For design of maritime structure, it is necessary to evaluate the effect and stability of the structure against wave action. Laboratory model experiments and their empirical formulas are mainly used to estimate those at present, although empirical formulas have a problem of accuracy and hydraulic experiments of cost and duration. In addition, performance-based design, which may be popularized as a new design concept in the near future, requires much more information than that obtained by empirical formulas and laboratory tests. Thus, numerical simulation may become more important hereafter for structure design. (omitted)

In this paper, local ratcheting behavior of 1045 steel plates with circular cutout was investigated. Experimental tests were carried out by a Zwick/Roell HB 100 servo hydraulic machine. In order to measure the local strain at notch root, a data acquisition system with strain gauge was used. Various notch diameters and distances of strain gauges mounted from the notch root were found influential in the magnitude of local ratcheting strain. It was found that the local maximum principal stress plays a crucial role in increasing the local plastic deformation. Numerical simulation was done by ABAQUS software using nonlinear isotropic/kinematic hardening model. Material parameters of hardening model were attained from several stabilized cycles of flat specimens subjected to symmetric strain cycles. The nonlinear kinematic hardening model along with the Neuber's rule was employed to assess local ratcheting at the notch root of steel plates. The results of the numerical simulations agreed closely with those measured values in this study. Both ratcheting progress and mean stress relaxation occurred simultaneously at the notch root.
A multi-dimensional component for the thermal-hydraulic system analysis code, MARS, was developed for a more realistic three-dimensional analysis of nuclear systems. A three-dimensional and two-fluid model for a two-phase flow in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates was employed. The governing equations and physical constitutive relationships were extended from those of a one-dimensional version. The numerical solution method adopted a semi-implicit and finite-difference method based on a staggered-grid mesh and a donor-cell scheme. The relevant length scale was very coarse compared to commercial computational fluid dynamics tools. Thus a simple Prandtl's mixing length turbulence model was applied to interpret the turbulent induced momentum and energy diffusivity. Non drag interfacial forces were not considered as in the general nuclear system codes. Several conceptual cases with analytic solutions were chosen and analyzed to assess the fundamental terms. RPI air-water and UPTF 7 tests were simulated and compared to the experimental data. The simulation results for the RPI air-water two-phase flow experiment showed good agreement with the measured void fraction. The simulation results for the UPTF downcomer test 7 were compared to the experiment data and the results from other multi-dimensional system codes for the ECC delivery flow.
In this paper, a real-time simulation model of an excavator using Amesim was proposed, considered the operation of functional valves with the main control valve (MCV). The hydraulic system models including the pump and MCV have been developed. The kinematic and dynamic models of the manipulator have also been developed, to confirm the behavior of the excavator. The MCV model includes various functional valves such as the regenerative valves, holding valves, swing and boom priority valves, and regen-cut valves so that simulations similar to real excavators can be performed. Additionally, to obtain the real-time calculation performance, the parts with no major influence on the dynamic behavior were simplified, high frequency factors were removed, and parameters were optimized. The models were compared with each other through the numerical analysis with variable time-step and fixed time-step, and the results were verified by comparison with the results of the actual vehicle tests.

In this paper, wave responses of buoyant flap-typed storm surge barriers was studied numerically. Wave motions were modeled by using a linear potential wave theory, and behaviors of structures were represented as a Newton's 2nd law of motion. The near field region of the fluid was discretized as conventional quadratic iso-parametric elements, while the far field was modeled as infinite elements. Comparisons with the results from hydraulic model tests show that the present model gives good results. By using the model, the applicability of a buoyant flap-typed storm surge barrier in Masan bay was investigated considering field environmental conditions.

GASFLOW-MPI is a widely used scalable computational fluid dynamics numerical tool to simulate the fluid turbulence behavior, combustion dynamics, and other related thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear power plant containment. An efficient scalable linear solver for the large-scale pressure equation is one of the key issues to ensure the computational efficiency of GASFLOW-MPI. Several advanced Krylov subspace methods and scalable preconditioning methods are compared and analyzed to improve the computational performance. With the help of the powerful computational capability, the large eddy simulation turbulent model is used to resolve more detailed turbulent behaviors. A backward-facing step flow is performed to study the free shear layer, the recirculation region, and the boundary layer, which is widespread in many scientific and engineering applications. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data in the literature and the direct numerical simulation results by GASFLOW-MPI. Both time-averaged velocity profile and turbulent intensity are well consistent with the experimental data and direct numerical simulation result. Furthermore, the frequency spectrum is presented and a -5/3 energy decay is observed for a wide range of frequencies, satisfying the turbulent energy spectrum theory. Parallel scaling tests are also implemented on the KIT/IKET cluster and a linear scaling is realized for GASFLOW-MPI.

