Accurately predicting localized heavy rainfall is challenging without high-resolution mesoscale cloud information in the numerical model's initial field, as precipitation intensity and amount vary significantly across regions. In the Korean Peninsula, the radar observation network covers the entire country, providing high-resolution data on hydrometeors which is suitable for data assimilation (DA). During the pre-processing stage, radar reflectivity is classified into hydrometeors (e.g., rain, snow, graupel) using the background temperature field. The mixing ratio of each hydrometeor is converted and inputted into a numerical model. Moreover, assimilating saturated water vapor mixing ratio and decomposing radar radial velocity into a three-dimensional wind vector improves the atmospheric dynamic field. This study presents radar DA experiments using a numerical prediction model to enhance the wind, water vapor, and hydrometeor mixing ratio information. The impact of radar DA on precipitation prediction is analyzed separately for each radar component. Assimilating radial velocity improves the dynamic field, while assimilating hydrometeor mixing ratio reduces the spin-up period in cloud microphysical processes, simulating initial precipitation growth. Assimilating water vapor mixing ratio further captures a moist atmospheric environment, maintaining continuous growth of hydrometeors, resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall. Overall, the radar DA experiment showed a 32.78% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to experiments without DA across four cases. Further research in related fields is necessary to improve predictions of mesoscale heavy rainfall in South Korea, mitigating its impact on human life and property.

In thus paper we validate a numerical model for wave-structure interaction by comparing numerical results with laboratory data. The numerical model is based on the Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations for an incompressible fluid. The N-S equations are solved by a two-step projection finite volume scheme and the free surface displacements are tracked by the volume of fluid (VOF) method The numerical model is used to simulate solitary waves and their interaction with a group of slender vertical piles. Numerical results are compared with the laboratory data and very good agreement is observed for the time history of free surface displacement, fluid particle velocity and wave force. The agreement for dynamic pressure on the cylinder is less satisfactory, which is primarily caused by instrument errors.
Three free parameters included in a cumulus parameterization are optimized by using micro-genetic algorithm for three precipitation cases occurred in the Korea Peninsula during the summer season in order to reduce biases in a regional model associated with the uncertainties of the parameters and thus to improve the predictability of precipitation. The first parameter is the one that determines the threshold in convective trigger condition. The second parameter is the one that determines boundary layer forcing in convective closure. Finally, the third parameter is the one used in calculating conversion parameter determining the fraction of condensate converted to convective precipitation. Optimized parameters reduce the occurrence of convections by suppressing the trigger of convection. The reduced convection occurrence decreases light precipitation but increases heavy precipitation. The sensitivity experiments are conducted to examine the effects of the optimized parameters on the predictability of precipitation. The predictability of precipitation is the best when the three optimized parameters are applied to the parameterization at the same time. The first parameter most dominantly affects the predictability of precipitation. Short-range forecasts for July 2018 are also conducted to statistically assess the precipitation predictability. It is found that the predictability of precipitation is consistently improved with the optimized parameters.
This paper addresses the issue of field measurement of excavation damage zone (EDZ) and its numerical simulation method considering both excavation unloading and blasting load effects. Firstly, a 2000 m-deep rock cavern in China is focused. A detailed analysis is conducted on the field measurement data regarding the mechanical response of rock masses subjected to excavation and blasting operation. The extent of EDZ is revealed 3.6 m-4.0 m, accounting for 28.6% of the cavern span, so it is significantly larger than rock caverns at conventional overburden depth. The rock mass mechanical response subjected to excavation and blasting is time-independent. Afterwards, based on findings of the field measurement data, a numerical evaluation method for EDZ determination considering both excavation unloading and blasting load effects is presented. The basic idea and general procedures are illustrated. It features a calibration operation of damage constant, which is defined in an elasto-plastic damage constitutive model, and a regression process of blasting load using field blasting vibration monitoring data. The numerical simulation results are basically consistent with the field measurement results. Further, some issues regarding the blasting loads, applicability of proposed numerical method, and some other factors are discussed. In conclusion, the field measurement data collected from the 2000 m-deep rock cavern and the corresponding findings will broaden the understanding of tunnel behavior subjected to excavation and blasting at great depth. Meanwhile, the presented numerical simulation method for EDZ determination considering both excavation unloading and blasting load effects can be used to evaluate rock caverns with similar characteristics.

