Influence of Mentha×piperita L. (Peppermint) Supplementation on Nutrient Digestibility and Energy Metabolism in Lactating Dairy Cows

  • The characteristic smell of cow milk was suppressed when herbs were consumed by lactating dairy cows. But it is unclear whether or not peppermint ingestion affects the nutritional and milk production parameters in lactating dairy cows. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of peppermint feeding to lactating dairy cows on nutrient digestibility, energy metabolism, ruminal fermentation and milk production. Eight Holstein cows were given a diet supplemented with or without 5% of dried peppermint per diet on a dry matter basis. The digestion of nutrients from cows fed the diet with peppermint was significantly lower than that of the control group. Energy loss as methane and methane released from cows receiving the peppermint treatment was significantly lower than that in the control cows. Peppermint feeding to cows resulted in the promotion of thermogenesis. However, ruminal fermentation and milk production were not affected by peppermint feeding. In conclusion, peppermint ingestion by lactating dairy cows reduces the nutrient digestibility and methanogenesis, and changes energy metabolism.

Characteristics and Nutritional Status of Elders Who Under-report Intake on 24 Hour Recalls in USA

  • The objectives of this study were to determine whether older Americans would provide valid energy intake information using a 24-hr recall method and to determine which characteristics were predictive of under-report of energy intake. We conducted 24-hour recalls on 83 male and 105 female community-dwelling older adults(66-87y) in the USA to assess energy(EI) and nutrient intakes. Basal metabolic rate(BMR) was calculated from age-and gender-specific equations of Schofield. Under-reporting was defined a priori as EI : BMR<0.9. Subjects volunteered demographic information, underwent depression and cognition exams, and completed a Level II Nutrition Risk Screen. Differences between under- and adequate-reporters were assessed using t-tests for characteristics and macro-nutrient profile. Stepwise regression analyses were used to predict under-reporting status. Under-reporting of EI occurred in 34% of the sample. Neither geriatric depression scale(GDS) score, nor self-reported weight loss were related to under-reporting. On average, under-reporters had higher body mass indices. The most significant variables for the main effect to predict the ratio of energy intake to estimated basal metabolic rate(EI : BMRest) were BMI and age. Using a standard cut-off of 76% of the recommended dietary allowances for Americans, under-reporters were consistently more likely to be classified as having inadequate nutrient, as well as energy, intakes. Effects of yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) supplementation on growth performance, fecal score, and nutrient digestibility of weaning pigs

  • Weaning pigs often face post-weaning challenges such as diarrhea, low feed intake, and body weight (BW) loss which affects the health and economic value of weaning pigs. Interestingly, the use of yeast cultures (YCs) as feed supplements for pigs has increased markedly in recent years. This study evaluated the effects of yeast cultures (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on the growth performance, fecal score, and nutrient digestibility of weaning pigs. A total of 50 crossed healthy weaning pigs [(Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace) ${\times}$ Duroc] with an average BW of $7.46{\pm}1.60kg$ (28 day of age) were used in a 6-week experiment. The experiment was divided into 3 phases (Phase 1, 1 - 2 weeks; Phase 2, 2 - 4 weeks; Phase 3, 4 - 6 weeks). Dietary treatments were as follows: 1) CON: basal diet and 2) CON + 0.50% YC. During phase 1, the average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the weaning pigs fed YC supplementation diets compared with the weaning pigs fed the CON diet. During phase 3 as well as overall, the gain/feed ratio (G/F) was significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the YC supplementation group compared with the pigs fed the CON diet. In conclusion, the supplementation of YCs in the diet positively affected the growth performance of weaning pigs during the first two weeks after weaning.

경사도와 축분 부산물비료 시용에 따른 고랭지 밭의 양분 유실량 (Assessment of Nutrient Losses in Different Slope Highland Soils Amended with Livestock Manure Compost)

