  • In this work, the electro-magnetic interference (EMI) characteristics of PAN-based carbon fibers-reinforced composites are investigated with difference to manufactural parameters, i.e., fiber grade, fiber orientation angle, and laminating method. As a result, EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of the composites greatly depends on a fiber orientation in composite angle. Especially, the fiber grade affects SE of composites in case of orientation angle of 0$^{\circ}$. Then the SE become greater as the change of electric character according to the arrangement directions, i.e., electrical anisotropy in the same constituent materials. This is due to the skin effect which is represented in the surface of electro-magnetic wave in high-frequency range. In all cases according to lamination methods, the composites represents SE of 83~98% over. Whereas, in symmetric and unsymmetric laminate structures, the SE decreases slightly as the laminate angles of composites increases. On the contrary. the repeating laminates structure shows the opposite tendency. Especially, 90$^{\circ}$ repeating laminate structure shows the SE more than 90% over the measuring frequency.

  • An aluminum or CFRP (Carbon Fiber ReinfDrced Plastics)is representative one of light-weight materials but its axial collapse mechanism is different from each other. The aluminum member absorbs energy by stable plastic deformation, while the CFRP member absorbs energy by unstable brittle failure with higher specific strength and stiffness than those in the aluminum member. In an attempt to achieve a synergy effect by combining the two members, aluminum CFRP compound square members were manufactured, which are composed of aluminum members wrapped with CFRP outside aluminum square members with different fiber orientation angle and thickness of CFRP, and axial collapse tests were performed fur the members. The axial collapse characteristics of the compound members were analyzed and compared with those of the respective aluminum members and CFRP members. Test results showed that the collapse of the aluminum CFRP compound member complemented unstable brittle failure of the CFRP member due to ductile characteristics of the inner aluminum member. The collapse modes were categorized into four modes under the iuluence of the fiber orientation angle and thickness of CFRP. The absorbed energy Per unit mass, which is in the light-weight aspect was higher in the aluminum CFRP compound member than that in the aluminum member and the CFRP member alone.

  • We studied the effects of induction of natural convection instability flow (NCIF) according to the gravitational orientation (inclined angle) of the membrane cell on the reduction of membrane fouling in the constant-flow ultrafiltration (UF) of colloidal silica solutions. Five colloidal silica solutions with different silica size (average size = 7, 12, 22, 50 nm and 78 nm) were used as UF test solutions. The silica particles in colloidal solutions form cakes on the membrane surface thereby causing severe membrane fouling. The constant-flow UF performance according to the gravitational orientation of the membrane cell (from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ inclined angle), was examined in an unstirred dead-end cell. We evaluate the effects of NCIF on the suppression of fouling formation by measuring the variation of transmembrane pressure (TMP) and the increase of critical flux by using the flux-stepping method. In the constant-flow dead-end UF for the smaller size (7, 12 nm and 22 nm) silica colloidal solutions, changing the gravitational orientation (inclined angle) of the membrane cell above the $30^{\circ}$ angle induces NCIF in the membrane module. This induced NCIF enhances back transport of the deposited silica solutes away from the membrane surface, therefore gives for the reduction of TMP. But in the constant-flow UF for the more larger size (50 nm and 78 nm) silica colloidal solutions, NCIF effects are not appearing. The critical flux is increased as increasing the module angle and decreasing the silica size. Those results show that the intesity of NCIF occurrence in membrane module is more higher as increasing the module angle and decreasing the silica size.

  • An Experimental investigation into the effects of the blowing jet type and jet orientation on the aerodynamic characteristics over an elliptic type airfoil is explored. This study is aimed at expanding the data base of blowing jet application in separation control of elliptic airfoil. Present data includes: surface pressure, blowing jet exit velocity measurements and integrated aerodynamic loads. The experiments were performed for an elliptic airfoil at Reynolds number $8.22{\times}10^5$. The improvement of effects of pulsed jet on the increase of aerodynamic characteristics was significant for the post-stall angle. For reduced mass flow rates, pulsed jet allowed considerably higher lift to be generated. The jet orientation also showed dominant parameter on the separation control Positive jet angle delay or avoid separation, whereas negative jet angle promotes it.

