Development of Verification and Interface Application for Interactive Data Broadcasting Middleware (양방향 데이터 방송 미들웨어를 위한 검증 및 정합 애플리케이션 개발)

  • In this paper, we design and implement verification and interface application for interactive data broadcasting middleware. This application implements ACAP and OCAP verification item according to their types (format, protocol. resource, presentation). Therefore, using this application, we can verify whether digital settop-boxes used in digital terrestrial television and digital cable television conforms to the ACAP and OCAP standards. In this paper, we evaluate our proposed application using TVPLUSiTM verifier which can verify interactive TV application in real broadcasting environment. Through performance evaluation, we show that the DTB-H650F set-top-box supports OCAP and ACAP standard 80% and 95%, respectively.

Design and Implementation of Data Broadcasting Authoring Tool for Multi-platforms (데이터방송 표준간 호환 가능한 저작도구 설계 및 구현)

  • There are several data broadcasting standards that the developers should apply when develops any interactive digital TV contents. In Korea, we adopts ACAP(Advanced Common Application Platform) as terrestrial data broadcasting standard, MHP(Multimedia Home Platform) fur satellite data broadcasting and OCAP(OpenCable Application Platform) for cable data broadcasting. Therefore, content providers must develop different applications which suited for different standards - even if the application is exactly same. This is waste of time and energy. This paper suggests a solution to solve this problem among different broadcasting platforms - MHP, OCAP and ACAP. We compared these specifications, and found out what APIs are typically used far applications. Then we designed XML file structures that can be used to define contents of applications. We also implemented an authoring tool which automatically generates XML files by interaction with users. This paper also ascertains Xlet applications, produced by the authoring tool, works properly on each different data broadcasting standard - MHP, OCAP and ACAP.

  • 방송에서의 광고의 비중이 높아짐에 따라 광고 수익을 극대화하기 위한 기술의 발전이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 최근의 이러한 광고 관련 기술들을 일반적으로 Advanced Advertising 이라고 하며 그 중 시청자의 선호에 맞는 광고만을 시청자에게 제공하는 타깃광고(Targeted Advertising) 방식 등 수신기별로 특화된 광고를 제공하는 기술을 클라이언트 기반 광고 삽입 방식이라고 한다. 북미의 인터랙티브 케이블방송 규격인 OCAP(OpenCable Application Platform)은 OCAP DPI(Digital Program Insertion) 라는 명칭의 클라이언트 기반 광고 삽입 방식에 대한 북미 일부 지역에서의 시험 방송의 성공한 후 관련 규격을 OCAP1.1-I01 에 발표하기에 이르렀다. 조만간 상용화되면 OCAP DPI 를 통해 북미 케이블방송 사업자들의 광고 수익 향상에 기여할 것은 물론이고 시청자들의 만족도를 향상시킬 것이다. 이런 움직임은 케이블 진영뿐만 아니라 Open IPTV Forum, ATSC 등 IPTV 나 지상파 TV 진영에서도 이 기술에 대한 타당성 검증 및 표준화가 논의가 활발히 진행되고 있는 실정이다. 본 논문은 클라이언트 기반 광고 삽입 기술에 대해 OCAP DPI 를 구현한 경험을 바탕으로 그 원리 및 동작을 설명하고, DVR(Digital Video Recorder) 또는 PVR(Personal Video Recorder)의 주요 기능인 스토리지에 방송스트림을 저장하고 재생하는 기능을 이용하는 광고 삽입 방법에 대해 제안하며, Cable-IPTV Hybrid 의 웹 접근성을 이용하여 웹 서버에 저장되어 관리 및 운용되는 광고컨텐츠의 스트리밍을 통한 광고 삽입 방법에 대한 제안하고, 마지막으로 실제 이러한 광고 삽입 기술을 적용하는 데에 있어 발생되는 문제점들을 언급하고 그 해결에 대한 의견을 제시한다.

