  • DMSP-OLS nighttime satellite imagery could be used to derive the sum of lights (SOL) and built-up area, and the two indices have been widely employed to make the estimation of socio-economic variables and the dynamics of urban developments. Considering it, this research investigated the spatiotemporal patterns of economic growth and urbanized area in Jilin Province, China, using DMSP-OLS data for a time span between 1992 and 2012. This study found the SOLs of both the province and most cities to tend to grow during the period. While SOL-weighted centroids' means moved towards northwestern direction, urban-area centroids' means followed the trend of south-eastern migration. These directional patterns could be associated with the Northeast Revitalization Plan of Chinese governments. Nonetheless, a future study will need to consider SNPP VIIRS DNB imagery in order to overcome temporal limitation of DMSP-OLS data. In addition, it is also necessary to estimate socio-economic indices, e.g., growth regional domestic product, using a regression model developed with correlation relationship between economic statistics ad SOL.

  • The Operational Linescan System (OLS)sensor is a sensor aboard satellites launched through the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) that detects light in the visible and infrared bands emitted at night. Studies by several researchers have shown a high correlation between nighttime light data from OLS sensors and gross domestic product values. In this study, we investigated the correlation of nighttime light data with the total amount of individual land prices, which is one of the various indicators related to economic development. The study found that most cities and provinces showed a high correlation with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.7, and the correlation coefficient of 0.7837 between the total amount of individual land price and nighttime light data for the entire South Korea was also high. However, unlike other cities and provinces, Seoul has a low correlation coefficient of 0.5648 between nighttime light and the total amount of individual land price, which is analyzed as a reason that the digital number value of the OLS sensor is close to the maximum value and cannot show further brightness changes. This study is expected to help identify announced land prices in areas where announced land prices are not systematically organized and to analyze land use changes in such areas.

  • Previous studies show that tall people have better labor market outcomes, but controlling for their abilities reduces the size of height effects. This implies that a failure to properly control for one's ability could overestimate the OLS estimate. This paper contributes to the literature by being the first to control for individual fixed effects (FE) and to examine height effects on the probability of one's attaining a leadership position. The data used are panel data of a cohort obtained during the cohort's middle and high school years. In OLS estimation, this paper finds positive height effects for boys. However, when controlling for individual fixed effects, the estimate is not statistically significant. For girls, the height effects are found on neither OLS nor FE model.

  • Partial least squares regression (PLS) is a biased, non-least squares regression method and is an alternative to the ordinary least squares regression (OLS) when predictors are highly collinear or predictors outnumber observations. One way to understand the properties of biased regression methods is to know how the estimators shrink the OLS estimator. In this paper, we introduce an expression for the shrinkage factor of PLS and develop a new shrinkage expression, and then prove the equivalence of the two representations. We use two near-infrared (NIR) data sets to show general behavior of the shrinkage and in particular for what eigendirections PLS expands the OLS coefficients.

  • We employed various econometic methods to estimate the production index elasticity and the price elasticity of elecricity demand in Korea and compared the forecasting power of those methods. Cointegration models (ADL model, Engle-Granger model, Full Informtion Maximum Likelihood method by Johansen and Juselius) and Dynamic OLS by Stock and Watson were considered. The forecasting power test shows that Dynamic OLS has the best forecasting power. According to Dynamic OLS, the production index elasticity and the price elasticity of electricity demand in Korea are 0.13 and -0.40, respectively.

  • A multiple regression analysis using ordinary least square (OLS) is frequently used for the projection of health expenditure as well as for the identification of factors affecting health care costs. Data for the analysis often have mixed characteristics of time series and cross section. Parameters as a result of OLS estimation, in this case, are no longer the best linear unbiased estimators (BLUE) because the data do not satisfy basic assumptions of regression analysis. The study theoretically examined statistical problems induced when OLS estimation was applied with the time series cross section data. Then both the OLS regression and time series cross section regression (TSCS regression) were applied to the same empirical da. Finally, the difference in parameters between the two estimations were explained through residual analysis.

  • This study was performed to observe cytotoxic effect of Acetobacter aceti OLS-001 extract against cancer cell lines, including mouse leukemic lymphocyte(P388, L1210) and human rectal(HRT-18) cell. The anticancer substance were prepared by ethanol precipitation of the glass bead extraction combined with hot water of Acetobacter aceti OLS-001. The growth rates of the cancer cells in medium containing Acetobacter aceti extract were inhibited gradually to a significant degree in proportion to the increase of the extract concentration. Morphology of HRT-18 cells in medium containing Acetobacter aceti extract were seen to be shrinked and fragmented.

  • In the past 30 years, our aviation demand has been growing continuously. As such, the importance of the demand forecasting field is increasing. In this study, the factors influencing Korea's international air demand were selected, and the international air demand was analyzed, forecasted and reviewed through OLS multiple regression analysis. As a result, passenger demand was affected by GDP per capita, oil price and exchange rate, while cargo demand was affected by GDP per capita and private consumption growth rate. In particular, passenger demand was analyzed to be sensitive to temporary external shocks, and cargo demand was more affected by economic variables than temporary external shocks. Demand forecasting, OLS multiple regression analysis, passenger demand, cargo demand, transient external shocks, economic variables.

  • PURPOSE: This study aimed to assess the relationship between the severity of radiographic features and pain and function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS: Seventy-eight subjects (14 men, 64 women) with KOA, between the ages of 41 and 83 years (mean age, 61.29 years), were included. All the subjects diagnosed with KOA were scored for severity of radiographic KOA according to the Kellgren-Lawrence (K/L) grade, visual analogue scale (VAS), knee joint range of motion (ROM), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), maximum muscle power (MMP), and sit-to-stand (STS) and one-leg standing (OLS) tests. Associations among the K/L grade, diagnosis, pain, and function were examined by correlation analysis. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the K/L grade, and the VAS, STS test time, and WOMAC scores (p>.05). There were no significant differences between the K/L grade, bilateral ROM, MMP, and left OLS test time (p>.05). However, there was a significant difference between the K/L grade and right OLS test time (p<.05). The K/L grade was negatively correlated with the left OLS test time(r=-.24, p<.05) and with the right OLS test time (r=-.307, p<.01). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that radiographic KOA was not associated with pain, knee MMP, ROM, and STS test time, but had a weak negative correlation with OLS test time.

  • The ordinary least square (OLS) regression model is assumed that the relationship between distribution of longevity population and environmental factors to be identical. Therefore, the OLS regression analysis can't explain sufficiently the spatial characteristics of longevity phenomenon and related variables. The geographically weighted regression (GWR) model can be representing the spatial relationship of adjacent area using geographically weighted function. It also characterized which can locally explain the spatial variation of distribution of longevity population by environmental characteristics. From this point of view, this study was performed the comparative analysis between OLS and GWR model for ecological factors of longevity existing studies. In the results, GWR model has higher corresponded to model than OLS model and can be accounting for spatial variability about effect of specific environmental variables.
