo sum is peformed in parallel to low column by a fixed numerical formula. To prove the efficiency of proposed arithmetic method, it is compared with Besslich’s method. As the compared result, to calculate GRM coefficients of all polarities to n input variables, Besslich’s method needs 2$^n$$^{-1}$ ${\times}$(2$^n$-1) two-input Ex-ORs and the proposed method needs 2${\times}$(the number of Ex-ORs for n-1 variables)+3$^n$$^{-1}$ for the same system complexity - (lo $g_2$$^n$) $T_{X}$./.

Association Between Parental Marital Status and Types of Suicidal Behavior Among Korean Adolescents: A Cross-sectional Study

  • Objectives: Adolescent suicide is a global problem. This study aimed to identify associations between parental marital status and suicidal behavior. Methods: This study analyzed 118 715 middle and high school students from the 13th and 14th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The odds ratios (ORs) of suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts were calculated based on parental marital status, living situation, and socioeconomic factors. The data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. Results: When compared to those living with 2 married biological parents, the ORs of suicidal ideation among adolescents living with either remarried or no parents were 1.34 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17 to 1.53) and 1.36 (95% CI, 1.11 to 1.66), respectively. For suicidal planning, the OR of those living with 1 remarried biological parent was 1.24 (95% CI, 1.01 to 1.52), and that of those living without parents was 1.28 (95% CI, 0.95 to 1.73), when compared to adolescents living with 2 married biological parents. For suicide attempts, when compared to adolescents with 2 married biological parents, the OR of those living with 1 remarried biological parent was 1.48 (95% CI, 1.17 to 1.87) and that of those living without parents was 2.02 (95% CI, 1.44 to 2.83). For adolescents living with 1 remarried biological parent, suicidal behavior was strongly associated with having no siblings and were weakly associated with not living with grandparents. Conclusions: Suicidal behavior among adolescents was associated with the remarriage and loss of parents. Therefore, special attention and interventions are needed for adolescents in those situations.

Diagnostic Significance of Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Values with Diffusion Weighted MRI in Breast Cancer: a Meta-Analysis

  • Aims: Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of nodes in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) are widely used in differentiating metastatic from non-metastatic lymph nodes. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to demonstrate whether DWI could contribute to the precise diagnosis of breast cancer (BC) with and without lymph node metastasis (LNM). Materials and Methods: English and Chinese electronic databases were searched for relevant studies followed by a comprehensive literature search. Two reviewers independently assessed the methodological quality of the included trials based on the quality assessment of diagnostic accuracy studies (QUADAS). Summary odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated. Results: Final analysis of 624 BC subjects (patients with LNM = 254, patients without LNM = 370) were incorporated into the current meta-analysis from 9 eligible cohort studies. Combined ORs of ADCs suggested that ADC values in BC patients without LNM were higher than in patients with LNM (OR=0.56, 95%CI: 0.11-1.01, p=0.015). Subgroup analysis stratified by country indicated a low ADC value in BC patients with LNM rather than those without LNM among Chinese (OR=1.27, 95%CI: 0.89-1.66, p<0.001), Italians (OR=0.75, 95%CI: 0.13-1.38, p=0.018), and Egyptians (OR=1.27, 95%CI: 0.71-1.84, p<0.001). The findings of subgroup analysis by MRI machine type revealed that ADC values from diffusion MRI may be potential diagnostic indicators for BC using Non-Philips 1.5T (OR=1.10, 95%CI: 0.84-1.36, p<0.001). Conclusions: The main findings of our meta-analysis demonstrated that increased signal intensity on DWI and decreased signals on ADC are helpful in diagnosis of BC patients with or without LNM. DWI could therefore be an important imaging investigation in patients suspected of BC.

Association between the NQO1 C609T Polymorphism with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Risk in the Chinese Population

  • Background: Associations between the NQO1 C609T polymorphism and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk are a subject of debate. We therefore performed the present meta-analysis to evaluate links with HCC susceptibility. Materials and Methods: Several major databases (PubMed, EBSCO), the Chinese national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI) and the Wanfang database were searched for eligible studies. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to measure the strength of associations. Results: A total of 4 studies including 1,325 patients and 1,367 controls were identified. There was a significant association between NQO1 C609T polymorphism and HCC for all genetic models (allelic model: OR=1.45, 95%CI=1.23-1.72, p<0.01; additive model: OR=1.96, 95%CI=1.57-2.43, p<0.01; dominant model: OR=1.62, 95%CI=1.38-1.91, p<0.01; and recessive model: OR=1.53, 95%CI=1.26-1.84, p<0.01). On subgroup analysis, similarly results were identified in Asians. For Asians, the combined ORs and 95% CIs were (allelic model: OR=1.50, 95%CI=1.24-1.82, p<0.01; additive model: OR=2.11, 95%CI=1.48-3.01, p<0.01; dominant model: OR=1.69, 95%CI=1.42-2.02, p<0.01; and recessive model: OR=1.59, 95%CI=1.16-2.19, p<0.01). Conclusions: The current meta-analysis suggested that the NQO1 C609T polymorphism could be a risk factor for developing HCC, particularly in the Chinese population.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Helicobacter Pylori Infection among Healthy Inhabitants in Northern Jakarta, Indonesia

