Electroluminescent Properties of Spiro[fluorene-benzofluorene]-Containing Blue Light Emitting Materials

  • New spiro[fluorene-7,9′-benzofluorene]-based blue host material, 5-phenyl-spiro[fluorene-7,9′-benzofluorene] (BH-1P), was successfully prepared by reacting 5-bromo-spiro[fluorene-7,9′-benzofluorene] (1) with phenyl boronic acid through the Suzuki reaction. 5-(N,N-Diphenyl)amino-spiro[fluorene-7,9′-benzofluorene] (BH-1DPA) and diphenyl-[4-(2-[1,1;4,1]terphenyl-4-yl-vinyl)-phenyl]amine (BD-1) were used as dopant materials. 2,5-Bis-(2',2"- bipyridin-6-yl)-1,1-diphenyl-3,4-diphenylsilacyclopentadiene (ET4) and Alq3 were used as electron transfer materials. Their UV absorption, photoluminescence and thermal properties were examined. The blue OLEDs with the configuration of ITO/DNTPD/$\alpha$-NPD/BH-1P:5% dopant/$Alq_3$ or ET4/LiF-Al prepared from the BH-1P host and BH-1DPA and BD-1 dopants showed a blue EL spectrum at 452 nm at 10 V and a luminance of 923.9 cd/$m^2$ with an efficiency of 1.27 lm/W at a current density of 72.57 mA/$cm^2$.

  • We have demonstrated a flexible and full-color OTFT-OLED display. The display has a top-emitting pixel structure with a resolution of 80 ppi, which can be achieved by developed integration architecture of OTFTs. The 0.3-mm-thick flexible display exhibits peak brightness over 100 nit with a contrast ratio greater than 1000:1.

Impedance Characteristics of Blue Fluorescent OLED According to Elapsed Time (경과 시간에 따른 청색 형광 OLED의 Impedance 특성)

  • In order to study current-voltage-luminance and impedance characteristics according to elapsed time, a blue fluorescent OLED was fabricated. The current density and luminance gradually decreased in accordance with elapsed time and did not emit light after 480 hours, and the threshold voltage increased as time elapsed. The Cole-Cole plot was a semicircular shape of a very large size at 2 V of the applied voltage below the threshold voltage, and the maximum value of the real number impedance did not change greatly from 9314.5 to $9902.2{\Omega}$ as time elapsed. Applied voltages 4, 6, and 8 V above the threshold voltage showed a large change in the real number impedance value at the semicircle end to 9,678.2, 9,826, $9,535.4{\Omega}$ according to the elapsed time from 2,222.5, 183.7, $48.2{\Omega}$ immediately after fabricating the device. By increasing the applied voltage beyond the threshold voltage just after device fabrication, the energy difference between the device and the organic layer was overcome and the current flowed, the maximum value of the real number impedance sharply decreased. As time passed, current did not flow through the element even at high applied voltage due to degradation of the element, and even when the applied voltage was higher than the threshold voltage, it showed an impedance value such as applied voltage equal to or less than the threshold voltage. As a result, it can be learned that the change in the impedance with elapsed time reflects the characteristics due to the degradation of the OLED and can predict the characteristics and lifetime of the OLED.

  • Optical and electrical properties of various transparent conducting oxides (ITO, AZO, ITO/Ag/ITO, AZO/Ag/AZO) were investigated for anode of OLED display. ITO/Ag/ITO multi-layer anode has much better electrical and optical characteristics than other films, and OLED on that anode showed lower threshold voltage and better luminescence.

Our presentation includes both the developments taking place in materials and the rapid advances in the manufacturing processes used for solution processable P OLEDs. On the manufacturing side, the latest progress in ink jet printing process is discussed. On the materials side, we look at both fluorescent and phosphorescent material performance including the CDT development roadmap.

The use of a gradient refractive index anode shows promise for contrast improvements in OLEDs.   • The development of highly efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials is an active area of recent research in organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) since the first report by Chihaya Adachi in 2011. Traditional fluorescent materials can harvest only singlet excitons, leading to the theoretically highest external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5% with considering about 20% light out-coupling efficiency in the device. On the other hand, TADF materials can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons through reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from triplet to singlet excited states. It could provide 100% internal quantum efficiencies (IQE), resulting in comparable high EQE to traditional rare-metal complexes (phosphorescent materials). Thanks to a lot of efforts in this field, many highly efficient TADF materials have been developed. This review focused on recent molecular design concept and optoelectronic properties of TADF materials for high efficiency and long lifetime OLED application.