Nonlinear weirs, such as labyrinth and piano key weirs, are suitable methods to handle increased flood flows that may be expected due to climate change. Although specific physical models are considered to be an effective way of investigating fluid flows, simply conducting physical model tests is insufficient to fully comprehend the hydraulic and discharge characteristics of non-linear weirs. In this study, computational fluid dynamics algorithms have been used extensively to investigate complex flow physics instead of relying on reduced scale models. The discharge capacity of the piano key weir and the rectangular labyrinth weir is compared using a three-dimensional numerical model, which is validated by the available experimental data. The results confirm that piano key weir is more efficient than the rectangular labyrinth weir for a wide range of head water ratios. By analyzing the contribution of discharge over inlet, outlet and sidewall crests, the factor that make the piano key weir superior to the rectangular weir is the sidewall discharge.

Recently, frequency occurring flood and drought has increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows. Therefore, the simulation of the flow distribution in natural rivers is great importance to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. However The serious problem facing two-dimensional hydraulic model is the treatment of wet and dry areas. The objective of this study is to investigate the wet and dry parameters that have direct relevance to model performance in situations where inundation of initially dry areas occurs. Several numerical simulations were carried out, which examined the performance of the marsh porosity method for the purpose of sensitivity analysis. Experimental channel and a variety of channel were performed for model tests. The results were compared with those of the observation data and simulation data of existing model. The RMA-2 model displayed reasonable flow distribution compare to the observation data and simulation data of existing model in dry area for application of natural river flow. As a result of this study, effectively applied marsh porosity method provide a reliable results for flow distribution of wet and dry area, it could be further developed to basis for extending to water quality and sediment transport analysis.
The validation of a groundwater source heat pump system installation site is estimated by bydrogeothermic model ing. The hydraulic characteristics of the aquifer system is evaluated from pumping and recovery tests. In addition, the temperature distribution by the pumping and the injection of groundwater, and water level fluctuations are simulated by numerical modeling. The total cooling and heating load for the building is designed as 120RT(refrigeration ton) and the ground water source heat pump system covers 50RT as a subsidiary system The scenario of heat pump operation is organized as pumping and inject ion of groundwater that is performed for 8 hours per day in cooling mode for 90 days during the summer season The heat transfer by the injected warm water is limited near the inject ion wells in the simulated temperature distribution. The reason is that the given operation time is too short to expect broad thermal diffusion in large volume of the aquifer in the simulation time The simulated groundwater level and temperature distribution can be used as important data to develope an energy effective pumping and injection well system. Also it will be very useful to evaluate the hydraulic capacity of a target groundwater reservoir.
Artificial recharge technology is a method for solving problems such as groundwater level drop and ground subsidence caused by groundwater withdrawal. This study investigated the applicability of using the hydraulic conductivity of an aquifer to predict injection test results for aquifer restoration. Pumping and injection tests were performed under the same conditions as those for the artificial injection facility located in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do. The hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer, which plays a decisive role in restoring the groundwater level, was derived from the pumping test. A numerical model of a simplified on-site aquifer was constructed, and a transient analysis was applied with the same conditions as the pumping test. The correlation between the measured and the resulting model values is strong (R2 = 0.78). The injection test was performed in a sedimentary layer composed of silt sand and clay sand. From the results of the injection test, an empirical formula was derived using Theim's formula, which is a common well analysis solution to determine the parameters of the aquifer from time-level data. The model values from the empirical formula have a high degree of correlation (R2 = 0.99) with measured values. Under specific conditions, for areas where it is difficult to conduct an injection test, the formula from this study, which relies on the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer determined through the pumping test, may be used to predict reliable injection rates for groundwater restoration.
