Accurate Placement of Parieto-occipital Ventricular Catheter Using CT Parameters (CT 지표를 이용한 두정-후두부 뇌실 도관의 정확한 삽입)

  • Objective : placement of ventricular catheter is important to achieve long-term patency of the shunt system. We describe a method of calculating the insertion site, trajectory, and the length of the ventricular catheter using CT parameters in shunt surgery. Patients and Methods : These can be rapidly obtained using a caliper from a scout cut and two axial scans at lateral ventricular and upper 3rd ventricular level. To compare this technique with traditional one, we analyzed 40 consecutive patients who underwent shunt surgery. Results : Of 20 patients undergoing ventriculoperitoneal shunt insertion using this technique, none had poor location of the proximal catheter. In the counterpart, 9 patients had poor location(p=0.001). The number of patients who required revision surgery were also lower in the group using this technique, but it was not statistically significant (4 versus 2, p=0.422). Mean follow-up period was shorter in this technique group. Conclusion : This technique provides an accurate placement of the proximal catheter without special instrument or additional expenses.

Direction Augmented Probabilistic Scan Matching for Reliable Localization (신뢰성 높은 위치 인식을 위하여 방향을 고려한 확률적 스캔 매칭 기법)

  • The scan matching is widely used in localization and mapping of mobile robots. This paper presents a probabilistic scan matching method. To improve the performance of the scan matching, a direction of data point is incorporated into the scan matching. The direction of data point is calculated using the line fitted by the neighborhood data. Owing to the incorporation, the performance of the matching was improved. The number of iterations in the scan matching decreased, and the tolerance against a high rotation between scans increased. Based on real data of a laser range finder, experiments verified the performance of the proposed direction augmented probabilistic scan matching algorithm.

  • Decapsulation of EMC(Epoxy Molding Compound) in package device is a method used to inspect inside of device by removing plastic molding. So far, chemical etching and mechanical grinding methods have been used widely. Recently, several works using laser have been carried out. This method has advantages with fast process time and precision than conventional methods because of noncontact process. Also, laser process is a clean process because of removing EMC directly without using toxic chemicals. The wavelength of laser used in this study is 355nm. Key parameters of removing EMC are laser power, scan speed, and number of scans of laser. It if confirmed that laser decapsulation is a useful process to inspect inside a device with a small thermal damage to chip surface.

  • Radiological analysis of chest lesions detected on chest radiographs or CT scans begins with their classification into parenchymal, pleural, or extrapleural lesions according to their presumed origin. The mediastinum is divided anatomically into the anterior, middle, and posterior mediastinal compartments, and localizing a mediastinal mass to one of these divisions can facilitate their differential diagnosis. A differential diagnosis of a mediastinal mass is usually based on a number of findings, including its location; the structure from which it is arising; whether it is single, multifocal (involving several different areas or lymph node groups), or diffuse; its size and shape; its attenuation (fatty, fluid, soft-tissue, or a combination of these); the presence of calcification along with its characteristics and amount; and its opacification following the administration of contrast agents.

  • Laser forming is an advanced process in sheet metal forming in which thermal stress originated from the laser heat source is used to shape the metal sheet. However, substantial waiting time is normally necessary for the workpiece to cool down between consecutive scans so that a steep temperature gradient can be reestablished in the next scan. In order to solve this drawback, laser bending characteristics are experimentally implemented in underwater condition. Laser forming effects under various conditions, including different laser power, scanning velocity, beam diameter, number of passes and material, are investigated. The results show that the underwater laser forming facilitates deliberate forming. The bending angle per respective laser scan is decreased with increasing the number of passes and scanning velocity.

  • Laser scanners are widely used for reverse engineering and inspection of freeform parts in industry such as motors, electronic products, dies and molds. Due to the lack of measuring software and positioning device, the laser scanning processes have been erroneous and inconsistent. In order to automate measuring processes, an automated scan plan generation software and a proprietary hardware are developed. In this paper, an automated laser scanning system using a 3-axis motorized stage is proposed. In the scan planning step, scan directions, paths, and the number of scans are generated considering optical and mechanical parameters. In the scanning step, the generated scan plan is downloaded into the laser scanner and the motorized stage and the points on the surface are captured automatically. Finally, the point data set is analyzed to evaluate the performance of the system.

