The nutritional value and yield of mushrooms depend on the substrate on which it is grown. This study sought to biofortify Pleurotus floridanus with calcium supplements and assess its effect on the yield and calcium levels. The experiment was set up in a 2 × 5 factorial and replicated thrice in a completely randomized design. Two calcium supplements, OML and OMW, were added to two growth media. The examination of total dry weight yield showed that calcium supplements OML and OMW in the sawdust medium containing wheatbran in the ratio 1:10 had a mean value of 4.37 g, which was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than that in the control (1.29 g). However, in the sawdust-only medium, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the application of treatments. No significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed between the calcium types in both growth media. The mineral analysis showed that calcium levels were increased in harvested mushrooms with the addition of calcium OML and OMW to the growth media.
The content of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium of hulled barley grown on farmer's field with various N.P.K rates were investigated at various growth stages. Correlation analyses between N.P.K contents and yield and use efficiency of N.P.K and other results were as follows. 1. According to concentration and its change at various growth stages N is similar to K and P, Ca, Mg are similar each other. 2. Yield showed significant positive correlation in most fields with nitrogen content just after thawing. However P and N content were more significantly correlated with yield just before freezing in Kangwon and Chungnam (northern and central province). At the other growth stages negative correlation trend was shown between yield and P, especially K. 3. N.P.K contents in plant increased with the increase of fertilizer rate clearly in early growth stage, and especially in nitrogen, indicating that N was relatively short than P and K in the later stage. N and K contents at various fertilizer rates also indicated a probable competition between them. 4. Fertilizer recovery (use efficiency) decreased in the order of N (55)>K (27)>P (12%) and that of N tended to increase with yield increase. 5. Most effective growth stage for nutritional diagnosis in relation to yield appears to be just after thawing or just before freezing. Nutritional criteria for N.P.K at various growth stages were proposed.

The edible paddy straw mushroom Volvariella volvacea (Bull. ex F.) Singer has high nutritional and medicinal values. They are grown on a wide variety of agricultural by-products using different several methods. The result of this present study showed that type of bed and cultivation condition (outdoor/indoor) had effects on the yield of paddy straw mushrooms grown on the spent oyster mushroom sawdust. The treatment of circular compact bed under indoor cultivation condition (CYIC) had the best yield and biological efficiency (B.E.) with 2,119.2 g/bed and 14.5%, respectively, followed by the treatment of conventional bed under outdoor cultivation condition (COOC) with the yield and B.E. of 1,935.5 g/bed and 13.2%, respectively, but the lowest yield and B.E. were observed in the treatment of conventional bed under indoor cultivation condition (COIC) with 1,226.1 g/bed and 8.4%, respectively. Paddy straw mushrooms cultivated on spent oyster mushroom sawdust should be proper in both outdoor and indoor conditions by conventional and circular compact methods as well. However, in indoor conditions, paddy straw mushrooms should be grown in a circular compact bed to ensure the temperature of the bed is suitable for the mushroom growth.
The aim of the present investigation is to determine the nutritional composition of various insects and their potential uses as alternative protein sources in animal diets. The feeding industry requires production systems that use accessible resources, such as feed resources, and concentrates on the potential impacts on production yield and nutritional quality. Invertebrate insects, such as black soldier flies, grasshoppers, mealworms, housefly larvae, and crickets, have been used as human food and as feed for nonruminants and aqua culture while for ruminants their use has been limited. Insects can be mass-produced, participating in a circular economy that minimizes or eliminates food- and feed-waste through bioconversion. Although the model for formula-scale production of insects as feed for domestic animals has been explored for a number of years, significant production and transformation to being a conventional protein resource remains to be deeply investigated. This review will focus on the nutritional composition of various insects and their potential use as alternative protein sources, as well as their potential use to promote and support sustainable animal production. Furthermore, nutritional compositions, such as high protein, lauric acid omega 6, and omega 3, and bioactive compounds, such as chitin, are of great potential use for animal feeding.
Optimum stand density of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) varies with locations and climates. Stand density is one of the factors that determines herbage yield, forage quality and persistence of alfalfa. As establishment costs increase, the question arises whether present population densities are optimum for obtaining maximum herbage yield and forage quality. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the optimum plant density for highest herbage yield and forage quality for the dehydrated alfalfa industry under Edmontons climatic conditions in Alberta, Canada; 2) to compare herbage yield and forage quality of the cultivars 'Algonquin' and 'Vernal' grown at a range of stand densities. Alfalfa seedlings of both cultivars were either transplanted at spacings of 6, 10, 15 and 25 cm or direct seeded at the 4.5 cm plant spacings, providing population densities of 494, 278, 100, 45 and $16plants/m^2$. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with a split-plot arrangement having three replicates; the main plots consisted of two alfalfa cultivars Algonquin and Vernal, and the sub-plots were the five population densities. The cultivar Vernal had significantly higher annual yield than did the cultivar Algonquin. There was no significant effect of plant density on herbage yield. There was no difference in crude protein (CP) between the two cultivars. At the first cut, there was a significant quadratic effect of plant density on CP content and the greatest CP occurred at the 100 plants/m2 density. Crude protein was not affected by plant density at the second cut. Acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were not affected by plant density. The cultivar Algonquin usually had a lower ADF and NDF than cultivar Vernal. In conclusion, high population densities ($278plants/m^2$ or more) of alfalfa did not improve herbage yield and forage quality compared with low plant population densities ($100plants/m^2$ or less) of alfalfa.

