Influence of Nursing Students' Communication and Leadership on Ethical Nursing Competency (간호대학생의 의사소통, 리더십이 윤리적 간호역량에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between communication, leadership, and ethical nursing competency for nursing students and to identify factors that affect the ethical nursing competency of nursing students. The subjects who participated in this study were 328 people, and data were collected using questionnaires after obtaining research consent. The collected data was statistically analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 28.0 program. As a result of this study, ethical nursing competency and communication (r=.67, p<.001) and leadership (r=.56, p<.001) showed a significant positive correlation. The factors that affect the ethical nursing competency of nursing students are communication (𝛽=.52, p<.001) and leadership (𝛽=.23, p<.001) has been identified. The regression model of this study was significant (F=155.74, p<.001). The explanatory power of the model was 48%. Therefore, it should include improving communication skills and leadership when developing a program to inhance the ethical nursing competency of nursing students.

Knowledge, Problem Solving Process, and Self-Efficacy on Clinical Competency Related to Home Health Nursing Management for Diabetes Mellitus Management by Nursing Students (간호대학생의 당뇨병 방문건강관리 관련 지식, 문제해결과정, 자기효능감이 임상수행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore the influence of knowledge, problem-solving processes, and self-efficacy on the clinical competency of nursing students in the home health nursing management of diabetes mellitus (DM). Methods: The subjects of this study were 136 nursing students. Data were collected from April 18 to April 29, 2022, and analyzed using the SPSS 23.0 program. Results: The total mean scores of nursing students' knowledge, problem-solving process, self-efficacy, and clinical competency in DM home health nursing management were 71.24, 3.92, 7.47, and 4.09, respectively. Clinical competency was significantly and positively correlated with the problem-solving process (r=.60, p<.001) and self-efficacy (r=.48, p<.001) but not with knowledge (r=.09, p=.311). The problem-solving process was also positively correlated with self-efficacy (r=.41, p<.001). Regression analysis revealed a 41.4% variance in the nursing student's clinical competency with problem-solving process (β=.47, p<.001) and self-efficacy (β=.28, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study provide valuable evidence for the development of educational interventions aimed at enhancing the clinical competency of nursing students in relation to home-visit healthcare services for DM management.

Effects of Nursing Education using a High-fidelity Patient Simulator on Self-directed Learning Competency, Clinical Knowledge, and Problem-solving Ability among Nursing Students (High-fidelity Patient Simulator를 활용한 간호교육이 간호학생의 자기주도학습역량, 임상수행지식 및 문제해결력에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effects of simulation-based nursing education (for the care of congestive heart failure patients) on self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge and problem-solving ability among nursing students. Methods: A one-group, pre-post design was utilized with 87 nursing students as the subjects. The scenario of simulation-based nursing education was created using a high-fidelity patient stimulator, and consisted of four states ((1) assessment, (2) reviewing laboratory data and administering medications and treatments, (3) managing increased dyspnea and decreased urine output, and (4) handling the "getting better" state). The simulation-based nursing education included orientation, team-based learning, team-based practice, and debriefing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients and paired t-tests. Results: The scores on the factors for self-directed learning competency (t=-2.57, p= .011), clinical knowledge (t=-6.85, p<.001), and problem-solving ability (t=-3.01, p= .003) increased significantly after the education intervention. Conclusion: Simulation-based nursing education is useful in improving self-directed learning competency, clinical knowledge, and problem-solving ability in nursing students.

The Effects of Introductory Clinical Practice Education Program (임상입문 특별실습교육프로그램의 운영 및 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of introductory clinical practice education program for nursing students. The nursing students of 94 participated the introductory education program of 80 hours. The questionnaire survey on self efficacy and clinical competency were conducted 3 times(before education, after education, 2 months after education) to the nursing students. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 17.0 program. The results were as follows; The self efficacy and the clinical competency score showed a significant change in the posttest. Self efficacy and clinical competency have significant relationships with college life satisfaction, interpersonal relationship and academic aptitude satisfaction. Also, self efficacy has significant relationship with clinical competency and clinical practice satisfaction. As a result, the introductory clinical practice education program can be helpful to adjustment for nursing students before clinical practice.

Emergency Nurses' Perceived Competency and Frequency of Educational Intervention (응급실 간호사의 교육중재 수행능력과 수행빈도)

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate emergency nurses' perceived competency and frequency of 17 educational interventions. Methods: A mail survey was administered to a convenience sample of 744 nurses in 143 emergency departments across the nation. Results: The mean score for overall competency was 2.90 out of 4. The competency score for staff education (2.40 out of 4) was lower than that of patient/family education (3.40 out of 4). The mean score for overall frequency was 3.34 out of 5. The frequency score for staff education (2.27 out of 5) was lower than that of patient/family education (4.39 out of 5). Emergency nurses' perceived competency was significantly correlated with frequency of educational interventions. Overall competency score was different according to the nurses' age, education, position, hospital experience, emergency experience and the type of emergency department. Conclusions: Although the overall competency is high, the competency on some areas of educational intervention remains insufficient. Educational programs to reinforce emergency nurses' educational competency and evidenced based protocols on education should be developed.

