Recently, the horizontal axis rotor performance optimizer (HARP_Opt) tool was developed in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA. This innovative tool is becoming more popular in the wind turbine industry and in the field of academic research. HARP_Optwas developed on the basis of two fundamental modules, namely, WT_Perf, a performance evaluator computer code using the blade element momentum theory; and a genetic algorithm module, which is used as an optimizer. A pattern search algorithm was more recently incorporated to enhance the optimization capability, especially the calculation time and consistency of the solutions. The blade optimization is an aspect that is highly dependent on experience and requires significant consideration on rotor control strategies, wind data, and generator type. In this study, the effects of rotor control strategies including fixed speed and fixed pitch, variable speed and fixed pitch, fixed speed and variable pitch, and variable speed and variable pitch algorithms on optimal blade shapes and rotor performance are investigated using optimized blade designs. The effects of environmental wind data and the objective functions used for optimization are also quantitatively evaluated using the HARP_Opt tool. Performance indices such as annual energy production, thrust, torque, and roof-flap moment forces are compared.
Numerical simulations by three-dimensional Particle Flow Code($PFC^{3D}$, Itasca) considering distinct element method (DEM) were carried out for prediction of triaxial compression test with sand material. The effect of scale conditions for numerical model and distinct material on final prediction results was analyzed by numerical models under various scale conditions, and following observations were made from the numerical experiments. It is very useful to model the initial material condition without any porosity conversion from 2-D to 3-D DEM. Numerical experiments have shown that in all cases considered, 3D distinct element modeling could provide good agreement on stress-strain behavior, volume change and strength properties with laboratory testing results. It was important thing to assess reasonable scale ratio of numerical model and distinct elements for saving calculation time and securing calculation efficiency under condition with accuracy and appropriateness as numerical laboratory. As results of DEM simulations under various scale conditions, most of results show that shear strength properties as cohesion and internal friction angle are similar in condition of $D_{mod}/D_{gmax}$ < 10. It shows that 3-D distinct element method could be used as efficient tool to assess strength properties by numerical laboratory technique.

Driftwood is one of serious problems in a river environment. In several countries, such as Indonesia, Japan, and Italy, the driftwood frequently appears in a river basin, and it can alter the channel bed, flow configuration by wood deposition and jam formation. Therefore, the studies related to driftwood have been actively conducted by many researchers to understand the mechanism of driftwood dynamics. In particular, wood motion by collision is one of the difficult issues in the numerical simulation because the calculation for wood collision requires significantly expensive calculation time due to small time step. Thus, this study conducted the numerical simulation in consideration of the wood motion by water flow and wood collision to understand the wood dynamics in terms of computation. We used the 2D (two-dimensional) depth-averaged velocity model, Nays2DH, which is a Eulerian model to calculate the water flow on the generalized coordinate. A Lagrangian type driftwood model, which expresses the driftwood as connected sphere shape particles, was employed to Nays2DH. In addition, the present study considered root wad effect by using larger diameter for a particle at a head of driftwood. An anisotropic bed friction was considered for the sliding motion dependent on stemwise, streamwise and motion directions. We particularly considered changeable draft at each particle and projection area by an angle between stemwise and flow directions to precisely reproduce the wood motions. The simulation results were compared with experimental results to verify the model. As a result, the simulation results showed good agreement with experimental results. Through this study, it would be expected that this model is a useful tool to predict the driftwood effect in the river flow.

The paper provides some developments of a numerical approach ("Numerical Calculation of Flow Within Armour Units", FWAU) to the design of rubble mound breakwaters. The hydrodynamics of wave induced flow within the interstices of concrete blocks is simulated by making use of advanced, but well tested, CFD techniques to integrate RANS equations. While computationally very heavy, FWAU is gaining ground, due to its obvious advantages over the "porous media", i.e. the possibility of accounting for the highly non stationary effects, the reduced need of ad hoc calibration of filtration parameters and also - in perspective - the evaluation of hydrodynamic forces on single blocks. FWAU however is a complex technique, and in order to turn it into a practical design tool, a number of difficulties have to be overcome. The paper presents recent results about this validation, as well as insight into fluid dynamical aspects.

