Growth form and surface morphology of NYAB single crystal grown by TSSG technique using a K2O/3MoOS/0.5B203 flux was investigated. In the crystal grown from <100> or <120> seed, prismatic and (101) faces were well developed with different size each other. (001) face was also developed in the crystal grown from <001> seed. While growth hillocks were observed on the prismatic face of the crystal grown from <100> seed, surface striations parallel to neighbor (101) faces were formed on that face of the crystal grown from <001> seed. The (101) faces were grown by two dimensional nucleation growth. (001) face which was developed at slow growth velocity of [001] direction was grown by screw dislocation Anisotropy of growth velocity as to seed orientation affected on crystal morphology and surface morphology.
The crystallization behaviors of slag-based glass in $CaO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2(-Na_2O)$ system have been studied. The mother glass containing 16.50 CaO, 7.50MgO, 19.70Al2O3, 50.80SiO3 and 2.09wt% $Na_2O$ was prepared by using Korean domestic raw materials such as granulated slag, serpentine, sea sand and etc. The glass-ceramics composed of major crystalline phase diopside was produced by the heat treatment in a temperature range from 850$^{\circ}$ to 9$25^{\circ}C$ for 0-6hr. The composition and morphology of diopside phase formed in the system were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and electron microscopy. The kinetic measurements such as J.M. A plot and Arrhenius plot indicated that the process of nucleation of the initially formed diopside phase could be described from the view point of instantaneous nucleation. It was also demonstrated that the linear crystal growth of diopside phase was proceeded by short range diffusion of $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The microstructures of the resulting glass-ceramics were consisted of leafroidal shaped crystalline aggregations.
The effect of grain size on corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation behavior was studied in 22Cr-15Ni-5W super austenitic stainless steels for desulfurization equipment as a heat power station. In the high temperature oxidation test, oxidation rate was increased as the temperature increased from $600^{\circ}C\;to\;800^{\circ}C$. In vapor, oxidation rate was faster than that in air. Because the vapor was inhibited nucleation of $Cr_2O_3$ film. And the high temperature oxidation resistance at $600^{\circ}C{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ was excellent from all specimens and specimen of the smallest grain size was the most excellent. Because increasing of diffusion course through the grain-boundary was promoted nucleation and growth of $Cr_2O_3$ film. In the test temperature at $600^{\circ}C{\sim}800^{\circ}C$, Cr rich round particle oxide was formed in air, whereas Fe rich needle type oxide was developed in vapor.

Bioactive titanium metal can be prepared by simple 5M-NaOH treatment and subsuquent heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ to form an amorphous sodium titanate on its surface. In the present study, mechanism of apatite formation on the titanium metal was investigated by examining its surface compositional and structural changes in a simulated body fluid. The apatite formation on the metal was found to proceed in the sequence of 1)$Na^+$ ion release from the sodium titanate to form hydrated titania abundant in Ti-OH groups, 2) early and selective binding of calcium ions with the Ti-OH groups to form a calcium titanate, and 3) late binding of phosphate ions to make apatite nucleation and growth. This indicates that Ti-OH groups do not directly induce the apatite nucleation, but via formation of a calcium titanate.
It is well Down that the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using a transition metal catalyst is greatly enhanced in a nitrogen environment. We show here that the enhanced growth is closely related to the activated nitrogen and it's incorporation into the CNT wall and cap during growth. This behavior is consistent with theoretical calculations of CNx thin films, showing that nitrogen incorporation to the graphitic basal plane reduces the elastic strain energy for curving the graphitic layer. Enhanced CNT growth by nitrogen incorporation is thus due to a decrease in the activation energies required for nucleation and growth of the tubular graphitic layer.
The ratio of aniline dimer (p-aminodiphenylamine), which is a nucleation site of chain growth in a chemical polymerization of aniline monomer, to aniline monomer was controlled to synthesize polyaniline with the molecular weight ($M_w$) between 10000 and 20000 g/mol. The result of OCP measurement showed that the reaction rate of polymerization was increased as the mole ratio of dimer was increased. The increase in the molar ratio of dimer resulted in the shift of absorption wavelength of polyaniline to the short wavelength region on measurement of UV/Vis and the decrease of molecular weight on the measurement of GPC.