  • We measured the target strength according to the swimming tilt angle and size change for Pacific herring at the frequency of 70 kHz as the basic database in order to estimate its abundance as well as density in the survey area using the hydroacoustical method. The number of the sample used in this study was 14 individuals, and its size distribution by fork length ranged between 20.3 and 29.8 cm and wet weight was measured between 187.6 and 269.9 g. The variation of TS according to the swimming angle ($-30{\sim}30^{\circ}$) was measured between 10.3 and 18.8 dB in frequency range, the highest value was measured at head-down of Pacific herring in the tilt angle range between 5 and 9 deg. of its swimbladder. The relationship between TS-FL of herring was the same as $TS=20log_{10}$ (FL) - 66.79 when its swimming tilt angle in the daytime ($3.8{\pm}6.0^{\circ}$) and nighttime ($-3.2{\pm}13.6^{\circ}$), respectively.

  • We have investigated the effects of deposition angle on structural and magnetic properties of e-beam evaporated ${(4-{\AA}\;Co/9.2-{\AA}\;Pt)}_{23}$ multilayer thin films prepared on tilted substrates. It was found that the [111] crystallographic orientations of the multilayer thin films were not aligned with colummar growth orientations and they were remained to be normal to the substrate planes even though the deposition angle was severely oblique up to $60^{\circ}$. The analysis of the torque curve reveal that the intrinsic anisotropy energy was monotonically decreased with the deposition angle but the easy axis orientation parallel to the substrate normal was not much influenced by deposition angle.

  • Thin films of Pb(Mg, Zn)1/3Nb2/3O3 were fabricated by spin coating the Pb-Mg-Zn-Nb-O complex alkoxide sols on(111) Pt-coated MgO (100) planes. It was observed that the content of H2O and the rheological characteristics of sol greatly influenced the orientation of perovskite grains after thin-film formation. A strong preferential orientation of (100)-type planes of the perovskite grains was obtained for the sol aged for 15 days with the molar ratio of H2O to total metal alkoxides=2. As small angle X-ray scattering experiment in the Porod region was performed to correlate the observed preferential orientation with the network structure of precursors at various stage of aging. It was shown that the degree of branching of the Pb-Mg-Zn-Nb-O precursor chain had a direct effect on the preferred oreintation, and weakly branched precursor systems led to highly oriented grains after thin-film formation.

  • For automated guidance control of a magnetically guided-all wheel steered vehicle, it is necessary to have information about position and orientation of the vehicle, and deviations from the reference path in real time. The magnet reference system considered here consists of three magnetic sensors mounted on the vehicle and magnetic markers, which are non-equidistantly buried in the road. This paper presents an observer to estimate such position and orientation at the center of gravity of the vehicle. This algorithm is based on the simple kinematic model of vehicle and uses the data of wheel velocity, steering angle, and the discrete measurements of marker positions. Since this algorithm requires the exact values of initial states, we have also proposed an algorithm of determining the initial position and orientation from the 16 successive magnet pole data, which are given by the magnetic measurement system(MMS). The proposed algorithm is capable of continuing to estimate for the case that the magnetic sensor fail to measure up to three successive magnets. It is shown through experimental data that the proposed algorithm works well within permissible error range.

  • Controlled broadband acoustic scattering laboratory experiments were conducted using a linear chirp signal (95-220 kHz), and x-ray images of live and model fish with an artificial swim bladder were analyzed to investigate the changes in orientation and frequency dependence of target strength (TS) due to morphological differences in fish swim bladders. The broadband echoes from live and model fish were measured over an orientation angle range of ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ in the dorsal plane and in approximately $1^{\circ}$ increments. The location of nulls in the simulated echo response of the SINC [sinc function] model was overlaid on the TS map, showing the orientation and frequency dependence of fish TS, and they matched very well. It was possible to infer the equivalent fish scattering size (or swim bladder) using the null spacing in the experimentally obtained broadband TS map. Good agreement was observed for inferring the equivalent scattering size between the SINC model and the broadband echoes measured for the three fish species (black scraper Thamnaconus modestus; goldeye rockfish Sebastes thompsoni; and whitesaddled reef fish Chromis notatus). Some results of this inference are discussed.

  • To estimate the manufacturing district and generation of ancient paper as a cultural property, fiber orientation is one of the criteria. Image analysis using fast Fourier transform with suitable modifications was demonstrated to be an effective means to determine angle and intensity of fiber orientation as a nondestructive method. Binarization process of microscopic images of paper surface and precise calculation for average Fourier coefficients as an angular distribution by linear interpolation were newly introduced in the procedures to improve the accuracy. This analysis method was applied to digital optical micrographs of paper surfaces. Korea and Japanese traditional hand making papers were well distinguished. Korea and Japanese papers made in the traditional ways showed its own characteristic orientation behavior in accordance with the motion of a bamboo wire.