Effects of Task Performance Style in Nursing Management Practicum on Problem-Solving and Nursing Competency according to Communication Ability of Nursing Students (간호관리학 임상실습에서 과제수행방식이 간호대학생의 의사소통능력에 따라 문제해결능력과 간호역량에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine effects of task performance style, communication ability and their interaction on problem-solving ability and nursing competency of nursing students participating in a nursing management practicum. Methods: The study was a non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design. Participants were 56 fourth year nursing students (25 in the cooperative task group and 31 in the individual task group) and data were collected from March to September 2010. Additionally, two groups were classified based on communication ability of students and four groups were classified by their task performance style and communication ability. Problem-solving ability and nursing competency were measured pre- and post-test and compared between groups. Data were analyzed using SPSS Windows 17.0 program. Results: Neither problem-solving ability and nursing competency were statistically significantly different according to task performance style. Nursing competency was statistically significantly higher in the high communication group compared to the low communication group. Problem-solving ability was significantly different among the four groups classified by task performance style and communication ability. Conclusion: Nursing educators may need to improve students' communication ability to improve nursing competency and also assign different tasks based on communication ability of nursing students to improve problem-solving ability.

The Effects of Parent-Adolescent Intimacy, Parent-Adolescent Communication, and Empathy on Clinical Competency of Nursing Students (간호대학생의 부모자녀 친밀감, 부모자녀 의사소통, 공감능력이 임상수행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : This study aimed to identify the effects parent-adolescent intimacy, parent-adolescent communication, and empathy on the clinical competency of nursing students. Method : Data were collected by 175 nursing students using a self-questionnaire from May 17 to 31, 2017. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 21.0 using an independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Result : There were significant positive correlations between clinical competency and the other variables. The strongest predictors of clinical competency were parent-adolescent intimacy (${\beta}=.33$) and academic record (${\beta}=.21$), and the model explained 11.3% (F=16.04, p<.001) of the variance. Conclusion : The findings indicated that further studies are needed to explore various factors influencing clinical competency and develop education programs for college nursing students.

The Relationship Between Self-Disclosure and Clinical Competency in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 자기표출과 임상수행능력간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the level of self-disclosure and clinical competency and the relationships between self-disclosure and clinical competency in nursing students. The subjects were consisted of 662 nursing students from six universities and five junior colleges. The data were collected conveniently by self reporting questionnaires given to the students from September 13 to October 23, 1999. The instruments for this study were JSDQ and clinical competency measurement tool. The data were analyzed by SAS/PC program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. The results of this study are as follows : 1. The mean score for the level of self- disclosure was 3.29$\pm$0.98. 2. The mean score for the level of clinical competency was 3.93$\pm$1.00. The mean score for the dimension of skills, professional attitudes, teaching and coordinating, nursing process, interpersonal relationships were 4.09$\pm$0.77, 4.08$\pm$0.82, 3.97$\pm$ 0.90, 3.77$\pm$0.76 and 3.37$\pm$0.75 respectively. 3. The statistically significant difference in the score of the self-disclosure according to the educational background (F=9.42, p<.01), grade (F=5.59, p<.01), religion (F=2.68, p<.05), satisfaction of nursing major (F=14.20, p<.0001), and satisfaction of nursing practice (F=5.42, p<.01) was obtained. 4. The statistically significant difference in the score of the clinical competency according to the grade (F=32.44, p<.0001), achieved performance records (F=3.52, p<.05), satisfaction of nursing major (F=12.06, p<.0001), satisfaction of nursing practice (F=27.35, p<.0001) was obtained. 5. The data shows the positive correlations between self-disclosure and skill (r=.3231, p<.0001), between self- disclosure and teaching/coordinating (r=.1912, p<.0001), between self-disclosure and interpersonal relationship (r=.3064, p<.0001), between self-disclosure and professional attitude (r=.2789, p<.0001), between self-disclosure and nursing process (r=.2766, p<.0001).

The Effectiveness of Nursing Information Literacy Competency Enhancement Program on Evidence-Based Practice Competencies and Problem Solving Skills in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 간호정보활용역량 강화프로그램이 근거기반실무 역량과 문제해결능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and examine the effectiveness (knowledge, attitude, skills of Evidence-Based Practice, and problem solving skills) of nursing information literacy competency enhancement program for nursing students. It is a pre-post design study carried out with a single group of 72 sophomores in a nursing college. Nursing information literacy competency enhancement program of 6 times (8 hours) was provided to nursing students. Our results have demonstrated that knowledge, attitude, skills of evidence-based practice, and problem solving skills were significantly higher in nursing students. In conclusion, the nursing information literacy competency enhancement program was effective in promoting knowledge, attitude, skills of evidence-based practice and problem solving skills. Based on our results, the nursing information literacy competency enhancement program can provide a basis for enhancing evidence-based nursing practice competencies and problem solving skills of nursing students.

The Influence of Nurses' Communication Competency, Critical Thinking Disposition, and Perception of Patient Safety Culture on Patient Safety Competency in Armed Forces Hospitals (군 병원 간호사의 의사소통능력, 비판적 사고성향, 환자안전문화 인식이 환자안전역량에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study examined the influence of nurses' communication competency, critical thinking disposition, and perception of patient safety culture on patient safety competency in armed forces hospitals. Methods: A crosssectional design was employed with a convenience sample of 204 nurse officers from four armed forces hospitals in South Korea. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire from August 10~23, 2019, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. All analyses were conducted using SPSS for Windows 21.0. Results: Patient safety competency scores were 4.35±0.40 for patient safety attitudes, 3.63±0.64 for patient safety knowledge, and 3.94±0.51 for patient safety skill. Communication competency, critical thinking disposition, and perception of patient safety culture were positively correlated with patient safety competency. Communication competency (β=.30, p=.002) and perception of patient safety culture (β=.24, p=.001) were identified as particularly important factors influencing patient safety competency. Conclusion: This study's results suggest that education programs to enhance communication competency and patient safety culture could increase patient safety competency among nurses in armed forces hospitals.
