This study was designed to compare the incidence and severity of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) between normal (N = 85) and overweight or obese (N = 28) college female students and investigated correlation between PMS, nutrient intake, hematological index and psychological index (depression, anxiety, stress). Each subject was asked a Menstrual Discomfort Questionnaire (MDQ) for PMS by 5 Likert scale. The PMS scores of women in the normal weight subjects ranked in order of severity were water retention (2.71), followed by behavioral change (2.58), negative affect (2.46), pain (2.31), autonomic reaction (2.27), decreased concentration (2.16). The symptoms of 'pain' and 'behavioral change' of overweight or obese subject were significantly higher than those of normal subject (p < 0.05). And total cholesterol concentration of overweight or obese subjects was significantly higher than in normal subject (p < 0.05). There was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the symptoms of 'negative effect' and BMI. And the triglyceride concentration was positively related with 'water retention (p < 0.01)'. The symptoms of 'decreased concentration' were negatively correlated with calcium (p < 0.01) and vitamin B6 intake (p < 0.05). The depression score were positively related with symptoms of 'behavioral change (p < 0.05)', 'negative affect' (p < 0.01), and the anxiety score was positively correlated with 'behavioral change (p < 0.05)' and 'decreased concentration (p < 0.05)'. The stress score was positively correlated with 'decreased concentration (p < 0.01)', 'behavioral change (p < 0.05)' and 'negative affect (p < 0.05)'. This suggests that PMS represents the clinical manifestation of a calcium, vitamin $B_6$ deficiency and psychological disorder. Therefore we concluded that nutrient supplementation, depression and stress management may help to relieve PMS symptoms.
The flag and lower leaves (4th or 5th) of rice plant from the field of NPK simple trial and from three low productive area were analyzed in order to find out certain diagnostic criteria of nutritional status at harvest. 1. Nutrient contents in the leaves from no fertilizer, minus nutrient and fertilizer plots revealed each criterion for induced deficiency (severe deficient case induced by other nutrients), deficiency (below the critical concentration), insufficiency (hidden hunger region), sufficiency (luxuary consumption stage) and excess (harmful or toxic level). 2. Nitrogen contents for the above five status was less than 1.0%, 1.0 to 1.2, 1.2 to 1.6, 1.6 to 1.9 and greater than 1.9, respectively. 3. It was less than 0.3%, 0.3 to 0.4, 0.4 to 0.55 and greater than 0.55 for phosphorus $(P_2O_5)$ but excess level was not clear. 4. It was below 0.5%, 0.5 to 0.9, 0.9 to 1.2, 1.2 to 1.4 and above 1.4 for potassium. 5. It was below 4%, 4 to 6, 6 to 11 and above 11 for silicate $(SiO_2)$ and no excess was appeared. 6. Potassium in flag leaf seemed to crow out nitrogen to ear resulting better growth of ear by the inhibition of overgrowth of flag leaf. 7. Phosphorus accelerated the transport of Mg, Si, Mn and K in this order from lower leaf to flag, and retarded that of Ca and N in this order at flowering while potassium accelerated in the order of Mn, and Ca, and retarded in the order of Mg, Si, P and N at milky stage. 8. Transport acceleration index (TAI) expressed as (F_2L_1-F_1L_2)\;100/F_1L_1$ where F and L stand for other nutrient cotents in flag and lower leaf and subscripts indicate the rate of a nutrient applied, appears to be suitable for the effect of the nutrient on the translocation of others. 9. The content of silicate $(SiO_2)$ in the flag was lower than that of lower leaf in the early season cultivation indicating hinderance in translocation or absorption. It was reverse in the normal season cultivation. 10. The infection rate of Helminthosporium frequently occurred in the potassium deficient field seemed to be related more to silicate and nitrogen content than potassium in the flag leaf. 11. Deficiency of a nutrient occured simultaniously with deficiency of a few other ones. 12. Nutritional disorder under the field condition seems mainly to be attributed to macronutrients and the role of micronutrient appears to be none or secondary.