매체별 디지털 데이터방송 규격 비교 -지상파, 위성, 케이블 중심으로-

  • 디지털 경제에서는 세계표준을 따르는 것이 선택이 아니라, 필수적인 것이다. 따라서 디지털 방송표준또한 필연적으로 준수되어져야 하는 규격인 것이다. 최근 방송환경이 매체별(지상파, 위성, 케이블)로 디지털방송으로 전환 중이거나 전환을 완료하여 서비스중에있다. 데이터방송 또한 매체별로 실험서비스 혹은 본방송이 진행중이다. 데이터방송은 디지털 방송에 양방향 서비스를 가늠하게 하는 개념으로서 국내의 지상파 데이터방송 표준 규격이 ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee)-DASE (DTV Application Software Environment), 위성의 경우 DVB MHP (Digital Video Broadcasting - Multimedia Home Platform), 케이블은 OpenCable-OCAP(OpenCable Common Application Platform)으로 결정되었다. 이와 같이 국내에서 채택하고있는 데이터방송 규격은 매체별로 서로다른 규격을 따르고있으며 규격 표준화 진행은 완료되었거나 진행중에 있다. 따라서 본 고에서는 지상파, 위성, 케이블 데이터방송 표준동향과 매체별 데이터방송 표준 규격에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.

  • In current digital broadcasting systems, GEM(Globally Executable MHP)-based middlewares such as MHP(Multimedia Home Platform), OCAP(OpenCable Application Platform), ACAP(Advanced Common Application Platform) are the norm. Despite much of the common characteristics shared, such as MPEG-2 and DSM-CC(Digital Storage Media-Command and Control) protocols, the information and data structures they need are slightly different, which results in incompatibility issues. In this paper, in line with an effort to develop an integrated DTV middleware, we propose a general-purpose, reconfigurable DSM-CC architecture for supporting various standard GEM-based middlewares without code modifications. First, we identify DSM-CC components that are common and thus can be shared by all GEM-based middlewares. Next, the system is provided with middleware-specific information and data structures in the form of XML. Since the XML information can be parsed dynamically at run time, it can be interchanged either statically or dynamically for a specific target middleware. As for the performance issues, the response time and usage frequency of DSM-CC module highly contribute to the performance of STB(Set-Top-Box). In this paper, we also propose an efficient application cache management strategy and evaluate its performance. The performance result has shown that the cache strategy reflecting user preferences greatly helps to reduce response time for executing application.

A Research on the Regulations and Perception of Interactive Game in Data Broadcasting: Special Emphasis on the TV-Betting Game (데이터방송 인터랙티브 게임 규제 및 이용자 인식에 관한 연구: 승부게임을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the regulatory issues and introduction problems of TV-betting data broadcasts in Korea by in-depth interview with a panel group. TV-betting data broadcast services of card games and horse racing games are widely in use in Europe and other parts of the world. In order to carry out the study, a demo program of TV-betting data broadcast in the OCAP(OpenCableTM Application Platform Specification) system environment, which is the data broadcasting standard for digital cable broadcasts in Korea was exposed to the panel group and then they were interviewed after watching and using the program. The results could be summarized as below. First of all, while TV-betting data broadcasts have many elements of entertainment, the respondents thought that it would be difficult to introduce TV-betting in data broadcasts as in overseas countries largely due to social factors. In addition, in order to introduce TV-betting data broadcasts, they suggested that excessive speculativeness must be suppressed through a series of regulatory system devices, such as by guaranteeing credibility of the media based on safe security systems for transactions, scheduling programs with effective time constraints to prevent the games from running too frequently, limiting the betting values, and by prohibiting access to games through set-top boxes of other data broadcast subscribers. The general consensus was that TV-betting could be considered for gradual introduction within the governmental laws and regulations that would minimize its ill effects. Therefore, the government should formulate long-term regulations and policies for data broadcasts. Once the groundwork is laid for safe introduction of TV-betting on data broadcasts within the boundary of laws and regulations, interactive TV games are expected to be introduced in Korea not only for added functionality of entertainment but also for far-ranging development of data broadcast and new media industries.
