  • In this paper, the numerical wave propagation properties of the finite difference-time domain(FD-TD) method is investigated as a discrete model describing electromagnetic(EM) wave propagation phenomena. The leap-frog approximation of Maxwell's curl equations in time-space simulates EM wave propagation in terms of the numerical characteristic and the domain of dependence. A geometrical interpretation of the FD-TD numerical procedure is presented. The numerical dispersion error due to the leap-frog approximation and its dependence on the stability factor are illustrated. The FD-TD method using the leap-frog approximation is inherently a descriptive model. Thus, not only any physical picture about EM wave propagation phenomena can be drawn through this model, but also physical or engineering parameters in the frequency domain can be extracted from descriptive results. E-plane filter characteristics in the WR-28 rectangular waveguide and reflection property of an inductive iris in the WR-90 rectangluar waveguide extracted from simulation of the FD-TD model is included.

  • Numerous research papers have been accumulated due to the development and computerization of bibliometrics. This made it difficult to review all of the related papers published worldwide to conduct the study. However, due to the development of Natural language processing techniques, the tendency analysis of published research papers has become easier. In this study, text mining analysis using the statistical computing language R was carried out based on the bibliographic information of SCOPUS DB (Data Base) in the field of coastal and ocean engineering. As expected, the term 'wave' predominates, and it was confirmed that numerical analysis and hydraulic experiments were still dominant from the terms 'numerical model', 'numerical simulation', and 'experimental study'. In addition, recent use of the term 'wave energy' related to marine energy has been recognized. On the other hand, it was quantitatively confirmed that the frequency of connection between 'wave', and 'height' or 'energy' prevailed, and suggested the possibility of high resolution analysis by detailed field and period in the future.

  • In this paper, estimation angle performance analysis of amplitude-comparison monopulse radar under additive noise effect is dealt with. When uncorrelated white noises are added to the squinted beams, the angle estimation performance is analyzed through the mean square error(MSE). The numerical integration-based mean square error result completely overlaps the Monte Carlo-based mean square error result, which corresponds to 99.8% of the Monte Carlo-based mean square error result. In addition, the mean square error analysis method based on numerical integration has a much faster operation time than the mean square error method based on Monte Carlo. the angle estimation performance of the amplitude comparison monopulse radar can be efficiently analyzed in various noise environments through the proposed numerical integration-based mean square error method.

  • We build and analyze some types of queueing model to discuss capacity dimensioning of access links of a LAN interworking unit connected to the Internet backbone network. We assume that the IWU has a FIFO buffer to transmit IP packets to the Internet through the backbone. In order to analyze the system, we use a Poisson process and an MMPP process as input traffic models of IP packets and we use a general service time distribution as a service time model. But we use both an exponential service time and a deterministic service time in numerical examples for simple and efficient performance comparisons. As performance measures, we obtain the packet loss probability and the mean packet delay. We present some numerical results to show the effect of arrival rate, buffer size and link capacity on packet loss and mean delay.

  • Predicting the cellular location of an unknown protein gives a valuable information for inferring the possible function of the protein. For more accurate prediction system, we need a good feature extraction method that transforms the raw sequence data into the numerical feature vector, minimizing information loss. In this paper, we propose new methods of extracting underlying features only from the sequence data by computing pairwise sequence alignment scores. In addition, we use composition based features to improve prediction accuracy. To construct an SVM ensemble from separately trained SVM classifiers, we propose specificity based weighted majority voting. The overall prediction accuracy evaluated by the 5-fold cross-validation reached 88.53% for the eukaryotic animal data set. By comparing the prediction accuracy of various feature extraction methods, we could get the biological insight on the location of targeting information. Our numerical experiments confirm that our new feature extraction methods are very useful for predicting subcellular localization of proteins.

  • This research proposes a new strategy where documents are encoded into string vectors and modified version of k means algorithm to be adaptable to string vectors for text clustering. Traditionally, when k means algorithm is used for pattern classification, raw data should be encoded into numerical vectors. This encoding may be difficult, depending on a given application area of pattern classification. For example, in text clustering, encoding full texts given as raw data into numerical vectors leads to two main problems: huge dimensionality and sparse distribution. In this research, we encode full texts into string vectors, and modify the k means algorithm adaptable to string vectors for text clustering.

  • This research proposes a new neural network for text categorization which uses alternative representations of documents to numerical vectors. Since the proposed neural network is intended originally only for text categorization, it is called NTC (Neural Text Categorizer) in this research. Numerical vectors representing documents for tasks of text mining have inherently two main problems: huge dimensionality and sparse distribution. Although many various feature selection methods are developed to address the first problem, the reduced dimension remains still large. If the dimension is reduced excessively by a feature selection method, robustness of text categorization is degraded. Even if SVM (Support Vector Machine) is tolerable to huge dimensionality, it is not so to the second problem. The goal of this research is to address the two problems at same time by proposing a new representation of documents and a new neural network using the representation for its input vector.

  • This paper deals with the development of an interface program for automatic plate forming, which can exchange information between the heating line information generation program and the automatic heating apparatus. In this paper, the performance of the developed interface program has been verified from the view point of numerical position control. By applying the interface program to the operation of the automatic heating apparatus, an experiment of line heating has been conducted for several steel plate models. Based on the experimental results, a simplified relation to estimate angular distortion has keen derived as a natural characteristic of the present automatic heating apparatus. As a result of the present study, the prototype of the automatic plate forming system has been constructed, and its application to the real surface models found in the ship will be presented in the near future.