  • 축분 부산물비료에 대한 양분 유출과 유출량 산정을 통하여 축분 부산물비료별 양분유실량을 구명하고 농업환경부하 평가에 기초자료로 제시하고자 경사도에 따른 축분 부산물비료 별 양분유출 시험을 수행하였다. 유실된 토양에서의 T-N 함량은 축분 부산물비료 간에 의한 유출의 차이보다 경사도 (%)에 따른 T-N 유출의 차이가 더욱 큰 것으로 조사되었다. 경사도 5%에서 T-N 유출은 NPK + 계분부산물비료 처리구에서 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며 경사도 20%와 35%의 경우에도 같은 경향을 나타냈다. 축분 부산물비료에 의한 유출의 차이보다 경사도 (%)에 따른 T-N 유출의 차이가 더욱 큰 것으로 조사되었다. 경사도 5%에서 평균 T-N 유출은 8.37, 경사도 20%와 35%에서는 각각 57.41과 $71.50kg\;ha^{-1}$의 T-N 유출을 나타냈으며 경사도 5%와 20, 35% 간에는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 경사도 20%와 35% 간에는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았으나 경사도 (%)에 따라 정의 상관관계를 나타내고 있다. 유효인산 및 치환성 양이온 (Ca, Mg, K, Na)도 경사도에 따라 통계적으로 매우 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 경사도 20% 에서 유거수량에 의한 T-N과 T-P의 유출은 화학비료 (NPK) + 계분 부산물비료가 가장 높았으며 화학비료 (NPK)처리구 가 가장 적은 값을 나타냈다. 경사도 5%에서의 평균 T-N 유출은 11.1, 경사도 20%와 35%에서의 T-N 유출은 29.2, $41.7kg\;ha^{-1}$로 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 경사도 20%에서의 배추의 T-N 함량은 돈분 부산물비료와 계분 부산물비료가 화학비료 (NPK) 처리구와 화학비료 (NPK) + 계분 부산물비료처리구에 비해 유의성 있게 낮게 나타났는데 이는 토양유실로 인한 T-N 유출이 돈분 부산물비료와 계분 부산물비료에서는 높게 나타난 것이 하나의 원인이 될 수 있다고 판단된다.

Effect of Cutting Height on the Feed Value and Drying Rate of Rye (Secale cereale L.) Hay

  • Hay-making is one of the most common forage preservation practices in livestock operations. The objective of hay-making is to minimize nutrient loss by shortening field drying time. Measuring the impacts of cutting height of forage crop is necessary to optimize hay production balancing yield and quality, in order to obtain substantial biomass increase through harvest of regrowth. This experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of cutting height of rye (Secale cereale L.) on drying rate and hay quality. Heading stage rye was harvested at 8cm or 15cm stubble heights. Hay was daily tedded at 09:00 and sampled at 09:00, 13:00 and 17:00 to determine moisture content (MC). After two month of preservation, CP (crude protein), ADF (acid detergent fiber), NDF (neutral detergent fiber), IVDMD (in vitro dry matter disappearance), TDN (total digestible nutrient), RFV (relative feed value), DM (dry matter) loss, visual scores and total fungi count were determined for estimation of hay quality. Cutting height at 15cm could enhance the drying rate and CP content (p<0.05), but also increases DM loss (p<0.05) compared to cutting at 8cm. Cutting heights did not affect ADF, NDF, IVDMD, TDN and RFV value (p>0.05). Visual scores of rye hays cutting at 8cm and 15cm, ranged from 83 to 85. Cutting at 8cm tended to maintain higher core bale temperature and fungal count than cutting at 15cm during preservation, but there was no significant difference.

식피에 따른 토양과 무기양분의 유실 (The Soil and Mineral Nutrient Erosion on the Floors of Vegetations)

  • This report was investigated on the soil and mineral nutrient erosions in comparison among the vegetation floors of M isranthus sisensis, Arternisia stelleriana, Rhododendron mucronula turn, Zoysia ja-ponira and Pinus deusitlora communities and the naked soil on Mt. Keum-hak in Cheolwon-Koon, The erosion of clay, silt, fine sand and coarse sand of the surface soils under the Z. japonira grass-land was far less then those of M. sinensis, A. stelleriana, R. murronulatum and P. densiflora com-munities and the naked soil, The loss of mineral nutrients due to the soil erosion was the lowest level in the Z. japonira grassland and the highest level in the P. densiflora forest and the naked soil, respectively.

  • In this study, as MBBR(Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) process using waste tire media is suggested for retrofitting with advanced wastewater treatment and the removal property of organic matter and nutrient and the capacity of media are evaluated through long-term operation with pilot plant following seasons, the application capacity of retrofitting with MBBR process to a existing wastewater treatment is studied. As a result of the long-term operation of the process, it is proved that there is no loss and abrasion of media, and also that it is possible to secure the sufficient attached bio-mass. The values of organic matter and nutrient in effluent are suitable for the strict discharged water quality standards in every season including winter.

