This paper presents the effect of acid treatment on the removal of metals and the brightness of pulp. The bleached kraft pulps, metal-absorbed pulps and recycled pulps((ONP, OCC, MOW, and SC) were treated with the acidic solutions. Among metals in the bleached kraft pulps, Cu, Ca and Mg were removed easily by the acid washing, whereas Fe, Al and Si were not removed. The acid washing also removed distinctly metals from the metal-absorbed pulps. The metals absorbed in pulps reduced the brightness (%, ISO). Especially, Fe was the most detrimental metal. However, the brightness which was decreased by metals was restored to the status quo by the acid washing. The level of metals in recycled pulps was gradually reduced after the first flotation and acid treatment. Hence, the degree of metal removal by the acid washing was mainly dependent upon the kinds of waste pulps and metal ions.
This study was attempted to individualize upper and lower incisor position appropriate to individual characteristic dento-facial pattern. Lateral cephalometric radiographs of 75 Korean adults with normal occlusion and good facial profile whose ages were over 17 years were traced, digitized, and statistically analysed. The results of this study were as follows; 1. All cephalometric measurements of incise. position and dento-facial pattern for normal occlusion showed wide range of variation. 2. There were no significant differences of incisor position between males and females. 3. Lower incisor position was highly correlated with ANB, N-A-Pog and SN/Mand. pl. angle and upper incisor position, with ANB, N-A-Pog and SN/Occ. pl. angle. 4. Multiple regression equations were established to individualize incisor position appropriate to individual characteristic dento-facial pattern. ANB and N-A-Pog angle were selected as the significant guiding variables affecting upper and lower incisor position. 5. Lower incisor position such as $\bar{1}$ to SN, $\bar{1}$ to occlusal plane and $\bar{1}$ to NPog(mm) and upper incisor position such as $\underline{1}$ to SN, $\underline{1}$ to palatal plane, $\underline{1}$ to NA, $\underline{1}$ to NA (mm) and $\underline{1}$ to NPog(mm) could highly predicted from the variables of dento-facial pattern.
For alleviating the low spectrum efficiency problem of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), due to the strong inter-cell-interference (ICI) at cell's edge, we introduce comb-spectrum code division multiple access (CS-CDMA) into broadband OFDM system at downlink channel for enabling the use of entire spectrum for seamless coverage. In addition, we develop a new method, called orthogonal cell code (OCC) scheme, to assist CS-CDMA for nullifying the ICI from contiguous cells. In system operation, each of the conventional cells is divided into an outer cell and an inner cell, and a mobile station (MS) should access to the CS-CDMA when it is in the outer cell and access to OFDM when it is in the inner cell. This study investigates the spectrum efficiency of using CS-CDMA and makes a comparison with that of long term evolution (LTE) in the following cases; (1) under an assumption of perfect channel state information and (2) based on channel estimates at a MS station. The results show the great advantage of utilizing the proposed system.
Fracture toughness was considered as one of the good estimates of the paper break tendency of paper web in the press room. Paper break on the paper machine is caused by many factors such as paper machine irregular vibrations, impurities in the fiber furnish, shives, and so on. On the paper machine, the solid content of paper web is changing very rapidly from less than 1% to over 95%. We tried to measure the fracture toughness of paper web at different solid contents for providing the fundamental knowledge of paper break. Stretches of wet web were also measured and compared to the fracture toughness changes. Four different fiber furnishes (SwBKP, HwBKP, ONP, and OCC) were refined to different degrees, and at different solid contents (40%, 60%, 80% and 95%), their fracture toughnesses were measured. Two fracture toughness measurement methods (essential work of fracture and Tryding's load-widening method) were used, and we found they gave identical results. The stretch curves of the wet webs against the axis of solid contents were very similar to the fracture toughness curves of those.
The energy efficiency of papermaking process becomes more significant because of various new regulation of the energy consumption and the green house gas emission. In this study, the effects of wood powder addition on the drainage and the drying efficiency of the OCC based paper products, linerboard, were deeply investigated for improving energy efficiency. The fractionation of wood powder depending on the size were conducted. The bigger size of wood powder resulted in the higher bulk and the higher drainage efficiency, but the lower paper strength. The drying efficiency were in detail evaluated depending on the drying process level. In the first section of drying process until the 80% solid level, there were no significant changes in the drying efficiency by the addition of wood powder. However, after the 80 % solid level, the drying efficiency was greatly improved by the addition of wood powder. Those results showed the addition of wood powder could greatly affect not only the drainage in forming and wet pressing but also the drying process.
For the manufacture of linerboard with 100% KOCC, we tried to increase the solid content of wet web by employing GCC (grounded calcium carbonate) in the fiber furnish to save drying energy. Three different diameters of GCC, namely, 5, 10, and $35{\mu}m$, were used. To complement the strength loss by the addition of GCC, cationic starch and refining treatment were tried. It was found that the addition of $10-35{\mu}m$ dia. GCC to KOCC for $180g/m^2$ basis weight sheets increased the solid content of the furnish about 1-1.5% with better bulk and drainage properties. The loss of strength properties were compensated by the application of cationic starch and/or refining process to the KOCC furnish. The dia. of GCC of $35{\mu}m$ was, however, too large to make smooth surface of the sample sheet. So, the optimization process was required before implementing the results to the mill by selecting proper diameter and shape of the calcium carbonate.
Wet compaction test (WCT) is a fiber evaluation method where wet fibers are compressed at one side of a cylinder and water drains out from the other side. The consistency of the fiber furnishes and their pressures are recorded during the test. In the previous study we found that WCT results always gave better coefficients of determination in fiber furnish drainage, and paper properties (density, tensile, tear, and burst strength) than those of WRV (water retention value). Fiber freeness and fiber length correlated well with drainage and tear strength of the furnishes, respectively; however, their correlations were very much improved by combining the WCT results. In this study, we used the WCT test for fractionated fiber furnishes to see whether improvement of the WCT is possible. We found that strength properties such as breaking length and burst index were correlated better with the fractionated long fiber furnishes. Drainage was greatly affected by the presence of short fiber furnishes. We used bleached chemical pulps (SwBKP, HwBKP), recycled pulp (OCC), and mechanical pulp (BCTMP) as fiber furnishes in this study. Fiber fractionation can be performed on-line in these days by using multifractor and WCT can be used as an on-line test in papermachine in the future.

The building sector has seen a huge increase in the use of lightweight concrete recently, which might result in saving in both cost and time. As a result, the study has been done on various types of concrete, including lightweight (LC), heavyweight (HC), and ordinary concrete (OC), to understand how they react to earthquake loads. The comparisons between their responses have also been taken into account in order to acquire the optimal reaction for various materials in building work. The findings demonstrate that LWC building models are more earthquake-resistant than the other varieties due to the reduction in building weight which can be a curial factor in the resistance of earthquake forces. Another crucial factor that was taken into study is the combination of various types of concrete [HC, LC, and OC] in the structural components. On the other hand, the bending moments and shear forces of LC had reduced to 17% and 19%, respectively, when compared to OC. Otherwise, the bending moment and shear force demand responses in the HC model reach their maximum values by more than 34% compared to the reference model OC. In addition, the results show that the LCC-OCR (light concrete column and ordinary concrete roof) and OCC-LCR (ordinary concrete for the column and light concrete for the roof) models' responses have fewer values than the other types.