  • The Coronary Artery Calcium Data and Reporting System (CAC-DRS) is a standardized reporting method for calcium scoring on computed tomography. CAC-DRS is applied on a per-patient basis and represents the total calcium score with the number of vessels involved. There are 4 risk categories ranging from CAC-DRS 0 to CAC-DRS 3. CAC-DRS also provides risk prediction and treatment recommendations for each category. The main strengths of CAC-DRS include a detailed and meaningful representation of CAC, improved communication between physicians, risk stratification, appropriate treatment recommendations, and uniform data collection, which provides a framework for education and research. The major limitations of CAC-DRS include a few missing components, an overly simple visual approach without any standard reference, and treatment recommendations lacking a basis in clinical trials. This consistent yet straightforward method has the potential to systemize CAC scoring in both gated and non-gated scans.

Machining of Diamond Films with Copper Vapor Laser (구리증기레이저를 이용한 다이아몬드막의 가공)

  • Cutting and planarization of diamond films have been performed using copper vapor laser under air at-mosphere. Diamond films of about 350${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 800 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ thick have been synthesized with DC plasma assisted chemical vapor deposition. The position of a specimen has been controlled by computer-driven stage. With copper vapor laser beam of 7W cutting depth increases rapidly and saturates with increasing scan number and decreasing scan speed. 8 repetitive scans at scan speed 0.5 mm/sec produce the maximum cutting depth without focus shifting Rod-shape copper vapor laser beam can be made and used effectively in planar-ization of rough diamond surface.

  • To evaluate the usefulness of pediatric chest CT scans by comparing the dose, examination time, and image quality by applying Helical mode, High-pitch mode, and Volume Axial mode to minimize the radiation exposure and obtain high diagnostic value. Revolution (GE Healthcare, Wisconsin USA) was used to divide PBU-70 phantom into Helical mode, High-pitch mode, and Volume Axial mode. After acquiring images, ROI is set for each image, heart, bone, lung, and back-ground air, and the average value is obtained by measuring CT number (HU) and noise (SD). SNR and CNR were measured and compared with DLP values provided directly by the equipment. Determining statistical significance Statistical analysis was performed using ONE-WAY-ANAOVA using SPSS 21.0. In this experiment, it was possible to inspect at a short time without deterioration of image quality with the lowest dose when using volume axial mode. Although the detector coverage of 16 cm is limited to all pediatric chest CT scans, it is recommended to be actively used in pediatric patients, and further study is needed to apply other test sites in volume axial mode.

Reduction in Sample Size Using Topological Information for Monte Carlo Localization

  • Monte Carlo localization is known to be one of the most reliable methods for pose estimation of a mobile robot. Much research has been done to improve performance of MCL so far. Although MCL is capable of estimating the robot pose even for a completely unknown initial pose in the known environment, it takes considerable time to give an initial estimate because the number of random samples is usually very large especially for a large-scale environment. For practical implementation of the MCL, therefore, a reduction in sample size is desirable. This paper presents a novel approach to reducing the number of samples used in the particle filter for efficient implementation of MCL. To this end, the topological information generated off- line using a thinning method, which is commonly used in image processing, is employed. The topological map is first created from the given grid map for the environment. The robot scans the local environment using a laser rangefinder and generates a local topological map. The robot then navigates only on this local topological edge, which is likely to be the same as the one obtained off- line from the given grid map. Random samples are drawn near the off-line topological edge instead of being taken with uniform distribution, since the robot traverses along the edge. In this way, the sample size required for MCL can be drastically reduced, thus leading to reduced initial operation time. Experimental results using the proposed method show that the number of samples can be reduced considerably, and the time required for robot pose estimation can also be substantially decreased.