  • Background: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in Indonesia has been reported to be exceedingly low. The purpose of our study was to confirm whether this is the case in Northern Jakarta using a sensitive 13C-urea breath test (UBT), and to examine any associations with lifestyle/environment factors and potential routes of transmission. Methods: We recruited a total of 196 subjects from a low-income community in Northern Jakarta, Indonesia, data from 193 who completed a questionnaire about their lifestyle/environment and had UBT being included as the final. Odds ratios (ORs) adjusted for sex and age with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a logistic regression model. Results: The overall H. pylori infection rate was 15.0% (95%CI, 10.3-20.9), with variation among Javanese (9.1%, total=77), Buginese (40.0%, 35), Betawi (9.1%, 33), Sundanese (3.7%, 27), and Batak (40.0%, 5). On multivariate analysis, the ORs for intake of soybean milk, cucumber more than once a week, infrequent hand washing practice before meals, and alcohol consumption were 0.10 (95%CI: 0.01-0.97), 6.61 (95%CI: 1.87-23.3), 4.10 (95%CI: 1.15-14.6), and 61.9 (95%CI: 1.67-2300.8), respectively. Rates for Buginese (OR=7.84; 95%CI: 1.82-33.8) and Batak (OR=20.1; 95%CI: 1.90-213.2) were significantly higher than for Javanese. Conclusions: The H. pylori infection rate in this study was relatively low, in line with previous studies. Regarding ethnicity factors, Buginese and Batak reported eating food using fingers more frequently than Javanese, Betawi, and Sundanese. Our study indicated that person-person transmission is possible in this low prevalence area. The low infection rates for H. pylori among Javanese, Betawi, and Sundanese ethnics could be partly due to their sanitary practices.

  • Hair follicles develop as a result of epithelial-mesenchymal interactions between epidermal keratinocytes and dermal cells. Moreover hair follicles constitute multiple cells that influence hair follicle development and cyclic activity. We isolated some cells using explantation and enzymatic digestion method from human scalp hair follicles. So we could culture some follicular cells, such as outer root sheath (ORS) cells, dermal papilla (DP) cells, dermal sheath (DS) cells, matrix cells and melanocyte.

The Association between Obesity and Periodontal Disease on Convergence Study (비만과 치주질환간의 관련성에 관한 융합연구)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between obesity and periodontal diseases in Korea adults. The date from the 2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used, and 4,827 subjects over 19 years were included in the analysis. Periodontal disease was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index. Obesity was measured according to body mass index. Odd ratios (ORs) were estimated using binary logistic regression analysis model. The stratification variables were smoking and diabetes, and also adjusted for sex, age, and education level. The adjusting variables included sex, age, and education level. The ORs of obesity for periodontal disease were 0.78 (95% CI = 0.51-1.22) for the category of <18.5 of BMI and 1.29 (95% CI = 1.11-1.49) for the ${\geq}25$ BMI category (both compared to the 18.5 to 24.9 category). In a subgroup analysis, the OR of BMI among those who were both non-smoking and no diabetes was 1.20 (95% CI = 1.02-1.48) for those with BMI levels ${\geq}25$. This study implies that obesity intolerance may be an independent risk factor for periodontal diseases. Obesity should also be considered when managing periodontal disease to improve oral health.

Enrollment in Private Medical Insurance and Utilization of Medical Services Among Children and Adolescents: Data From the 2009-2012 Korea Health Panel Surveys

  • Objectives: The purposes of this study were to examine the status of children and adolescents with regard to enrollment in private medical insurance (PMI) and to investigate its influence on their utilization of medical services. Methods: The present study assessed 2973 subjects younger than 19 years of age who participated in five consecutive Korea Health Panel surveys from 2009 to 2012. Results: At the initial assessment, less than 20% of the study population had not enrolled in any PMI program, but this proportion decreased over time. Additionally, the number of subjects with more than two policies increased, the proportions of holders of indemnity-type only ('I'-only) and of fixed amount+indemnity-type ('F+I') increased, whereas the proportion of holders with fixed amount-type only ('F'-only) decreased. Compared with subjects without private insurance, PMI policyholders were more likely to use outpatient and emergency services, and the number of policies was proportionately related to inpatient service utilization. Regarding outpatient care, subjects with 'F'-only PMI used these services more often than did uninsured subjects (odds ratio [OR], 1.69), whereas subjects with 'I'-only PMI or 'F+I' PMI utilized a broad range of inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services relative to uninsured subjects (ORs for 'I'-only: 1.39, 1.63, and 1.38, respectively; ORs for 'F+I': 1.67, 2.09, and 1.37, respectively). Conclusions: The findings suggest public policy approaches to standardizing PMI contracts, reform in calculation of premiums in PMI, re-examination regarding indemnity insurance products, and mutual control mechanisms to mediate between national health insurance services and private insurers are required.
