The magnetic domain walls at the edges of a large patterned and exchanged-biased NiO(10-60 nm)/NiFe(10 nm) bilayers and their motions with applied field were investigated by magnetic force microscopy. Three kinds of domain walls, namely, head-to-head zig-zag and tail-to-tail zig-zag Bloch walls and straight Neel walls were found at specific edges of the unidirectional biased NiO(30 nm)/NiFe(10 nm) bilayer having the exchange biasing field (H$\sub$ex/) of 21 Oe. No walls were observed for the strong exchange-biased bilayer (60 nm NiO, H$\sub$ex/ = 75 Oe), while the amplitude of the zig-zag domain increased with decreasing exchange biasing. This may be explained by mutual restraint between H$\sub$ex/ and the demagnetization field of edge. We similarly investigated the magnetization reversal process, the subsequent motion of the walls and identified the pinning and nucleation sites during reversal.

We discuss the structural and optical characteristics of GaN nanowires (NWs) grown on Si(111) substrates by a plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. The GaN NWs with high crystal quality were formed by adopting a new growth approach, so called Ga pre-deposition (GaPD) method. In the GaPD, only Ga was supplied without nitrogen flux on a SiN/Si surface, resulting in the formation of Ga droplets. The Ga droplets were used as initial nucleation sites for the growth of GaN NWs. The GaN NWs with the average heights of 60.10 to 214.62 nm obtained by increasing growth time. The hexagonal-shaped top surfaces and facets were observed from the field-emission electron microscope images of GaN NWs, indicating that the NWs have the wurtzite (WZ) crystal structure. Strong peaks of GaN (0002) corresponding to WZ structures were also observed from double crystal x-ray diffraction rocking curves of the NW samples. At room temperature, free-exciton emissions were observed from GaN NWs with narrow linewidth broadenings, indicating to the formation of high-quality NWs.
Extruded Mg-Bi binary alloys are known to have an undesirable bimodal grain structure containing a large amount of coarse unrecrystallized grains. Accordingly, to improve the microstructural homogeneity of extruded Mg-Bi alloys, it is necessary to promote the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) behavior during hot extrusion. An effective way to promote DRX is an increase in nucleation sites for DRX through a pre-deformation process before extrusion, such as cold pre-forging and hot pre-compression. However, the application of these pre-deformation processes increases the cost of final extruded Mg products because of an increase in energy consumption and decrease in productivity. Therefore, a low-cost new continuous process with high productivity is required to improve the microstructural homogeneity and mechanical properties of extruded Mg alloys without a drastic increase in the entire process cost. This study proposes a new extrusion method using an extrusion billet with a truncated cone shape (i.e., tapered billet) instead of a conventional extrusion billet with a cylindrical shape. When the hot extrusion of a Mg-5Bi alloy is conducted using the tapered billet, the DRX behavior during extrusion is considerably promoted. The DRX fraction and average grain size of the extruded alloy significantly increase and decrease from 65% to 91% and from 225 ㎛ to 49 ㎛, respectively. Consequently, the extruded Mg-5Bi alloy fabricated using the tapered billet has a finer homogeneous grain structure and higher tensile elongation than the extruded counterpart fabricated using the cylindrical billet.

In this study, effects of alloying elements on the sticking occurring during hot rolling of five kinds of ferritic STS430J1L stainless steels were investigated by analyzing high-temperature hardness and oxidation behavior of the rolled steels. Hot-rolling simulation tests were conducted by a high-temperature wear tester which could simulate actual hot rolling. The simulation test results revealed that the sticking process proceeded with three stages, i.e., nucleation, growth, and saturation. Since the hardness continuously decreased as the test temperature increased, whereas the formation of Fe-Cr oxides in the rolled steel surface region increased, the sticking of five stainless steels was evaluated by considering both the high-temperature hardness and oxidation effects. The addition of Zr, Cu, or Si had a beneficial effect on the sticking resistance, while the Ni addition did not show any difference in the sticking. Particularly in the case of the Si addition, Si oxides formed first in the initial stage of high-temperature oxidation, worked as initiation sites for Fe-Cr oxides, accelerated the formation of Fe-Cr oxides, and thus raised the sticking resistance by about 10 times in comparison with the steel without Si content.
$Cr_2O_3/AP$ (ammonium perchlorate) energetic composites were prepared by a method of solvent/anti-solvent. XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline structure of AP in $Cr_2O_3/AP$ composites is the same as that of pure AP. SEM photomicrograph shows that an average size of cuboid $Cr_2O_3/AP$ composites is approximately $2.5{\mu}m$. TGA analysis shows that the addition of submicron $Cr_2O_3$ particles into AP lowers the HTD (high-temperature decomposition) compared to that of neat AP and the activation energy of the $Cr_2O_3/AP$ composites was calculated by the isoconversional Starlink method. Considering changes in the activation energy, the decomposition reaction mechanism of AP was suggested as follows; the decomposition with the formation of nucleation sites renders formation of porous structure in the composites up to conversion of about 0.25 and after further conversion of over 0.3, it seems that decomposition reaction vigorously takes place rather than sublimation of AP.
The microstructure and positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) characteristics of 0.1 mol%$Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ doped $0.94BaTiO_3-0.06(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ (BBNT-NT001) ceramics sintered at various temperatures from $1200^{\circ}C$ to $1350^{\circ}C$ were investigated in order to develop eco-friendly PTCR thermistors with a high Curie temperature ($T_C$). Resulting thermistors showed a perovskite structure with a tetragonal symmetry. When sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$, the specimen had a uniform microstructure with small grains. However, abnormally grown grains started to appear at $1250^{\circ}C$ and a homogeneous microstructure with large grains was exhibited when the sintering temperature reached $1325^{\circ}C$. When the temperature exceeded $1325^{\circ}C$, the grain growth was inhibited due to the numerous nucleation sites generated at the extremely high temperature. It is considered that $Na_2Ti_6O_{13}$ is responsible for the grain growth of the $0.94BaTiO_3-0.06(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$) ceramics by forming a liquid phase during the sintering at around $1300^{\circ}C$. The grain growth of the BBNT-NT001 ceramics was significantly correlated with a decrease of resistivity. All the specimens were observed to have PTCR characteristics except for the sample sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. The BBNT-NT001 ceramics had significantly decreased $\tilde{n}_{rt}$ and increased resistivity jump with increasing sintering temperature at from $1200^{\circ}C$ to $1325^{\circ}C$. Especially, the BBNT-NT001 ceramics sintered at $1325^{\circ}C$ exhibited superior PTCR characteristics of low resistivity at room temperature ($122\;{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$), high resistivity jump ($1.28{\times}10^4$), high resistivity temperature factor (20.4%/$^{\circ}C$), and a high Tc of $157.9^{\circ}C$.

