Based on a set of performance plots relating the design variables to the imposed conditions, an easy-to-use and versatile design procedure for chevron-type multipass plate heat exchangers is developed. In order for the present procedure to cover multipass with unequal passes and non-unity ratio of heat capacity rate, each stream number of transfer unit is adopted as the basic design variable instead of the exchanger number of transfer unit. It is found that there exists a unique relation between the stream and exchanger number of transfer units regardless of the chevron angle and the plate length. In addition, for a given value of the pressure drop the heat transfer area per unit mass flow rate can be expressed in terms of the stream number of transfer unit only. These two relationships in the form of simple plots constitute the framework of design. The sample results in comparison with the available data indicate that the present procedure includes the previous ones as a subset, and that every design method is affected essentially by the selection of specific correlations for the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor.
Since a typical plate heat exchanger is made up of a huge number of unitary cells, it may be impossible to predict the aero-thermal performance of the full scale heat exchanger through three-dimensional numerical simulation due to the enormous amount of computing resources and time required. In the present study, a simple flow-network model using the friction factor correlation and a thermal-network model based on the effectiveness-number of transfer units (${\varepsilon}$-NTU) method has been developed. The complicated flow pattern inside the cross-corrugated heat exchanger has been modeled into flow and thermal networks. Using this model, the heat transfer between neighboring streams can be considered, and the pressure drop and the heat transfer rate of full-scale heat exchanger matrix are calculated. In the calculation, the aero-thermal performance of each unitary cell of the heat exchanger matrix was evaluated using correlations of the Fanning friction factor f and the Nusselt number Nu, which were calculated by unitary-cell CFD model.
This computational study examines the augmentation of classic 2-D Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ convection by the addition of periodically-spaced transverse fins. The fins are attached to the heated base of the cavity and serve to partition the cavity into 'units' with different aspect ratios. The respective impacts upon heat transfer of the fin configuration parameters - including spacing, height, thickness and thermal conductivity - are systematically examined through numerical simulations for a range of laminar Rayleigh numbers (0 < Ra < $2{\times}10^5$) and reported in terms of an average Nusselt number. The selection of the low Rayleigh number regime is linked to likely scenarios within aerospace applications (e.g. avionics cooling) where the cavity length scale and/or gravitational acceleration is small. The net heat transfer augmentation is found to result from a combination of competing fin effects, most of which are hydrodynamic in nature. Heat transfer enhancement of up to $1.2{\times}$ that for a Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ cavity without fins was found to occur under favorable fin configurations. Such configurations are generally characterized by short, thin fins with half-spacings somewhat less than the convection cell diameter from classic Rayleigh-$B{\acute{e}}nard$ theory. In contrast, for unfavorable configurations, it is found that the introduction of fins can result in a significant reduction in the heat transfer performance.

Alternating polyols of oxymethylene and oxyalkylene were synthesized and used as precursors for thermoplastic poly(ether-ester) elastomers (TPEs). The polyols were synthesized by reacting diols having different methylene units with dichloromethane in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. The number of methylene units in the alkylene oxides was varied from 3 to 6. TPEs were prepared using the polyols as soft segments and poly(butylene terephthalate) units as hard segments. The polyols and TPEs synthesized were characterized using FTIR, NMR, GPC, DSC, and polarized optical microscopy. The polyols showed a profound odd-even effect on the melting (T$_{m}$) and glass transition temperatures (T$_{g}$). Polyols with odd numbers of methylene groups in the alkylene units have higher transition temperatures than polyols with odd number of methylene groups. The tendency is still kept in TPEs, even though the T$_{g}$ of soft segment in TPEs are slightly higher than those of corresponding neat polyols. The T$_{m}$ and T$_{g}$ of soft segments are almost constant in the range of 20 to 60 wt % contents of soft segments. On the other hand, the normalized heat of fusion of hard segment decreased with increasing the content of loft segment.ent.t.ent.
Background/Aims: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has modified the activities of endoscopy units worldwide. Herein, we investigated the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on anesthesiologist assistance for endoscopic procedures in Lombardy, Italy. Methods: A questionnaire concerning anesthesiologist assistance provided from October 26 to December 6, 2020, in comparison with the same period in 2019, was sent to endoscopic units in Lombardy. Results: Approximately 54% (34/63) of the units responded. A reduction in the number of all endoscopies (-33.5%; 18792 in 2020 vs. 28264 in 2019) and anesthesiologist-assisted endoscopies (-15.3%; 2652 in 2020 vs. 3132 in 2019) was reported. A greater reduction in anesthesiologist assistance was observed in government community units (-29.5%) than in academic (-14%) and private community units (-4.6%). Among all units, 85% reported a reduction in anesthesiologist assistance; 65% observed a delay/cancellation of procedures; 59%, a restricted patient selection; 17%, the need to transfer some patients to other hospitals; and 32%, a related worsening of procedure quality. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic compromised the anesthesiologist assistance for endoscopic procedures in Lombardy, which worsened the procedure quality mainly in government community units. The COVID-19 "stress test" suggests a more balanced allocation of anesthesiologic resources in the future.
