  • In this study, the inorganic thin-film passivation layer was newly adopted to protect the organic layer from moisture and oxygen. Using the electron beam evaporation system, the various kinds of inorganic thin-films were deposited onto the organic layer and their interface properties between organic and inorganic layer were investigated. In this investigation, the MgO layer showed the most suitable properties, and based on this result, the time dependent emission properties were estimated for the OLED with and without passivation layer. In this experiment, we can see that the time-dependent emission properties of MgO passivated OLED had longer life-time compared to non-passivated OLED. Therefore, we can consider that the MgO thin film is one of the most suitable candidates for the thin-film passivation layer of OLED.

  • We investigate the solution coating process of organic small molecules that are easily recrystallized in a solvent. The spin-coated films of small molecule N,N'-diphenly-N,N'-bis(1,1'-biphenyl)-4,4'-diamine (NPB) exhibit many aggregations on the surface and thus poor surface morphology. To tackle it, we have added a chain-entangled polymer poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) into the NPB solution. It is found that a small amount of PVK indeed prohibits the recrystallization of NPB in a solvent. By the addition of PVK (30 wt%), the peak-to-peak roughness of the films is reduced from 262 nm down to 2.7 nm, which is even lower than that (~5.1 nm) of the polymer film. It is also demonstrated that OLED with the PVK-mixed NPB film shows higher current and power efficiencies, compared to OLED with the NPB or PVK film. It is attributed that the addition of PVK into NPB suppresses the occurrence of leaky channels induced by the recrystallization phenomenon.

  • We investigated light extraction film based on polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) for application in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). At least 30 seconds of direct UV irradiation process for curing PDLC film on a bottom-emitting OLEDs was successfully achieved without damage on the intrinsic properties of the OLED. We demonstrated that high haze and transmittance can be tuned simultaneously by controlling the UV curing time. By adding PDLC as an external layer without any additional treatment, the light scattering and extraction is increased. Consequently, a PDLC scattering film with 89.8% and 59.9 of total transmittance and haze respectively, achieved about 16% of light intensity enhancement from integrating sphere measurement.

  • A highly efficient organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with an in-cell polarizer made of an imprinted liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) layer doped with dichroic dye molecules is presented. The in-cell polarizer was found to be capable of effectively polarizing the emission light of the OLED and of significantly improving the luminance through the periodic microstructures fabricated using an imprinting method. This type of OLED with an imprinted in-cell polarizer is useful for efficient light source applications in liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

  • The highly integrated nature of polymer based organic light emitting diode (POLED) microdisplay technology, coupled with low voltage and low power electroluminescent light generation, combine to offer a very promising technology for use in portable and personal electronics products. We briefly describe the technology before discussing how to engineer the color gamut using whiteemitting polymer materials, microcavity device structure and color filter absorbance.

  • The emission color stability of poly(fluorene) derivatives upon thermal annealing or passage of current in an electroluminescent device is affected by the structure of the main chain polymer unit and particularly by the polymer chain end substituents. Proper attention to these features leads to colorfast blue emission in both photo- and electoluminescence. Furthermore, the spectral emission characteristics can be tuned by the incorporation of various comonomers. Preliminary single layer device studies validate the potential utility of poly(fluorene) homo and copolymers for OLED applications.

  • We demonstrate the use of screen printing in the fabrication of highly efficient phosphorescent polymer organic-light-emitting devices (OLEDs) based on a green-emitting $Ir(ppy)_3$ and a host polymer PVK. We incorporate PBD in the polymer host as an electron-transporting dopant and ${\alpha}-NPD$ as a hole transporting dopant. The best screen printed single-layer device exhibits very high peak luminous efficiency of 63 cd/A at a relatively high operating voltage of 17.1 V at the luminance of $650\;cd/m^2$. We observed the highest luminance of $21,000\;Cd/m^2$ at 35V. Due to the high operating voltage, despite of the high peak luminous efficiency the peak power efficiency was found to be 12.2 lm/W at the luminance of $470\;cd/m^2$ (15.9 V).

  • A series of novel fused-ring spiro compounds, spiro[benzo[ij]tetraphene-7,9'-fluorene] (SBTF) derivatives containing an end-capping aryl substituent at both the C3 and C10-positions hasbeen designed and synthesized via multi-step Suzuki coupling reactions. 3-(1-Naphthyl)-10-phenylSBTF (1N-PSBTF), 3-(2-naphthyl)-10-phenylSBTF (2N-PSBTF) and 3-[4-(1-naphthyl)phenyl]-10-phenylSBTF (NP-PSBTF) showed improved glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) with good thermal stability. Their photophysical, electrochemical, and electroluminescent properties were investigated and were used to construct blue organic light emission diodes (OLEDs). The typical OLED devices showed excellent performance; the NP-PSBTF-based device exhibited highly efficient deep blue-light emission with a maximum efficiency of 5.27 cd/A (EQE, 4.63%) with CIE (x = 0.133, y = 0.144). According to these characteristics, these deep-blue light emitting materials have sufficient potential for fluorescent OLED applications.

  • Organic light emitting layer in OLED device was formed by gravure printing process in this work. Organic surface coated by gravure printing typically showed relatively bad uniformity. Thickness and roughness control was characterized by applying various mixed solvents in this work. Poly (N-vinyl carbazole) (PVK) and fact-tris(2-phenylpyridine)iridium($Ir(ppy)_3$) are host dopant system materials. PVK was used as a host and Ir(ppy)3 as green-emitting dopant. To luminance efficiency of the plasma treatment on etched ITO glass and then PEDOT:PSS spin coated. The device layer structure of OLED devices is as follow Glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/PVK+Ir(ppy)3-Active layer /LiF/Al. It was printed by gravure printing technology for polymer light emitting diode (PLED). To control the thickness multi-printing technique was applied. As the number of the printing was increased the thickness enhancement was increased. To control the roughness of organic layer film, thermal annealing process was applied. The annealing temperature was varied from room temperature, $40^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, to $120^{\circ}C$.