The variation of the hydrogen-storage properties of Mg contained in the mechanically-allyed mixture with the weight percentage of nickel in the sample is investigated. The weight percentage of nickel transformed into the Mg2Ni phase, on the basis of the nickel weight, is highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. For the first hydriding cycle, the effect of mechanical alloying on the hydriding rate of Mg is highest in the Mg-25 wt.%Ni sample. After activation, the effects of mechanical alloying and hydriding-dehydriding cycling on the hydriding rate of Mg are highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. After sufficient hydriding-dehydriding cycling, the effects on the hydrogen-storage capacity of Mg are highest in the Mg-10 wt.%Ni sample. The effects on the hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg are highest in the Mg-25wt.%Ni sample. Mg-25wt.%Ni, followed by Mg-10 wt.%Ni, is the optimum composition which has the best effects on the hydrogen-storage properties of Mg contained in the sample. The mechanical alloying and the hydriding-dehydriding cycling produce many defects, which can act as active nucleation sites, and increase the specific surface area, shortening the diffusion distance of hydrogen.

In this study, nano-sized C-S-H crystals were synthesized using the liquid phase reaction method and their properties were investigated. The synthesized C-S-H crystals were added to the cement composite in suspension form to determine their effect on the hydration properties of the cement. The amount of chemical admixture was varied to obtain nano-sized C-S-H crystals with optimal agglomerated morphology, and SEM photographs were analyzed. A cleaning process was added to remove harmful substances other than the synthesiz ed C-S-H crystals. It was found that the concentration of harmful substances was reduced in the case of C-S-H crystals subjected to the cleaning process. The synthesized C-S-H suspensions were prepared with and without the cleaning process, and cement composites were prepared with the cement weight content as the main variable. The effect of C-S-H crystals on the initial hydration properties of the cement was confirmed by microhydration heat analysis. In addition, mortar specimens were prepared to measure the compressive strength over time. The test results showed that the nano-sized C-S-H crystals act as nucleation sites in the cement paste to promote the early hydration of the cement and increase the early compressive strength.
The lipids of milk provide energy and many essential nutrients for the newborn animal. They also have distinctive physical properties that affect the processing of dairy products. Milk fat globules mainly consist of neutral lipids like triacylglycerols, whereas the globule membranes contain the complex lipids mostly, Phospholipids are a small but important fraction of the milk lipids and are found mainly in the milk fat globule membrane and other membranous material in the skim-milk phase. The milk fats of ruminant animals are characterized by the presence of relatively high concentrations of short-chain fatty acids, especially butyric and hexanoic acids, which are rarely found in milks of non-ruminants. The fatty acids of milk lipids arise from de novo synthesis in the mammary gland and uptake from the circulating blood. The fatty acid compositions of milks are usually complex and distinctive, depending on the nature of the fatty acids synthesized de novo in the mammary gland and those received from the diet in each species. The content and composition of milks from different species vary widely; presumably, these are evolutionary adaptations to differing environments. The actual process by which these globules are formed is unkonwn, but there are indications that triglyceride-containing vesicles which bleb from endoplasmic reticulum may serve as nucleation sites for globules. Recent studies on milk have centred on the manipulation of milk lipids to increase specific fatty acids, i.e. 20-carbon omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid 20:5n3, decosahexaenoic acid 22:6n3) from marine sources because the fatty acids are closely associated with a decreased risk of coronary heart disease.