This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics, yield and chemical compositions of corn hybrids for silage according to ridging times in the paddy field cultivation. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with five treatments and three replication. The ridging times of five treatments were untreated (C), 7 leaves (T1: 31 days), 8 leaves (T2: 37 days), 9 leaves (T3: 42 days) and 10 leaves stage (T4: 48 days after sowing) of silage corn. The ridging treatments (T1, T2, T3, T4) were higher (p<0.01) dry matter yield and TDN yield than the unridging treatment (C). However, there were no significant differences among T1, T2, T3 and T4 treatments. The Crude protein content of unridging treatment was decreased (p<0.01), while NDF content was increased (p<0.01) compared to ridging treatments. The contents of mineral and amino acid in ridging treatments were higher than unridging treatment (p<0.05, p<0.01). In particular, mineral and amino acid contents were the highest in T4 and T1, respectively (p<0.01). Based on the above results, ridging work is to be increased the yield quantity and nutritional value of silage corn. And the best result was obtained in T4 treatment of ridging treatments.
This study was conducted to investigate the possibility that oil seed rape could be used as a forage fodder crop and to select the most suitable variety of forage rape at the southern area of Korea, Two varieties of oil seed rape currently grown for oil production and six introduced varieties of forage rape with relatively high yield and high nutritional value were grown at the same condition and their nutritional value were observed in Spring. Generally, rape was considered as a useful forage fodder crop with high content of crude protein and low contents of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. Differences in mean values of the above characters between two groups of rape were not statistically significant. Velox showed significantly higher content of crude protein and significantly lower contents of NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin compared with other varieties of forage rape in spring. Rape was relatively high in IVDMD compared with other forage fodder crops, and forage rape was more or less in IVDMD and DDMW than oil seed rape. Velox was the highest in IVDMD and DDMW among the varieties of forage rape in Spring, in this experiment.

Mushroom is very important to rural dwellers due to the various economic, health and nutritional benefits that can be derived from its consumption, sales and utilization. Hence, this experiment was carried out with a view to evaluating the influence of locally available substrate i.e., sawdust of different wood species on the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom). Pleurotus ostreatus was grown on sawdust (indigenous and exotic species) using two pretreatment methods, which included hot water treatment to remove (a water-soluble extract) and non-extracted sawdusts (substrate). The result of this study showed that there was a significant difference in the effect of different wood species selected. Parkia biglobosa produced a better yield (71.06 g), followed by Anogeissus leiocarpus (53.17 g) and Gmelina arborea (51.39 g) in a non-treated unextracted states. In the treated samples, Parkia biglobosa has the highest yield (50.61 g) followed by Anogeissus leiocarpus (49.28 g) and Gmelina arborea (45.00 g). Thus, Parkia biglobosa and Anogeissus leiocarpus produced a higher yield of mushroom either in a treated or non-treated state and they could be recommended for growing oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus).

This experiment was canied out to determine the effects of seeding method and seeding ratio in mixed cropping of forage rye and red clover on dry matter yield, nutritional yield and chemical characteristics of soil. The main treatment was two seeding methods(drilling and broadcasting) and the sub treatment was six seeding ratios between rye and red clover(T1; 150kg : 0 kg/ha, T2; 120 : 3, T3; 90 : 6, T4; 60 : 9, T5; 30 : 12, T6; 0 : 15). The experiment was performed at the College of Natural Science of Kon-Kuk University in Chungju in 1992. The results were summarized as follows; 1. Protein content was increased by increasing the seeding ratio of red clover, but content of NDF and ADF were decreased. 2. The seeding method did not affects significantly the dry matter yield, but broadcasting showed higher dry matter yield than drilling in the same seeding ratio. Especially, T3 of broadcasting was the highest yield of 13, 172 kg/ha The T3 of broadcasting and T4 of drilling showed hlghly crude protein yield of 1, 268 kgha and 1, 252 kg/ha, respectively. 3. Comparing the each seeding ratio of two seeding method, total nitrogen yield of shoot and root of drilling were higher than broadcasting. Especially, T2 and T4 of drilling were the highest in total nitrogen yield. 4. There were more increase in organic matter and nitrogen contents but decrease in K, Ca of soil by increasing the seeding ratio of red clover than soil before experiment. In the seeding methods, broadcasting was an effect of soil improvement.

This study was performed out to investigate the influence of the mixed application of chemical fertilizer (CF) and liquid swine manure (LSM) on the growth characteristics, dry matter yield, amino acids, minerals, and free sugars in cultivating silage corn on paddy soils. The field experiment was designed in a randomized block design of 3 repetitions with CF 100% treatment (C), CF 70% + LSM 30% treatment (T1), CF 50% + LSM 50% treatment (T2), CF 30% + LSM 70% treatment (T3), and LSM 100% treatment (T4). At this time, the application of LSM was based solely on the nitrogen. Ear length, ear circle, stem diameter, and stem hardness of the silage corn did not show significant differences between treatments. Fresh yield, dry matter yield and TDN yield were highest in T3, whereas the lowest in C treatment (p<0.05). Crude protein, crude fat, and crude ash content were significantly higher in T1, C, and T4 treatment, respectively (p<0.05). However, NDF, ADF and crude fiber content did not show significant difference between treatments. The total mineral content decreased significantly (p<0.05) as the LSM application rate increased. Total composition amino acid content was higher in the order of T1 > T2 > C > T4 > T3 treatment (p<0.05). Free sugar content was higher in the order of T1 > T3 > T4 > T2 > C treatment (p<0.05). Based on the above results, suggests that the mixed application of chemical fertilizer 30~50% and LSM 50~70% (T2 and T3) is the most effective, considering the yield performance and the content of sugar degree and free sugar affecting silage.
