Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in Korean child-rearing practices between the generations of young mothers and grandmothers. Method: The participants were 98 mothers who were 20 to 39 years old and had raised one-year-old child and 103 grandmothers who were over 60 years old and had raised their children in a small city. Data were collected through self-report questionnaire based on the Korean traditional child-rearing practice from Yoo(1986). The data were analyzed using the SPSS Win 10.0 program. Results: Of 37 items in the categories of feeding and weaning, health management and taboo matters, play, and baby celebrations, the grandmothers practiced 13 items (35%) more frequently than the young mothers. However, no generation differences were found in 21 items (57%), and 3 items were practiced more frequently by the young mothers. For the young mothers, there were 15 items (41%) which were practiced over 70%, 7 items (19%) which were practiced less than 30%. Conclusion: It seems that some Korean traditional child-rearing practices were transferred to modern child-rearing practices. Therefore pediatric nurses need to pay attention to traditional child-rearing practices for the best health, growth and development of children.
Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the factors that influence eating behaviors in coronary artery disease patients and to create data for nursing which is thought to improve the eating behavior. Method: The study population was coronary artery disease patients who were treated on an outpatient basis. The measurements were eating behavior, diet self-efficacy, perceived-benefits, perceived-seriousness, family support and medical team support. All of the measurement tools above were thoroughly modified to verify validity and reliability. Statistical analysis was done by the SPSS PC 12.0 program. Results: The influencing factors for the eating behavior was diet self-efficacy (${\beta}=0.476$), social support (${\beta}=0.253$), chest pain (${\beta}=0.177$), smoking (${\beta}=-0.173$) and regular exercise (${\beta}=.169$), which explained 46.2%. Conclusion: Eating behaviors of coronary artery disease patients were influenced by diet self-efficacy, family support and the presence of chest pain. Therefore, the development of a program for efficient dietary education that prevents the progression of coronary artery disease is needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of education and practice of the maternal role and becoming a mother using the concepts of self-confidence in caring, maternal attachment, and maternal identity. Methods: A non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. Data was collected with the use of self-administered questionnaires from November 2007 to April, 2008. A total of 54 women at a Sanhujoriwon (postpartum care center) participated in the study. The experimental group consisted of 26 women (Nov-Dec), whereas the control group had 28 women (Feb-Apr). Education and practice on the maternal role was given individually and consisted of explanations, demonstrations and practice on breast feeding (day1 to 3), maternal attachment (day 8 to 9), bathing (day 10 to 11) and infant healthcare (day 13 to 14). The experimental group received education and practice on the maternal role while the control group received routine education only. Results: Data collection was done using pre and post questionnaires at admission and fourteen days later. The experimental group showed significant increases in self-confidence in caring (t=-3.31, p=.002) and maternal identity (t=-2.16, p=.036) compared to the control group. Conclusion: Education and practice on the maternal role and being a mother was an effective intervention in increasing self-confidence in caring and maternal identity.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the reason of interruption and the knowledge of breastfeeding. The samples of 117 mothers who have the babies between age from 1 month to 12 months were selected from one university hospital and one public health care center in J City. The data were collected with the questionnaire during the period from the January. 5. 2002 through January. 30. 2002. Analysis was done by using frequency. percentage. t-test. ANOVA. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The comparison of the method of feeding by general characteristics. income state(p= .019), rearing supporters(p=.026) and infant age(p=.03) have shown significant difference as the variables affecting breastfeeding practice rate. Breastfeeding rate were 24.8%. mixed- feeding type, 14.5%. milkfeeding type. 60.7%. 2. The major reason which breastfeeding be done was 'for health of baby'. In the period of breastfeeding, a large number of mothers answered' up to. 6 months'. The major reason of breasttfeeding interruption was 'insufficient quantity of breastmilk'. 3. The mean of knowledge on breastfeeding by feeding patterns were the highest in the breastfeeding group(F= 10.228, p= .000). 4. In a grade of each item on knowledge of breastfeeding, over 80% of mothers wrongly answered in two items; components comparison between breastmilk and cow's milk and when the mother fell sick. whether she have to be feed breastmilk. or not. In the conclusion. this study revealed that knowledge of breastfeeding promoted practice of breastfeeding. However we suggest that systemic and supportive breastfeeding program for promoting the knowledge and the practice rate of breastfeeding have to be provided by nurses.
Purposes: This experimental study was designed to verify the effect of inhalation of essential oils on body weight, feed intake, food efficiency rate and serum leptin. Methods: The subjects of this study were 90 growing SD rats(46 males and 44 females). They were allocated into one of four groups, the Fennel group, Patchouli group, Bergamot group and control group. The experimental treatment was the inhalation of aromatherapy essential oils which was applied two times a day for 10 minutes each during 8 weeks. To evaluate the effects, body weight, feed intake, food efficiency rate and serum leptin were measured before and after the treatment. The collected data was analyzed by repeated measures of Kolmogorov-smirnov test and Normal Q-Q plot for nomality, Kruskal Wallis test and $X^2-test$ for experimental effects with the SPSS program. Results: The food efficiency rate was significantly lower in the Patchouli group and Fennel group than in the Bergamot group and control group(P=.000). No significant group effects were found for SD rat's body weight, feeding amount and serum leptin. Conclusion: In conclusion, these findings indicate that the inhalation of essential oils could be effective in lowering the food efficiency rate rather than the feed intake.
Background: Having been known as a virulent disease in 1970s, cancer is now onsidered a chronic disease and 64% of cancer patients live for five years after diagnosis. Home care has gradually gained more importance and it is a great burden on the shoulders of caregivers. Caregivers have to undertake the responsibility of the cancer patient's home management, and organize care and arrange health care services according to the ever-changing condition of patients. Caregivers should be prepared for home care so they can provide accurate and complete care to patients.