Finite element analysis using modern constitutive equation is one of the most general tools to simulate the deformation behavior and to predict the life of the structure. Constitutive equation becomes complicated so as to predict the material behavior more accurately than the classical models. Because of the complexity of constitutive model, numerical treatment becomes so difficult that the calculation should be verified carefully. One-element tests, simple tension or simple shear, are usually used to verify the accuracy of finite element analysis using complicated constitutive model. Since this test is mainly focused on the time integration scheme, it is also necessary to verify the equilibrium iteration using material stiffness matrix and to compare FE results with solution of structures. In this investigation, viscoplastic solution of thick walled cylinder was derived considering axial constraints and was compared with the finite element analysis. All the numerical solutions showed a good coincidence with FE results. This numerical solution can be used as a verification tool for newly developed FE code with complicated constitutive model.

In general, a method for generating irregular wave by combination of component waves obtained from linear wave theory is widely used. In these method, however, mean water surface elevation is rising from time to time because of nonlinear effect of wave. In this study, for the rising problem of mean water surface elevation and stabilization of calculation from time to time, mass transport velocity for horizontal velocity at wave source position is considered. The rising problem of mean water surface elevation is checked by comparing calculated wave profile from numerical technique proposed in this study with target wave profile at wave source position in numerical wave tank by using CADMAS-SURF code. And, by generating irregular wave, the validity of wave overtopping rate estimated from this numerical analysis is discussed by comparing computed results with measured results in hydraulic model experiments for vertical seawall located on a sloping sea bottom. As a results, the computations are validated against the previously experimental results by hydraulic model test and numerical results of this study and a good agreement is observed. Therefore, numerical technique of this study is a powerful tool for estimating wave overtopping rate over the crest of coastal structure.
Viscous flow around an actual ship is calculated by an use of RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. Reynolds stress is modelled by using k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model and the law of wall is applied near the body. Body fitted coordinates are introduced for the treatment of the complex boundary of the ship hull form. The transformed equations in the computational domain are numerically solved by an employment of FVM(Finite Volume Method). SIMPLE(Semi-Implcit Pressure Linked Equation) method is adopted in the calculation of pressure and the solution of the disssssssscretized equation is obtained by the line-by-line method with the use of TDMA(Tri-Diagonal Matrix Algorithme). The subject ship model of actual calculation is 4,410 TEU class container carrier. For 4 geosim models the calculated viscous resistancce values are compared with the model test results and analyzed on their componentss. The resistance performance of an actual ship is predicted very resonably, so this mothod may be utilized as a design tool of hull form.

The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine a 500 kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) power performance and 3-D rotor flow characteristics, which are compared to calculation data from Delft University. The experimental approach, which has been the main method of investigation, appears to be reaching its limits, the cost increasing relate with the size of wind turbines. Hence, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes solvers is considered a very serious contender. We has used the CFD software package CFX-TASCflow as a modeling tool to predict the power performance and 3-D flow characteristics of a wind turbine on the basis of its geometry and operating data. The wind turbine with 40m diameters rotor, it was scaled to compare with the calculation data from delft university. The HAWT, which has eight-rpm variations are investigated respectively. The pitch angle is $+0.5^{\circ}$and wind speed is fixed at 5m/s. The tip speed ratio (TSR) of the HAWT ranging from 2.89 to 9.63.

A damage analysis simulator, which is applicable for evaluating the residual strength of damaged ship, was developed in this paper. For this process, CDM (Continuum Damage Mechanics) approach has been implemented to the simulator by virtue of the numerical technique for evaluation of crack initiation and/or enlargement. A damage calculation program has been linked with a commercial finite element analysis code (NASTRAN) and a ultimate strength evaluation program (LSAP) in order to assess residual strength of damaged ship. As a results of series calculation for the frigate model, giving the quantitative structural damage to the ultimate strength evaluation, a residual strength with damage is predicted to be at least 70 percentage lower than the case of intact condition. It was found that the proposed technique can be used as a design support tool in the field of simulation based ship design.

A numerical flow analysis has been performed on the partial admission turbine of KARI turbopump to support the aerodynamic and structural dynamic assessments. The flow-field in a partial admission turbine is essentially three dimensional and unsteady because of a tip clearance and a finite number of nozzles. Therefore the mixing plane method is generally not appropriate. To avoid heavy computational load due to an unsteady three dimensional calculation, a frozen rotor method was implemented in steady calculation. It adopted a rotating frame in the grid block of a rotor blade by adding some source terms in governing equations. Its results were compared with a mixing plane method. The frozen rotor method can detect the variation of flow-field dependent upon the blade's circumferential position relative to the nozzle. It gives a idea of wake loss mechanism starting from the lip of a nozzle. This wake loss was assumed to be one of the most difficult issues in turbine designers. Thus, the frozen rotor approach has proven to be an efficient and robust tool in design of a partial admission turbine.