The purpose of this study was to assess risk factors associated with food insecurity in the Korean elderly aged over 65 years using data from the Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 (KNHANES VI). A total of 1,200 subjects were analyzed among the participants of the KNHANES 2013 by using SPSS statistics complex samples (ver. 21.0). Food insecurity was measured by using the modified US Household Food Security/Hunger Survey Module. Thirteen percent of subjects lived in food insecure households. There were differences in the prevalence of food insecurity according to sex, educational level, income level, and household structure. Mean age of the food insecurity group was significantly higher than that of the food security group. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that food insecurity was significantly associated with alcohol intake (OR: 1.82), prevalence of melancholy (OR: 2.07) and suicidal thoughts (OR: 2.67), and intake deficiency of energy (OR: 1.60), calcium (OR: 1.97), iron (OR: 1.97), potassium (OR: 1.96), riboflavin (OR: 1.76), and niacin (OR: 1.64), while not with smoking, physical activity, chronic diseases including obesity, anemia, diabetes, and osteoarthritis, and deficiency of protein, vitamin A, thiamin and vitamin C. These findings suggest that food insecurity is strongly related to mental health and certain nutrient intakes. Prospective research is needed to establish the effects of food insecurity on chronic diseases.

It has been suggested that people who suffer from impaired masticatory function may adapt food consistency to their oral status (which may lead to deficient nutrient intake) or rely on the digestive system to compensate for the lack of oral preparation of food (which may increase the likelihood of digestive diseases and decrease gut absorption). Masticatory deficiency thus may be detrimental to health. This article reviews evidence of the effects of masticatory deficiency on nutrition. The selection of relevant literature was based on Medline queries using the following key words: mastication, nutrition, digestion, diet, and disease risk. Earlier work not listed in Medline but related to the subject also was reviewed. Only publications available in English were selected for inclusion. It is difficult to draw conclusions from many of the reviewed studies due to issues related to study design, confounding variables, and the subjective nature of the measurements. In particular, data supporting a link between masticatory function and deficient dietary intake often are based on relatively weak correlations and cannot confer a causal relationship.
The production of poly-$\beta$-hydroxybutyrate(PHB) from methanol by batch and fed-batch cultivations of Methylobacterium sp. GL-10 was studied. PHB accumulation was stimulated by the nutrients deficiency including, NH4+, SO42-, and K+. The nitrogen deficiency was the most critical factor for PHB accumulation. In batch cultivation, the maximum cell concentration and PHB content were 1.86g/l and 0.62g/l, respectively, with 1.0%(v/v) of methanol and 0.5g/1 of ammonium sulfate. The mass doubling time of Methylobacterum sp. GL-10 was in the range of 4-5 hrs. The cell growth and PHB accumulation were severely inhibited at the methanol concentration over than 2% (v/v). To overcome methanol Inhibition, constant feeding and intermittent feedillg fed-batch cultivations were adopted, using C/N molar ratio as a control factor. In constant feeding fed-batch process, cell concentration was increased up to 2.67g/1, and PHB yield was enhanced from 0.33 of batch culture to 0.53. The relatively low cell concentration was caused by methanol accumulated in culture broth at late growth phase. To prevent methanol accumulation and to maximize PHB production, DO-state intermittent fed-batch cultivation was attempted. The cell and PHB concentration was reached up to 4.55g/1 and 1.80g/1, respectively. It was possible to maintain methanol concentration low and also to feed nutrient of desired C/N molar ratio.
A survey was performed to 238 male young men who were living alone (104 persons) or living with roommates (134 persons). Their average age was 22.6 years old, height 171.8cm, and weight 65.6kg. Their daily calcium intake level was averaged 271.9 $\pm$ 169.1mg, which was 38.8% of Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDA). Comparing calcium intake of each mealtime, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks were composed of 18.6%, 30.0%, 34.0% and 17.4%, respectively. Their daily iron intake level was averaged 8.9 $\pm$ 10.8mg, which was 74.3% of Korean RDA. Comparing iron intake of each mealtime, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks were composed of 15.4%, 33.6%, 36.3% and 14.7%, respectively. Deficiency of these minerals in young male adults were severe and the nutrient qualities were also poor and the deficiency was more profound in calcium than in iron. And we observed iron nutrition differed significantly according to their living status, such as iron intake and its %RDA were significantly worse in single living subjects than the other. However calcium did not show significant difference. It was found mineral intake, especially iron, could be improved in young men living with roommates than living alone and regular breakfast could improve calcium and iron intakes. Corn (Zea may, L.) was grown alternatively in nutrient solution and hydroxy Al or Al-citrate solution to identify the form of Al which induces Al toxicity on Corn seedlings. Corn seedlings exposed to hydroxy Al solution was very toxic but Al-citrate solution did not show any toxic symptoms. At pH 7 with Al-citrate solution, severe Fe, deficiency was induced probably by the decrease of stability constant of Al-and Fe-oganic complexes and subsequent precipitation of Al-and Fe-as a hydroxide form. Addition of humic acid ameliorated the Al toxicity somewhat at pH 4.7 with hydroxy-Al solution but at pH 7 it induced more severe Fe deficiency.