For nursing as a science to establish a unique system of knowledge, nursing researches should include philosophical activities such as critique, analysis and synthesis. As a consequence of these activities, nursing science comes to add up more abundant content of knowledge and have a more refined scientific system. In short, nursing science can be developed in respects of tools and methods through philosophical researches, i.e., philosophy of nursing science. Traditionally, the task of supplying individual science with pertaining methodological principles has been due to philosophy, or philosophy of each Scientic discipline. Philosophy of nursing science establishes a demarcation between nursing and non-or pseudo-nursing, so that the unique natue of nursing can be revealed. Systematizing the particular knowledges or informations discovered through empirical reseal ches, philosophy of nursing science, as a part of rational activities to construct its scientific theories. Owing to philosophy of nursing science, conceptual frameworks or theories settled in various branches of nursing science can be integrated into a holistic system. Philosophy of nursing science can include arguments on standards, values, goals and intents of nursing behavior, so that their interrelational networks can be understood. Philosophical discussions can offer nursing science positive ways to more extensive development, preventing it from indulging in particular or exclusive inclination. And Philosophy of nursing science in itself should also keep a liberal attitude to overcome preconceptions concerning methodology of nursing science.
Over one million cases of the induced abortion have been conducted annually in Korea. Among those cases, most of all were illegally done, but this has not been addressed in the literature. While Korean Nurse Association Code of Ethics presents the respect for life as one of the basic ideology, it was not dealt enough in nursing education. The purposes of the study were to activate the debate on the issues related to an induced abortion ; to introduce the related ethical theories ; and to seek the solution of the ethical problems, which will eventually result in establishing the morality of nursing practice. The ethical theories of an induced abortion have traditionally addressed two extreme perspectives ; the conservatives who emphasize the sanctity of human life and the right of life that will never ethically allow the killing fetus ; and the liberalists who insist the right to choice for women to control their body. Since these extreme theories has not been helpful to solve the ethical problems, the recent trend is leading to the modified theories both from conservative and liberal perspectives. The examples of the theories are the potentiality of fetus(Singer, 1993), the obligation of women to serve their body to fetus(Held, 1987), the Replacement theory (Callahan, 1987), and the Principle of Caring (Gilligan, 1982). The study conducted the indepth interviews with 17 women who experienced the induced abortion and the 6 cases were selected to be analyzed. The cases were analyzed and interpreted by using an integrated case method which was combined of the New Casuisty(Jonsen & Toulmin, 1988 ; Jonsen, 1991) and the Specified Principlism (Richardson, 1990 ; Degrazia, 1992). The result of analysis revealed three types of ethical problems ; (1) the responsibility of taking care of the baby to be born (2) the fear for the condition of the fetus, and (3) the choice of induced abortion as the method of birth control. The findings also revealed the related ethical principles for various situations ; the principle of caring was used for choosing an induced abortion by the subjects ; the principles of the potentiality of fetus and the obligation of women to serve their body were for the consideration for the life of fetus ; and the principle of replacement was utilized for the right to choice for women. The ethical principles related to an induced abortion introduced in the study provided the way to solve the moral problems by applying to the clinical situations for nurses. The study also revealed the possibility of modifying the current ethical theories from the method of applying the principles to the various situation in the study. The modified theories would be more useful to guide the clinical practice with similar ethical problems.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to interpretate Caper's view of the aesthetical approach to nursing, to discover problems of her arguments, and to ultimately expand the horizon of the aesthetical thinking of nursing. Method: By means of the critical interpretation of Caper's paper, problems of her arguments were discovered. This then was suggested was the proper way of the aesthetical approach to nursing. Result: Caper's arguments of aesthetics were seen to be confused, regarding the pattern of the nursing art and the relationship between aesthetical knowing and practical art, and to have no the nursing's perspective as moral art. The proper paradigm for the distinct thinking of the nursing aesthetics could be offered here through applying some aesthetical theories as follows; a mode of aesthetical knowing could be characterized as emphatical awareness in relationship between nurse and client, and a practical art of nursing understood as moral art in sense of the expression of the human dignity. Conclusion: This study suggested fundamental theme for the proper aesthetical approach to nursing in view of the aesthetical knowing and the practical art. The horizon of the aesthetical thinking in nursing can be expended through the inquiry into aesthetical theories which offer theoretical the base for nursing as an art.