The highest was inquisitiveness, the lowest was systematicity. The most frequent decision making style was revealed a rational decision making. The next was dependant decision making, intuitional decision making as follows. The critical thinking disposition and rational decision making had a statistically significant positive correlation. • The purpose of this study was to describe decision making model of 180 public health nurses in Korea and their knowledge structure for decision making. The differences of decision making models by nurse's knowledge structure were also tested. Research concepts were measured using the instrument based on systemic and interpretive decision making approaches that were developed by Lauri & Salantera (1995). The results were as follows. 1. The public health nurses turned to, most commonly, a mixed practical-theoretical knowledge structure (45.9%), followed by practical knowledge (32%) and theoretical knowledge (22.1%). 2. The six different decision making models were identified. These were named for decision making theories and nursing process. These were client-oriented decision making, rule-oriented systemic decision making, wholistic and intuitive decision making, decision making depending on subjective view and experience, systemic decision making for defining problems. 3. The public nurses who had practical and practical-theoretical knowledge structure and community health practitioner (CHP) retold that decision making depends on subjective view and experience. Also the public health nurses who had 5~19 years clinical experience represented hypothetico-deductive decision making for defining problems.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research was to describe the decision making experience of VIP ward nurses in the clinical practice adjustment process. The research question was about "how nurses adjust their clinical practice to nursing situations and develop decision making process in a VIP ward." Method: The methodology of collecting and analyzing the data was based on the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin(1998). The data was collected through in-depth interviews with 10 nurses from July to November, 2007. Results: The core category of nursing care decision making process was named as "adjusting with flexibility and deepened insight." The clinical practice adjustment process in nursing care decision making has progressed through four preceding interlocking phases: 1) dependent phase, 2) defensive phase, 3) independent phase, 4) integrative phase. These phases were classified by the level of nurses' dependency, proactivity, presupposition and integration. Conclusion: The result of this study indicated that nurse's decision making depended on their experiences and the nature of social context in which nursing occurs. Therefore, it is important to elaborate an effective training program for nurses to develop the phases of nursing care decision making.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore professional autonomy, nursing work environment, and clinical decision making ability and to determine predictors of clinical decision making ability among clinical nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used in this study and 263 clinical nurses were selected from advanced-level hospitals with over 500 beds located in D metropolitan city. Independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression analyses were done with the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: Clinical nurses reported moderate levels of professional autonomy, nursing work environment and clinical decision making ability. Marital status, professional autonomy and nursing work environment accounted for 25% of variance in clinical decision making ability required in various clinical settings. Importantly, being married, higher level of professional autonomy, and greater satisfaction with work environment were significantly associated with better decision making ability. Conclusion: Findings indicate that improving the quality of decision making in the healthcare settings requires awareness of the multiple effects of individual, occupational and environmental features. Nurses' ability to make effective clinical decisions may rely on personal characteristics, the degree of autonomy in their job, and nurses' satisfaction with their work environment.