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the riboflavin status of primary school children. Fiftyone subjects were selected as obese group and fiftyfive subjects were selected as control group according to Body Mass Index(BMI) of fifth-graders at a primary school in Taegu. For each subject information on nutrient intake and daily activity pattern were obtained by questionnaire. The riboflavin status was evaluated by urinary riboflavin exvretion The daily energy expenditure per kilogram of body weight was significantly lower in obese group(=47kcal/day) than in control group(=58kcal/day) (p<0.001) However the entire energy consumption was siginificantly greater in the obese children(=2005kcal/day) than their nono-baser peers(=1837kcal/day)(p<0.001). Riboflavin intake was 0.67mg/100kcal in the control group and 0.61mg/1000kcal in the obese group. Thus intakes for both groups met the current group and control group were 86.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/day and 98.7$\mu\textrm{g}$/day. repectively. There was no significnat Assesment of clinical signs of riboflavin deficiency indicated that angular lesion was 4.7% and glossitis was 6.6% of all subjects. Thirty one percent of subjects excrete riboflavin below 78$\mu\textrm{g}$/g creatinine which is defined as deficient. Therefore this group would be considered at high risk for developing riboflavin deficiency. From this study current recommendation of 0.6mg/1000kcal of riboflavin intake may not be adequate during growth and associated stress.
Purpose: The consistent rise in the number of foreign students in Korea demands an accurate and detailed investigation into their dietary practices and nutritional status. For these international students, assimilation into new cultures can be stressful. The influence this process may have on dietary behaviors as well as overall health cannot be overlooked. Methods: The researchers in this study sought to investigate the nutritional status and dietary practices of Ghanaian students studying in Korea. A total of 81 Ghanaian male students with an average age of $29.4{\pm}4.0years$ were sampled between May and June 2016. Investigations were carried out on the general characteristics of the participants, their daily food and nutrient intakes using a 24-h dietary recall method, meal skipping practices, and the nutritional quality of their diets based on their meal skipping habits. Results: The study revealed that the daily nutrient intake of subjects did not fully meet the daily recommended nutrient intake (RNI) established by Ghanaian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), particularly for energy, calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamin B2 requirements. The Nutrient Adequacy Ratio (NAR) for calcium was very low, posing a deficiency risk to the participants. Meal skipping practices among participants changed significantly after arriving in Korea. The study also compared the diet quality indicators (Nutrient Adequacy Ratio and Mean Adequacy Ratio) of those who skipped meals ${\geq}7times/week$ with those who skipped meals < 7 times/week. Participants who skipped meals ${\geq}7times/week$ were shown to have lower dietary intakes of vitamins B1 and B2 than those who skipped meals < 7 times/week. Conclusion: Ultimately, the study found that meal skipping among Ghanaian students was common, and their daily nutrient intakes did not meet the set dietary standards. Those who skipped meals ${\geq}7times/week$ had lower dietary intakes of vitamins B1 and B2 than those who skipped meals < 7 times/week. Based on our study findings, we recommend that nutrition education should be organized for the Ghanaian student community in Korea using our results as a template to draw up a nutrition program that is culturally appropriate.
The influence of deficient(7${\mu}M$) and suffcient(1000${\mu}M$) magnesium(Mg) supply on the content of mg, chlorophyll, protein and the activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD), scavengers of superoxide radical($O_2$), and ascorbate peroxidase(AP), $H_2O_2$scavenging enzyme, and glutathione redutase(GR) were studied in pumpkin(Cudurbita moscata $D_{UCHESNE}$) plants over a 11-day period. Over the 11 days Period of growth in nutrient solution with sufficient and deficient Mg supply, the contents of Mg, chlorophyll protein and the activities of the antioxidative enzymes remained more or less constant in Mg-sufficient leaves. In Mg-deficient leaves, the contents of Mg, chlorophyll and protein was seriously decreased with time, however the activities of SOD, AP and GR highly enhanced compared to those of Mg-sufficient. The results indicated the stimulative effect of Mg deficiency on toxic oxygen species and scavenging enzymes in plants.