Among the heat/mass exchange units composing an absorption system, the absorber, where the refrigerant vapor is absorbed into the liquid solution is the one least understood. In the present study, the effects of non-absorbable gas on the absorption process of aqueous lithium bromide solution falling film inside a vertical tube were experimentally investigated. In the range of film Reynolds number of 30 ~ 195, heat and mass transfer characteristics were investigated as a function of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration, 0.2 ~ 20%. An increase of non-absorbable gas volumetric concentration degraded the mass transfer rate dramatically in the absorption process. The reduction of mass transfer rate was significant for the addition of small amount of non-absorbable gas to the pure vapor. At film Reynolds number of 130, an increase of non-absorbable gas concentration from 0.2 to 6.0% resulted in the decrease of mass transfer rate by 36% and 20% of non-absorbable gas by 59%. However the decrease of film Nusselt number with the increase of volumetric concentration of non absorbable gas was relatively smaller than the decrease of Sherwood number. Critical film Reynolds number was identified to exist for the maximum heat and mass transfer regardless of the volumetric concentration of non-absorbable gases.

A simple and effective method for improving Euclidean norm condition number for chemical processing system is presented. The singular value sensitivities of Freudenberg et al. (1982) is used to estimate the behavior of singular values of process transfer function matrix when design parameter is changed, then the condition number can be calculated straightforwardly. The method requires explicit dependencies of each transfer function matrix elements on design parameters. These dependencies can be obtained either by symbolic differentiation in the form of explicit function of design parameters, or by numerical perturbation studies for units with large and complicated models. Gerschgorin-type lower bound for minimum singular value is introduced to detect the large divergencies near singular point due to linearity of sensitivities. The case studies are performed to show the efficiency of the proposed method.
The simple and precise model for the estimation of rain acidity from the ambient air quality was developed using the theory of wet scrubber and the chemical equilibria of $SO_2, CO_2, and H_2O$ system. From the measured mixing height, and from the developed relationship between NTU (=number of transfer units) and the concentration of $SO_2$(aq) in rain drops, the HTU (= height equivalent to one transfer unit, i.e. mass transfer resistance) was estimated, and validated with the field-measured data. In Seoul, Korea where the effect of $SO_2$ on rainfall acidity is as high as 84% and the average mixing height is 1 km, the average HTU of $SO_2$ system was found to be 191.5m. The important parameters affecting HTU were identified as rainfall intensity and initial ambient concentration of $SO_2$, and their effects on the value of overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient were quantified.
This research is to numerically investigate the convective cooling performance in the Disk brake. Research concentrates on the heat transfer coefficient and cooling performance which are selected with cooling local locations. Cooling performance of the Hole disk has been compared by Ventilated Disk. According to the results of heat transfer on the disk brake, activated velocity distributions more appear in the Hole disk. This is due to the fact that a number of hole units have exactly 120 on the surface of the hole disk. Therefore, velocity distributions of hole disk brake is better activated than Ventilated disk. According to the calculations of Nusselt number between surface and atmosphere in the interested cooling area, average value of cooling effect has been increased 13.5% by the hole disk at driving of speed 65 km/h situation and grown 18% by the hole disk at driving speed of 100 km/h. Due to the flow of air through the hole route, cooling performance of the hole disk was very excellent. In addition, cooling effect on edge of the bottom is better than the vicinity of center.
It is essential to reduce the amount of fossil fuel because facing with the natural problem such as a global warming. To achieve this goal, many of interests in the use of renewable energy is growing. Especially, as one of these renewable energy systems, a solar air heater invention has been conducted for enhancing the efficiency of solar air heater. According to this trend, scale-down sized experiment apparatus was constructed and performed for searching a proper fin and confirming the heat transfer performance by fin shape on constant heat condition to enhance efficiency of solar air heater. In this experiment, heat gain, convection heat transfer coefficient, number of transfer units, Nusselt number, Reynold's number, friction factor, performance factor were investigated in order to evaluate the thermal characteristics based on the real data obtained. By comparison with the each fin performance, a zigzag shape keeping a right angle to the plate had the highest value among them.