Nitride films such as TiN, CrN etc. deposited on glass by PVD processes have been developed for many industrial applications. These nitride films deposited on glass were widely used for not only decorative and optical coatings but also wear and corrosion resistance coatings employed as dies and molds made of glass for the example of lens forming molds. However, the major problem of nitride coatings on glass by PVD process is non-uniform film owing to pin-hole and micro crack. It is estimated that nonuniform coating is influenced by a different surface energy between metal nitrides and glass due to binding states. In this work, therefore, for the evaluation of nucleation and growth mechanism of nitride films on glass TiN and CrN film were synthesized on glass with various nitrogen partial pressure by unbalanced magnetron sputtering. Prior to deposition, for the examination of relationship between surface energy and film microstructure plasma pre-treatment process was carried out with various argon to hydrogen flow rate and substrate bias voltage, duty cycle and frequency by using pulsed DC power supply. Surface energy owing to the different plasma pre-treatment was calculated by the measurement of wetting angle and surface conditions of glass were investigated by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) and Atomic Force Microscope(AFM). The microstructure change of nitride films on glass with increase of film thickness were analyzed by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).

From the formation of the monodispersed silica particle which is a valuable for the industry by Sol-Gel process, the effects of the parameters participated in the process, the growth mechanism and the characteristics of silica particles for each rection conditions are investigated. To investigate about the formation of final silica particles, the suspension which performs the polymerization is reacted with molybdic acid, and the evolutions of TEOS and silica particle size are investigated in the reaction time ? 새 the characteristics of molybdic acid with the suspension. From the results, a constant number of silica particle is formed at early reaction stage. Silica particles grow through the aggregation of smaller particles and nucleation is rate-limiting step for the growth of particles. In the conditions of this study, spherical silica particles are formed, [NH$_3$] and [$H_2O$] concentration increase the particle size but particle size decrease with [$H_2O$] concentration which is a certain above region. Average particle sizes are 187.4~483.3 nm and standard deviations in the average particle size are 1.7~2.9% with each experimental condition. From the BET results, specific surface area is 5.5~23.4 $m^2$/g and these values decrease with increase size. The average pore size is 50~70$\AA$.
Growth characteristics of methane-propane clathrate hydrate, growing under different undercooling conditions, was investigated. After the water within pressurized vessel was fully saturated with guest gas molecules by agitation, medium was rapidly undercooled and maintained at the constant temperature. The growth of hydrate was always Initiated with film formations at the upper bounding surface of liquid pool. The visual observation using microscope revealed detailed features of subsequent crystal nucleation, migration, growth and interference occurring within liquid pool. A number of small crystals ascended and settled at the hydrate film. When undercooling was small $({\Delta}T=3.2K)$, some of the settled crystals slowly grew into faceted columns. As the undercooling increased, the downward growth of crystals underneath the hydrate film became dendritic and occurred with greater rate and with finer arm spacing. The shapes of the floating crystals were diverse and included octahedron and triangular or hexagonal platelet When the undercooling was small, the octahedral crystals were found dominant. As the undercooling increased, the shape of the floating crystals also became dendritic. The detailed characteristics of floating crystals were reported in this study.

On poly and single crystalline Cu substrates, the graphene was synthesized by chemical vapor deposition(CVD). Optical microscopic images which were not possible to show the detailed characterization of graphene growth were adjusted and analyzed using image analyzing software. As a result it was possible to show the detailed growth mechanism of graphene by utilizing the image analysis. Nucleation of graphene on Cu grain boundary and its growth behavior into Cu grain are shown. In addition, the movement of graphene grain boundary interacting with Cu grain boundary and pinholes during growth was illustrated in detail, and the cause and result are discussed as a result of those interactions.
