Experimental results and numerical computations were conducted to investigate the effect of the confined wall on the flow and heat transfer characteristics for a two-dimensional impinging jet. Experimental results and Numerical solutions were obtained by using the particle image velocimetry and the commercial CFD code (CFX 11), respectively. The parameters studied were jet Reynolds number (Re=5,000), conditions of confined wall (unventilate), nozzle to plate spacings ($H/W=1{\sim}16$), and nozzle to nozzle spacing (S/W=6). Experimental and numerical results were agreed well with each other. The maximum heat transfer point was found variation of nozzle to plate spacings.

Experimental and numerical studies for three-dimensional pulsatile flows are conducted to investigate the flow characteristics in the bifurcated tubes. Velocity measurements in experimental study were made by both Pulsed Doppler Ultrasound(PDU) machine and Laser Doppler Anemometer(LDA) system. Glycerin is used for experimental study. Experimental results are used to verify the results of the numerical simulation. Flow characteristics of Newtonian fluid and blood in the bifurcated tubes under the steady and pulsatlie flows are numerically investigated. Finite volume method is employed for three-dimensional numerical simulations. Blood is considered as a non-Newtonian fluid and the constitutive equation of blood is used for the numerical analysis. Numerical analyses are focused on the flow patterns for various branch angles ranging from 30.deg. to 90.deg. and diameter ratios such as 1.0, 0.8, and 0.6. Pulsatile flow characteristics of blood are compared with those of Newtonian fluid. Parameter effects on axial velocity, pressure and wall shear stress distribution along the bifurcated tubes are discussed in terms of the branch angle, diameter ratio, and Reynolds number.
Finite element analysis(FEA) is the most popular numerical method to simulate plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure and can predict fatigue crack closure behavior. Finite element analysis under plane stress state using 4-node isoparametric elements is performed to investigate the detailed closure behavior of fatigue cracks and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The mesh of constant size elements on the crack surface can not correctly predict the opening level for fatigue crack as shown in the previous works. The crack opening behavior for the size mesh with a linear change shows almost flat stress level after a crack tip has passed by the monotonic plastic zone. The prediction of crack opening level presents a good agreement with published experimental data regardless of stress ratios, which are using the mesh of the elements that are in proportion to the reversed plastic zone size considering the opening stress intensity factors. Numerical interpolation results of finite element analysis can precisely predict the crack opening level. This method shows a good agreement with the experimental data regardless of the stress ratios and kinds of materials.
We developed numerical models to efficiently simulate the low-cycle fatigue behavior of a pipe elbow. To verify the model, in-plane cyclic bending tests of pipe elbow specimens were conducted, and a through crack occurred in the vicinity of the crown. Numerical models based on the erosion method and tie-break method are developed, and the numerical results are compared with experimental results. The calculated results of both models are in good agreement with experimental results, and the model using the tie-break method possesses two times faster calculation speed. Therefore, the numerical model based on the tie-break method would be beneficial to evaluate the strength of piping systems under seismic loadings.
Particle deposition on a semiconductor wafer larger than 100 mm was studied experimentally and numerically. Particularly the electrostatic effect on particle deposition velocity was investigated. The experimental apparatus consisted of a particle generation system, a particle deposition chamber and a wafer surface scanner. Experimental data of particle deposition velocity were obtained for a semiconductor wafer of 200 mm diameter with the applied voltage of 5,000 V and PSL particles of the sizes between 83 and 495 nm. The experimental data of particle deposition velocity were compared with the present numerical results and the existing experimental data for a 100 mm wafer by Ye et al. (1991) and Opiolka et al. (1994). The present numerical method took into consideration the particle transport mechanisms of convection, Brownian diffusion, gravitational settling and electrostatic attraction in an Eulerian frame of reference. Based on the comparison of the present experimental and numerical results with the existing experimental results the present experimental method for a 200 mm semiconductor wafer was found to be able to present reasonable data.
This paper describes an approach for the numerical analysis of container ship slamming and whipping and various parameters that influence slamming and whipping. For validation purposes, the numerical analysis results were compared with experimental results obtained as part of the Wave-Induced Loads on Ships Joint Industry Project. Water entry problems for two-dimensional (2D) sections were first solved using a 2D generalized Wagner model (GWM) for various drop conditions and geometries. As the next step, the hydroelastic numerical analysis of a 10,000-TEU container ship subjected to slamming and whipping loads in waves was performed. The analysis method used is based on a fully coupled model consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) Rankine panel model, a 3D finite element model (FEM), and a 2D GWM, which are strongly coupled in the time domain. Parametric studies were carried out in both numerical and experimental tests with various forward speeds, wave heights, and wave periods. The trends observed and the validity of the numerical analysis results are discussed.
The purpose of this study is to verify that the modified Lagrangian model can predict temperature, flow and scalar fields in the high temperature recirculation region of swirling confined diffusion flame. In the meantime numerical results from EBU and Equilibrium PDF models as well as experimental results are compared with those from the modified Lagrangian model. Adaption of three different turbulent models were accompanied with this procedure. Look-up table of the ignition characteristic time scale which is one of important factors of the Lagrangian model was referred to the 11-step reduced mechanism. Eventually, results with the Lagrangian model show a good accordance with experimental results, which shows the validity of this model. Results from Chen's model differ from those of the others. Numerical results of ${\widetilde{k}$ show significant deviation from experimental results for three models.

The purpose of this research is to develop high efficiency plastic plate heat exchangers which can be substituted for conventional aluminum plate heat exchangers. Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated: that is, flat plate type, turbulent promoter type, corrugate type and dimple type heat exchanger. The flat plate type is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulent promoter type is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulent promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. Numerical simulation is carried out using the FLUENT code. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type. The tendency of numerical simulation results is in good agreement with that of the experimental results.

The paper presents a numerical and experimental investigation on dynamic behaviors of a towed low tension cable. In the numerical study, an implicit finite difference algorithm is employed for three-dimensional cable equations. Fluid and geometric non-linearity and bending stiffness are considered and solved by Newton-Raphson iteration. Block tri-diagonal matrix method is applied for the fast calculation of the huge size of matrices. In order to verify the numerical results and to see real physical phenomena, an experiment is carried out for a 6m cable in a deep and long towing tank. The cable is towed in two different ways; one is towed at a constant speed and the other is towed at a constant speed with top end horizontal oscillations. Cable tension and shear forces are measured at the top end. Numerical and experimental results are compared with good agreements in most cases but with some differences in a few cases. The differences are due to drag coefficients caused by vortex shedding. In the numerical modeling, non-uniform element length needs to be employed to cope with the sharp variation of tension and shear forces at near top end.
