  • In this study, we measured the effects of UV protection efficiency of the polarity of oil, the type of emulsion, the viscosity of product, the type of thickener and light stabilizer in sunscreen. As a result, even higher polarity of the oil, UV protection efficiency is measured high (Butyloctyl salicylate: SPF 44.10, PA 7.93). In case of low, it was measured low conversely (Dimethicone: SPF 16.40, PA 5.57). In case of emulsion types, UV protection efficiency of W/O emulsion which organic sunscreen agent is based in the outer phase is measured higher than O/W emulsion. According to increasing of viscosity, UV protection efficiency tends to increase proportionally. However, the size of emulsion particles and the kinds of thickener has no effect to UV protection efficiency. Also light stabilizer was found to be an important factor affecting the UV protection efficiency. As a result, it is able to improve UV protection efficiency and it has potential which improve the economical effect of the sunscreen without increasing sunscreen agents.

  • Spherical fine powders of tungsten oxide powders were prepared by the emulsion evaporation method. The characteristics of the powders prepared were examined by means of TGA, X-ray diffraction, SEM and image analysis. The emulsions were prepared by fast mixing of aqueous phase containing tugsten and the organic phase which composed of kerosene, surfactant, and paraffin oil. Precursors were made by evaporating the emulsionin the kerosene bath at $160^{\circ}C$, and then calcined at $650^{\circ}C$ in order to produce tungsten oxide powders. The average particle size of the tungsten oxide powders was $0.5\mutextrm{m}$ and their shapes were spherical at the both case of w/o and o/w type emulsions. As the HLB value of the surfactant increased and the concentration of tungsten ions decreased the mean particle siqe of tungsten oxide powders decreased whereas agglomerationsize increased. The optimum concentration of Span 80 was 8 percent by volume, and the optimum stirring speed in the emulsion formation was 5000 rpm in order to obtain fine and well dispersed $WO_3$ powders.

  • The antioxidative activities of the water solution of crude extract from edible mushroom enokitake Flammulina velutipes were compared with those of ascorbic acid and ascorbic acid 6-palmitate in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions of cod liver oil. Oxidation of the emulsions was carried out at 40 and $50^{\circ}C$ in the dark. The antioxidant activities were measured by in vitro assay against oxygen uptake, 2-thiobarbituric acid value, hydroperoxide formation of the oils. Also, residual docosahexaenoic acid content was measured as indices of lipid oxidation. The cod liver oil in O/W emulsions with added enokitake crude extract (ECE) was significantly more stable against lipid oxidation than the control emulsions without the extract in terms of any oxidation indices used. Moreover, ECE provided remarkable antioxidative properties to eicosapentaenoic acid ethyl ester in emulsion system. These observations demonstrate that F. velutipes can be used as a natural antioxidant, which effectively prevents oxidation of polyunsaturated oils in emulsion system.

  • Oil-in-water(o/w) nanoemulsions were prepared in the system of water/Span 80-Tween 80/long-chain paraffin oil via PIC method. With the increase of preparation temperature from 30 oC to 80 oC, the diameter of emulsion droplets decreased from 150 nm to 40 nm. By varying the HLB of mixed surfactants, we found that there was an optimum HLB around 13.0~14.0 corresponding to the minimum droplet size. The size of emulsion droplets increased upon increasing the ratio of oil/emulsifying agent. At $f{\leq}0.15$, the size of nanoemulsions could be kept constant more than 2 months. The increase in preparation temperature makes it possible for producing monodisperse nanoemulsions. Once the nanoemulsion is produced, the stability against Ostwald ripening is outstanding due to the extremely low solubility of the liquid paraffin oil in the continuous phase.

  • Biodegradable poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone)(PCL) microcapsules containing pseudomonas were prepared by W/O/W emulsion system. The characteristics and release behaviors of the microcapsules were investigated as a function of manufacturing conditions. The morphology and particle distribution of the microcapsules were observed by a scanning electron microscope and a particle size analyzer. The release behaviors of the pseudomonas were determined using a cell culture method. It was found that smooth and spherical microcapsules were formed by W/O/W emulsion system and particle size was in the range of 10 to 60 ${\mu}m$. The release behaviors of the pseudomonas were influenced by the manufacturing conditions. It was indicated that the increase of the surfactant content and stirring rate led to an increased release rate, resulting from the high specific surface area of the smaller particle size, and the increase of the PCL content provided the sustained release behaviors by the delay effect of diffusion in the release medium.

  • Water-in-Oil (W/O) emulsions are widely used in cosmetics. However, O/W (Oil-in-Water) emulsions are generally superior to W/O emulsions in terms of stability. In this study, we investigated the changes of viscosity, the size of emulsion droplets, and rheological properties of emulsions prepared using distearyldimonium chloride (DDC), magnesium aluminum silicate (MAS) and quaternium-18 hectorite (QH). In addition to the changes of the composition, we tested the condition of homogenization including rotation per minute of the mixer and the mixing time. The viscosity of emulsions with DDC and AMS were not changed with time and the stability of emulsions was stable during the storage time. However, the fluidity of emulsions were low due to the forming gel network in the emulsions. The gelling power of the emulsions with QH was rather weaker than that of the emulsions with DDC and MAS. The viscosity of emulsions with QH was gradually reduced and the phase separation of emulsions with high concentration of oil was observed throughout the storage time, however, the stability of emulsions with DDC, MAS and QH was excellent, the fluidity of emulsions was enhanced, and the viscosity of emulsions was sustained for a long time after setting of emulsions.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the possibility of solid particles as a stabilizing agent instead of surfactant for preparing emulsions in the cosmetics. The type of emulsions stabilized by solid particles was dependent on wettability of the particles for water and oil. The optimal conditions of emulsions stabilized by solid particles were determined with ratio of water and oil phase, polarity of oils and amount of stabilizers. In the foundation appling the optimal condition of emulsions stabilized by solid particles without surfactant, the stable emulsion type foundation was successfully prepared. As a result, this work indicates that emulsions stabilized by solid particles can be applied to make-up cosmetics.

  • Treatment of O/W Emulsion is very important to develop 15ppm Bilge Separator for new IMO regulation It is too difficult to demulsify the emulsion in the bilge waste water, so we use chemical treatment to break emulsion stability. Broken oil particle is treated by flotation 15ppm Bilge Separator on the Ship doesn't have enough time to treat Bilge waste water because of limited space in the ship. For the solution to this problem, we experiment to find primary factors as coagulant, pH, amount of inputting coagulant, and type of flotation. On the basis of test results, we decided primary factors.

  • $Al_2O_3$-20w/o $ZrO_2$ composite powders were prepared by the emulsion-coprecipitation method and the effects of preparative conditions on powder characteristics were investigated. In the preparation of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ composite powders, toluene was used instead of kerosene as the oil phase in emulsions. After coprecipitation, the emulsion was easily broken into a single liquid phase by adding methanol, and then precipitates could be effectively collected by filteration. The fact that all $ZrO_2$ phases present at room temperature in composite powders calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ after washed by methanol had a tetragonal structure confirmed that methanol-washing enhanced the dispersibility of fine $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3$ matrix. $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ composite powders were spherical particles of 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter. Pellets sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs showed the relative theoretical density of 97.3% and the fracture toughness of 5.01MN/$m^{3/2}$.
