  • The surfaces of $SiO_2$ films were treated by PMMA diluted solutions, and analyzed the chemical shift from Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. The $SiO_2$ film treated by PMMA diluted solution changed the properties of the surface, and showed the blue and red shift according to the concentration of PMMA. The C-H bond elongation effect due to the high electro-negative atom chlorine showed the red shift, and makes the final material with the cross-link structure. The leakage current was efficiently reduced at the sample No 7 with the red shift, witch depends on the electron deficient group.

  • The self supported film specimen of Wyoming montmorillonite as a layer silicate saturated by cations,$Li^{+},\;Na^{+},\;K^{+},\;Ca^{2+},\;Ni^{2+},\;Al^{3+}$and$F^{3+}$ were allowed to contact acetone, methyl-ethyl ketone and diethyl ketone within the heatable gas cell. The i.r. spectra between $4000{\sim}1200cm^{-1}$ at different pressures of adsorbates indicated bond formation through carbonyl oxygen. Two types of carbonyl bond shift with maxima at $1713cm^{-1}$ and $1690cm^{-1}$ are attributed as coordinate bond formation of carbonyl with either surface hydroxyl or cationic hydroxyl group. The intensity of the vOH was analyzed and resonance form of cationic hydroxyl was proposed as an adsorption site. The tendency to form coordinate bond was in good agreement with calculated formal charge of carbonyl oxygen in an increasing order, acetone < methyl-ethyl ketone < diethyl ketone. As an additional mechanism of adsorption, weak hydrogen bonding of methyl hydrogen with surface oxygen was observed.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different bases of ceramic brackets on shear bond strength and to observe failure patterns of bracket bondings. Lower bicuspid brackets whose bases designed for the macromechanical and silane treated chemical bonding those for silane treated chemical bonding, those for micromechanical bonding, and those for macromechanical bonding were tested as experimental groups, and foil mesh-backed metal brackets as a control group. All the brackets were bonded with $Mono-Lok\;2^{(TM)}$ on the labial surface of extracted human lower bicuspids after etching the enamel with $38\%$ phosphoric acid solution for 60 seconds. The shear bond strengths were measured on the universal test machine after 24 hours passed in the $37^{\circ}C$ water bath. The gathered data were evaluated and tested by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, and those results were as follows. The shear bond strengths of brackets for macromechanical and chemical bonding, those for chemical bonding, and those for micromechanical bonding were not different (p>0.05), but showed statistically higher than those of metal bracket and those of ceramic bracket for micromechanical bonding(p<0.05). The shear bond strengths of ceramic bracket for micromechanical bonding showed statistically lower than those of metal bracket(p<0.05). The enamel fractures and/or ceramic bracket fractures were observed in the cases of higher bond strength than that of metal bracket. These results supported that silane treated base of ceramic bracket show higher shear bond strength than that of metal bracket, and suggested that micromechanical form of ceramic bracket bases show higher shear bond strength than that of macromechanical form.

The buccal coronal unground enamel from human extracted molars were prepared using low-speed diamond saw. Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (group SM). Clearfil SE Bond (group SE), or Adper Prompt L-Pop (group LP) were applied to the prepared teeth. and the blocks of resin composite (Filtek Z250) were built up incrementally. Resin tag formation was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. after removal of enamel surface by acid dissolution and dehydration. For microtensile bond strength test. resin-bonded teeth were sectioned to give a bonded surface area of $1\textrm{mm}^2$. Microtensile bond strength test was perfomed. The results of this study were as follows. 1. A definite etching pattern was observed in Scotchbond Multi-Purpose group. 2. Self-etching groups were characterized as shallow and irregular etching patterns. 3. The results (mean) of microtensile bond strength were SM: 26.55 MPa, SE: 18.15 MPa, LP: 15.57 MPa. SM had significantly higher microtensile bond strength than 8E and PL (p < 0.05). but there was no significant differance between SE and PL.

  • Rate constants and activation parameters for the methanolysis of t-butyl halide (t-BuCl, t-BuBr, t-BuI) in various MeOH-DMSO mixtures were measured by conductometric method. Taft's solvatochromic parameters, such as polarity-polarizability(SPP's), ${\pi}^{\ast}$, hydrogen bond donor (HBD) acidity, ${\alpha}$, and hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) basicity, ${\beta}$ of the solvents, were determined by the so called solvatochromic method using five indicators. The variation of methanolysis rate with the solvent composition was discussed on the basis of the activation parameters and the correlation of the rates with the solvatochromic parameters. It is concluded that the polarity-polarizability, HBD acidity and HBA basicity of the mixtures had an effect on the ionization of t-butyl halide cooperatively, also that the specific interaction between the leaving groups and the solvents, such as ion-dipole and hydrogen bond acceptor-donor interaction, is the most important factor of solvent effects on the stabilization of transition states.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the shear bond strengths of orthodontic bracket with Conventional primer (CP), Moisture insensitive primer (MIP), and Self-etching primer (SEP). In addition, the effect and the timing of saliva contamination on shear bond strength was evaluated. A total of 135 bovine mandibular incisors were used in the study and divided into 3 groups. Group I, II and III were used CP, MIP, SEP, respectively. Each group was then divided into three subgroups: the group without saliva contamination, the group with primer application after saliva contamination, and the group with saliva contamination after primer application. After the primer application, the metal bracket for the lower incisor was attached and the shear bond strength was measured. The mean shear bond strengths was highest with CP and lowest with SEP in dry condition. However, CP showed a significant decrease in shear bond strength in the presence of saliva contamination. MIP and SEP showed no significant decrease in shear bond strength with saliva contamination.

  • PVC powder was dehydrochlorinated by hydrothermal reaction at reaction time 0∼5 hr, reaction temperature $200∼250^{\circ}C$ in 0∼2M NaOH solution, and shape and structure of the PVC residue was investigated. The shape of the residue was changed largely according to NaOH concentration. Most of the residue was cohered in the aqueous solution, and many pores less than 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were formed on the surface. Dense network structure was well developed inside the residue. On the other hand, the residue in the NaOH solution was not cohered and its shape is roughly spherical. In the IR spectrum of the residue both in water and NaOH solution at $250^{\circ}C$, aromatic rings and absorption peak by C=C double bond were observed. From the results, it was observed that aromatic circle reaction and bridge reaction occured inter and intra molecules.