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends of family nursing research in Korea. The subjects were 62 articles, 132 master theses and 20 doctoral theses published during the period between 1970-1997.7. The results are as follows. 1. The types of research that were analyzed were factor isolating. 34.1%, factor relating, 54.2%, situation relating. 6.1% and situation producing, 3.7%. 2. Research designs were experimental studies, 6. 1%, non-experimental studies, 89.7% and qualitative research, 4.2%. Survey research was the method used in 82.7% of the papers. 3. On the research subjects, 94 papers dealt with the family member of a patient or a single person, 59 papers dealt with a patient and 7 papers dealt with whole family. 4. On the places of studies, 64.0% of the studies were done in hospital rooms, 12.9% in the communities and community facilities. 12.0% in schools, 10.7% in the home, and 0.4% an occupational setting. 5. The most frequently used family concept in the title of the articles was "family support"(59 papers) followed by family function and family burden. 6. The most frequently used family assessment tool was Family Environment Scale(FES) developed by Moos & Insel. 7, According to family nursing domain described by Murphy' and Meister'study, the subdomain, relationship of the family and disease was found 83.2%. 8. Four papers built conceptual frameworks based on various theories of researchers. Eleven papers applied family theories and five papers applied nursing theories. Based on the above findings the following suggestions are made. 1. The various domains of family nursing research should be used including in the relationship of family and health, health policy and family. transcultural family research, and theoretical approach to family. 2. Qualitative research should be used for family nursing research. 3. Family assessment tools should be developed for the Korean family.

The purpose of this study was to analyze research trends and to suggest future directions for nursing research on the diabetes in Korea. The method was a review of 97 nursing research papers on diabetes published between 1981 and 2000. Analysis included year of publication, academic theses or not, research design, key words and the results. The results of the analysis can be summarized as follows : The number of the nursing research papers on diabetes has been increasing. Of those paper analyzed, it was found that 64 (65.97%) were master's theses, and 58 (59.79%) were descriptive or correlational studies. The most frequent key word was client behavior. Client behavior as the dependent variable was reported to be influenced by various causal variables but the results were not consistent. Nursing interventions reported as effective included education, exercise therapy, camps, and telephone coaching. Conclusion: We question whether the concepts, measurement scales, and theories used in these research papers were appropriate for Korean clients with diabetes. Development of concepts and theories for Korean clients is necessary.
This thesis explores the actual circumstances of Korean nursing by investigating its present situations. Ultimately, the intent of this study aims to establish a future direction of Korean Nursing. As such, the current conditions of Korean nursing is analyzed in the following categories: education, practice, research, nursing policy, expansion of nursing field, and entrepreneurship. In the final conclusion, an appropriate orientation of the future of Korean nursing is discussed. There are two primary Nursing programs, a three-year(63) and a four-year(53), in Korean Nursing education. Master's programs are available at 32 nursing schools or 32 professional graduate schools. A total of 15 nursing schools have a doctoral program in Korea. The ratio of graduates between the three-year and four year programs is 76:24. Hence, it is highly encouraged to expand four-year nursing programs, because it will help raise the social status of nursing professionals as well as the quality of nursing. In the clinical nursing field, independency and self regulation are critical. As such, organizational change, implementation of a standardized nursing m information system, appropriate workforce, and improvement of the reimbursement system in nursing is recommended. In community nursing, the following should be resolved to provide better nursing services: improvement of working condition and benefits, establishment of a law enforcing the hiring of nurses, and providing continuing education. The number of nursing research has increased and nursing studies are in great quantity. However, research in practices and theories are more in demanded. Hence, research that integrates theories and practices are very significant. Ultimately, it is critical to support nursing studies that will influence nursing policy. The Korean Nurses Association(KNA) is an organization that supervises the nation's nursing policy. The primary focus of KNA is to combine the three and four year undergraduate education systems into 4 years and to establish the Nursing Practice Act. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has adapted a system to educate and certify nurse specialists in 10 nursing areas in 21 nursing graduate schools expecting high-quality nursing services and a decrease of cost. The government also allowed nurses to operate facilities for health management or welfare agencies.