과체중 및 비만여성의 생식섭취가 체중감소 및 생화학적 영양상태에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Uncooked Powdered Food on the weight toss and the Biochemical Nutritional Status in Overweight and Obese Women)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of an uncooked powdered food(UPF) on the weight loss and changes of the biochemical nutritional status for 20 overweight and 26 obese women in Iksan area. We just replaced common breakfast and dinner of the subjects with UPF. Their dietary intake status was evaluated by 24-hour recall method. Also anthropometric and biochemical measurements before and after the UPF program were estimated. The intake of energy, lipid and protein decreased and the quality of meals improved as people started to take UPF. Due to the energy loss by taking UPF, weight and body fat decreased significantly. The percentage of the body fat was high among the weight lost, from which we judged that the process of losing weight was successful. It is hard to predict whether weight loss will occur to people who are already in shape or not, but if overweight and obesity people regularly take UPF instead of other food products, we assume that UPF will help lessening the body fat. The most positive change among biochemical changes by taking UPF was the decrease of serum lipid contents. When overweight and obesity women replaced two out of three meals with UPF for 3 month period, no significant nutritional problems occurred. It seems that the 12weeks of UPF program used in this study was effective in improving anthropometric indices without producing the deficiency of iron or other susceptible nutrients.

유기물원이 다른 퇴비연용 밭토양에서 양분유실량 변화 (Change of Nutrition Loss of Long-term Application with Different Organic Material Sources in Upland Soil)

  • 본 연구는 퇴비연용 밭토양에서 유거 및 침투수에 의한 양분유실과 양분가용화정도를 구명하기 위하여 양토와 사양토를 공시하여 계분퇴비, 우분퇴비 분뇨잔사 및 식품오니퇴비등 4종을 사용하였다. 퇴비 시용량은 0, 40, $80Mg\;ha^{-1}$수준으로 처리하여 1994년부터 1997년도까지 4년간 시험한 주요 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 퇴비종류별 양분가용회량을 조사하기 위하여 퇴비 4년연용한 토양을 배양시험한 결과 토양pH는 계분 및 우분퇴비연용은 에서 pH 6.1~6.8로 높아 졌고, 분뇨잔사시용은 pH 4.5~4.7로 무시용과 비슷하였다. 토양 EC는 배양초기에 가장 높은 후 급격히 떨어지다가 2주후부터는 일정수준을 유지하였고, 질소 무기화율은 $25^{\circ}C$조건에서 사양토는 39~76%였고 식양토는 16~48%였다. 퇴비연용토양에서 토양표면 양분 유실량은 퇴비시용량이 중가될수록 음이온이 양이온보다, 나지가 옥수수나 콩재배보다 많았다. 양이온 유실정도는 $K^+$ > $Ca^{2+}$ > $Na^+$ > $Mg^{2+}$ > $NH_4{^+}$순이었고, 음이은은 $SO_4{^{2-}}$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $PO_4{^{3-}}$ 순으로 많았다. 토성별 음, 양이온 지하용탈량은 사양토가 양토보다 1.7배정도 많았으며, $NO_3-N$는 퇴비 시용초기에 용탈량이 많았다. 퇴비종류별 용털량을 사양토조건의 분뇨잔사 시용구에서 제일 많게 유실되었으며, 옥수수재배는 무재배보다 58~82% 유실량이 감소되었다.

한국여성의 연령별 골밀도와 그에 미치는 영향인자에 관한 연구(I) 골밀도와 영양소 섭취 및 에너지 소비량의 관계 -대구지역을 중심으로- (The Effect of Nutrient Intake and Energy Expenditure on Bone Mineral density of Korean Women in Taegu)

  • The purpose of present study was to assess the change of bone mineral density (BMD) by age and the dietary factors influcencing on BMD in Korean women in Taegu. The subjects were 242 healthy female in the range of 7-67 years old, and were divided into 4 age groups. BMD of lumbar of lumbar spine, femur(neck, ward's triangle, trochanter)and total body was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptionmetry. The nutrient intake measured by convenient method was similar to or more than the level of RDA. The significant relationship between nutrient intake and BMD was observed. Particularly for lumbar spine and total body in group 4 (50-60yr), such as energy, carbohyrate, protein, fat, Ca, animal Ca, meat Ca, Fe, thiamin and niacin were found significantly positive correlations. By analysis of multiple regression, significant relationships were shown between protein and lumbar spine and total body BMD in group 4, between ascorbic acid and total body BMD in group 2(17-34 yr). Energy expenditure showed better corrlations with BMD rather than nutrient intake. BMD was significantly greater in subjects consuming a mean dietary Ca intake more than 125% of RDA compared with less than 75% of RDA. In high Ca intake group ($\geq$125% of RDA), there were the significantly negative correlations between animal (meat) Ca and BMD in each bone of 7-9 years. The excessive intake of animal protein in this age group was found. And the correlations between BMD and past milk consumptin were significant in all skeletal sites of group 1(7-16 yr). This study confirms that the most effective way of preventing osteoporosis and the fractures is to maximize peak bone mass in early life and to minimize bone loss through the balanced adequate intake of Ca and other nutrients and regular physical activity.