Numerical analysis of a gaseous jet injected into a closed nozzle was carried out considering the valve operation to simulate the interior pressure development of closed nozzle. Pressure data was obtained through valve operation and we compared numerical analysis with experiment data. Commercial code was used for the present calculation. Numerical results of a pressure development since its start showed good agreement for experiment data of the nozzle operation.

This paper measures the forced convective heat transfer from heated cylinder to air flow in a rectangular duct at Re$_{D}$ =2,337, 4,589, 6,621 and 7,944 through experiments. And the heat transfer is computed by 3-D numerical computation in which various turbulent models are applied. It is shown through the comparison of experimental and computed data that numerical computation with standard k-$\varepsilon$ model predicts the experimental data most accurately. Furthermore, the correlation from the computed heat transfer is almost similar to that from the experiment when Re$_{D}$ is greater than 4,589. In addition, the correlation of McAdams is the closest to that from experimental data among various correlations from literature in the range of Reynolds number.ber.

The present study investigates the fire suppression characteristics using a water mist fire suppression system. Numerical simulations of fire suppression with water mist are performed with considering the interaction of fire plume and water droplet, droplet evaporation, and combustion of pool fire. The predicted temperature fields of smoke layer are compared with that of measured data. Numerical results agree with the experimental results within 5$^{\circ}C$ in the case without water mist In the case of fire suppression with water mist, numerical results dose not predict well lot temperature field in the gradual cooling region after water mist injection. But the predicted results of initial fire suppression are in good agreement with that of measured data. The reason of the discrepancy between predicted and measured data is due to the variation of turning rate during the injection of water mist. The effect of burning rate on the fire suppression is left as future study.

This paper describes an adaptive management approach for predicting, monitoring, and controlling ground movements associated with excavations in urban areas. Successful use of monitoring data to update performance predictions of supported excavations depends equally on reasonable numerical simulations of performance, the type of monitoring data used as observations, and the optimization techniques used to minimize the difference between predictions and observed performance. This paper summarizes each of these factors and emphasizes their inter-dependence. Numerical considerations are described, including the initial stress and boundary conditions, the importance of reasonable representation of the construction process, and factors affecting the selection of the constitutive model. Monitoring data that can be used in conjunction with current numerical capabilities are discussed, including laser scanning and webcams for developing an accurate record of construction activities, and automated and remote instrumentations to measure movements. Self-updating numerical models that have been successfully used to compute anticipated ground movements, update predictions of field observations and to learn from field observations are summarized. Applications of these techniques from case studies are presented to illustrate the capabilities of this approach.
Numerical experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of data assimilation of observational data on weather and PM (particulate matter) prediction. Observational data applied to numerical experiment are aircraft observation, satellite observation, upper level observation, and AWS (automatic weather system) data. In the case of grid nudging, the prediction performance of the meteorological field is largely improved compared with the case without data assimilations because the overall pressure distribution can be changed. So grid nudging effect can be significant when synoptic weather pattern strongly affects Korean Peninsula. Predictability of meteorological factors can be expected to improve through a number of observational data assimilation, but data assimilation by single data often occurred to be less predictive than without data assimilation. Variation of air pressure due to observation nudging with high prediction efficiency can improve prediction accuracy of whole model domain. However, in areas with complex terrain such as the eastern part of the Korean peninsula, the improvement due to grid nudging were only limited. In such cases, it would be more effective to aggregate assimilated data.

The encryption method is a well established technology for protecting sensitive data. However, once encrypted, the data can no longer be easily queried. The performance of the database depends on how to encrypt the sensitive data. In this paper we review the conventional encryption method which can be partially queried and propose the encryption method for numerical data which can be effectively queried. The proposed system includes the design of the service scenario, and metadata.