Purpose: Competency-based curriculum has attracted many nursing institutions' attention, pursuing the enhancement of competency and the quality of education. The goal of this study was to not merely scrutinize the nomenclature of competency and competency model as a concept of pedagogy as well as nursing science, but also form a well understanding of development process for nursing competency-based curriculum and nursing competency modeling. Methods: A comprehensive review on related literatures was conducted in each section of 1) competency-based curriculum, 2) competency and competency model, and 3) contents of competency. Results: The nomenclature of competency including nursing competencies, competency modeling and competency-based curriculum were clarified and summarized. Through analyzing and reviewing former studies related to competency, desirable nursing competency modeling and nursing competency-based curriculum were proposed and described. Conclusion: Learner-centered curriculum should be established based on nursing education that emphasizes intellectual skills acquisition and the enhancement of future-oriented professionalism. Competency modeling should reflect the fact that teaching-learning strategies should focus on the integration of nursing theories and clinical practices. Nursing competency modeling is essential in order to develop a genuine competency-based curriculum while in-depth practical research should be followed so that nursing theories and clinical practices work together in a coordinated fashion.
Practice evidenced by reliable knowledge is essential for professionals and practical studies. Because nursing is a human science and practical science, theory and knowledge development is an indispensable task to improve nursing. Nursing is a very special paradigm not exactly correlated to Western medicine and Oriental medicine. However, nursing was influenced by on Western medicine at the beginning, and most nursing theories were established western philosophies. Caring is the essence of nursing. To provide qualitative care which satisfies clients, it is required to respect cultures of the clients. Western and Eastern approaches of thinking are coexisting in Korea no, so the needs for developing a nursing model, East-West Nursing, which blends two approaches are increasing. In this paper, concepts of the East-West Nursing, differences between Oriental and Western medicines, and comparison of nursing metaparadigm in prospects from and Western Philosophies were briefly covered to define the East-West Nursing. Strategies and directions to develop the East-West Nursing were also discussed.
The purpose of this study was to describe decision making model of 180 public health nurses in Korea and their knowledge structure for decision making. The differences of decision making models by nurse's knowledge structure were also tested. Research concepts were measured using the instrument based on systemic and interpretive decision making approaches that were developed by Lauri & Salantera (1995). The results were as follows. 1. The public health nurses turned to, most commonly, a mixed practical-theoretical knowledge structure (45.9%), followed by practical knowledge (32%) and theoretical knowledge (22.1%). 2. The six different decision making models were identified. These were named for decision making theories and nursing process. These were client-oriented decision making, rule-oriented systemic decision making, wholistic and intuitive decision making, decision making depending on subjective view and experience, systemic decision making for defining problems. 3. The public nurses who had practical and practical-theoretical knowledge structure and community health practitioner (CHP) retold that decision making depends on subjective view and experience. Also the public health nurses who had 5~19 years clinical experience represented hypothetico-deductive decision making for defining problems.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the trend of nursing research by analyzing the doctoral dissertations in one college of nursing in Korea. Method: The areas of research, the methodological characteristics, and theories used in the research were explored in all doctoral dissertations (n=120) published from 1989 to 2006. Result: Mainly "Nursing" has been studied (44.9%) among four meta-paradigms of nursing science. The "client" domain (46.7%) and the "practice" domain (41.7%) were most frequently studied in type of nursing knowledge. The main purpose of the thesis was to develop nursing interventions and examine the effectiveness of the practice (40.8%) in quantitative research. Almost all (94.7%) of the qualitative dissertation studies were to explore phenomena in the nursing field. Almost half of the dissertations (43.9%) were an experimental design, 34.7% were a model construction, and 15.8% were a qualitative design. The majority of dissertations (83.3%) were to apply the specific theory and almost half (43.8%) studied borrowed theories from other fields. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop more rigorous and various research designs such a longitudinal design, or randomized controlled trial and this will lead to expanding the body of nursing knowledge.
