  • The purpose of this study is to obtain an improved interpretation of heat transfer phenomena between blocks and fluids in the parallel conducting plates. Flow is two-dimensional, incompressible steady laminar flow over rectangular blocks, representing finite heat source on parallel plate. Heat transfer phenomena, temperature of blocks and heat transfer into the flow field are investigated for different spacings between blocks and Reynolds numbers. Results indicate that Nusselt number on the far upstream corner of the block was higher than that of any part of the block. As Reynolds number and spacings of blocks increased, Nusselt number increased. The distribution of local Nusselt number on the top surface of the conducting plate is similar to the case with insulated plate. Temperature of the block which has heat source in half cubage was approximately twice as high as temperature of the block which has heat source in whole cubage. As Reynolds number and spacings of blocks increased, overall temperature decreased. The peak value of block temperature occurred at position shifted to the right or upper right from center. The maximum temperature of block can be expressed as a function of Reynolds number, spacings between blocks, position of maximum temperature of each block and then it is possible to predict the maximum temperature of blocks.

  • The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the local heat transfer characteristics in the upward free water jet impinged on a downward flat plate of uniform heat flux. The inner shape of rectangular nozzle used was sine curve type and its contraction ratio of inlet to outlet area was five. Experimental parameters considered were Reynolds number, nozzle exit-flat plate distance, and level of supplementary water. Local Nusselt number was influenced by Reynolds number, Prandtl number, supplementary water level, and distance between the nozzle exit and flat plate. Within the impingement region, the Nusselt number has a maximum value on the nozzle center axis and decreases monotonically outward from center. Outside of the impingement region, on the other hand, the Nusselt number has a secondary peak near the position where the distance from nozzle center reaches four times the nozzle width. However if nozzle exit velocity exceeds 6.2 m/s, the secondary peak appears also in the impingement region. The empirical equation for the stagnation heat transfer is a function of Prandtl, Reynolds, and axial distance from the nozzle exit. The optimum level of supplementary water to augment the heat transfer rate at stagnation point was found to be twice the nozzle width.

  • Non-gray radiation with convection in the entrance region of a smooth tube is numerically investigated. The fluid is a mixture of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen to simulate combustion products of propane. The flow is assumed to be laminar and hydrodynamically and thermally developing. The P-1 approximation is used to simplify the radiative transfer equation and the exponential wide band model is adapted to model the spectral absorption coefficients of non-gray gas mixture. The bulk mean temperature and Nusselt number variation along the tube axis are shown for several inlet and wall temperature pairs to show the effect of temperature on the heat transfer characteristics. Nusselt numbers for simultaneously developing flow are compared to those for thermally developing flow. In addition, the effect of the mole fraction of the non-gray gases on convective and radiative Nusselt numbers is investigated.

  • Heat Transfer with periodic fluctuation of fluid temperature caused by oscillatory flow or compression expansion can be out of phase with balk fluid-wall temperature difference. Newton's law of convection is inadequate to describe this phenomenon. In order to solve this problem the concept of the complex Nusselt number has been introduced by severla researchers. The complex Nusselt number expresses out of phase excellently while the first harmonic is dominant in the variations of both fluid-wall temperature difference and heat flux. However, in the case of oscillatory flow with non-linear wall temperature distribution, the complex Nusselt number is not appropriate to predict the heat transfer phenomena since the higher order harmonic components appear in periodic temperature variation. Analytic solutions to the heat transfer with an sinusoidal well temperature distribution were obtained to investagate the effect of non-linear wall temperature distribution. A new formula considering the thermal boundary layer was suggested based on the solutions. A comparison was also made with the complex Nusselt number. It was verified that the new formula describes well the heat transfer of oscillating flow even if the first harmonic component is not dominant in the fluid-wall temperature difference.

  • The effect of the thermal conductivity of a centered, square, heat-conducting body on natural convection In a square enclosure was examined numerically. Numerical simulations was carried out for Pr=0.17, $Ra=1.0{\times}10^4,\;1.0{\times}10^5,\;1.0{\times}10^6$, $K^*$=1.0, 6.6, 34.0 and t=0.5, 1.0, 2.0. The results were reported in terms of streamlines, isotherms, Nusselt number. As the results, the mean Nusselt number increases with the increasing of ${\zeta}$ at a constant Ra and $K^*$. In the case of ${\zeta}=1.0$(obstruction shape ratio), the mean Nusselt numbers were decreased as increasing of $K^*$(obstruction thermal conductivity ratio) with regardless of the Rayleigh number. When the constant obstruction size and thermal conductivity ratio, convective heat transfer effect was more enhanced at ${\zeta}=2.0$ than ${\zeta}=0.5$.

  • The effect of nozzle diameter on the local Nusselt number distributions has been investigated for an axisymmetric turbulent jet impinging on the flat plate surface. The flow at the nozzle exit has a fully developed velocity profile. A uniform heat flux boundary condition at the plate surface was created using gold film Intrex. Liquid Crystal was used to measure the plate surface temperature. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle to surface distance (L/d) from 2 to 14, and the nozzle diameter (d) from 1.36 to 3.40 cm. The results show that the Nusselt number at and near the stagnation point increase with an increasing value of the nozzle diameter.

  • The natural free convection in a vertical tube with uniform heat flux and temperature has been studied by the theoretical analysis is of governing equations and experimental measurements. In order to determine the Characteristics of Convective heat transfer in the tube, a dimensionless Rayleigh number is introduced. The relationship between Nusselt and Rayleigh number is compared with the numerical analysis of finite difference method and experiment. Nusselt number obtained from the experimental measurements are in a good agreement with the calculated values, and the relationship equations between Nusselt and Rayleigh number are obtained.

  • The present study numerically investigates two-dimensional flow and heat transfer in the multiple confined impinging slot jet. Numerical simulations are performed for the different Reynolds numbers(Re=100 and 200) in the range of nozzles from 1 to 9 and height ratios(H/D) from 2 to 5, where H/D is the ratio of the channel height to the slot width. The vector plots of velocity profile, stagnation and averaged Nusselt number distributions are presented in this paper. The dependency of thermal fields on the Reynolds number, nozzle number and height ratio can be clarified by observing the Nusselt number as heat transfer characteristic at the stagnation point and impingement surface. The Nusselt number at the stagnation point of the central slot shows unsteadiness at H/D=3 and Re=200. The value of Nusselt number at the stagnation point of the central slot decreases with higher Reynolds number and number of nozzle although overall area averaged Nusselt number increases. Hence careful selection of geometrical parameters and number of nozzle are necessary for optimization of the heat transfer performance of multiple slot impinging jet.
