Study of flow behavior within rod bundles has been an active topic. Surface modification technologies are important parts of the design of the fourth generation reactor, which can increase the strength of the secondary flow within the rod bundle lattices. Quasi-periodic large-scale vortex structure (QLVS) is introduced by arranging micro ribs on the surface of rod bundles, which enhanced the scale of the secondary flow between the rod bundle lattices. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and water experiments, the flow field distribution and drag coefficient of the rod-bundle lattices are studied. The secondary flow between the micro-ribbed rod-bundle lattice is significantly enhanced compared to the standard rod-bundle lattice. The numerical simulation results agree well with the experimental results.
The control rod worth sensitivity to the neutron detector position in the rod drop experiment is studied by the time-dependent Monte Carlo (TDMC) neutron transport calculations for AGN-201K educational reactor and the Kyoto University Critical Assembly. The TDMC simulations of the rod drop experiments are conducted by the Seoul National University Monte Carlo (MC) code, McCARD, yielding time-dependent neutron densities at detector positions. The detector-position-dependent results of the total control rod worth calculated by the extrapolation, the integral counting, and the inverse methods are compared with the numerical reference using the MC eigenvalue calculations and the experimental results. From these comparisons, it is observed that the total control rod worth can be estimated with a considerable difference depending on the detector position through the rod drop experiment. The proposed TDMC simulation of the rod drop experiment can be applied for searching a better detector position or quantifying a bias for the control rod worth measurement.
The fuel rod performance has great importance for the safety and economy of an operating reactor. The fuel rod performance analysis code, which considers the thermal-mechanical response and irradiation effects of fuel rod, is usually developed in order to predict fuel rod performance accurately. The FRIPAC (${\underline{F}}uel$${\underline{R}}od$${\underline{I}}ntegral$${\underline{P}}erformance$${\underline{A}}nalysis$${\underline{C}}ode$) is such a fuel rod performance analysis code that has been developed recently by China Nuclear Power Technology Research Institute Co. Ltd. The code aims at the computational simulation of the Pressurized Water Reactor fuel rod behavior for both steady-state and power ramp condition. A brief overview of FRIPAC is presented including the computational framework and the main behavioral models. Validation of the code is also presented and it focuses on the fuel rod behavior including fuel center temperature, fission gas release, rod internal pressure/internal void volume, cladding outer diameter and cladding corrosion thickness. The validation is based on experimental data from several international projects. The validation results indicate that FRIPAC is an accurate and reliable fuel rod performance analysis code because of the satisfactory comparison results between the experimental measurements and the code predictions.
The control rod worth is a key safety parameter required to be measured in commercial pressurized water reactors (PWRs). Conventionally, the control rod worth is measured after reaching the critical state, which occupies the considerable time in the zero-power physics test. In this study, an efficient control-rod worth measurement technique has been proposed based on the improved neutron-source multiplication method, which can be implemented with the source-range detector count rates in the subcritical states. Moreover, the noise reduction technique has been adopted to smooth the large fluctuation existing in the original signals. In order to verify the engineering performance of the proposed measurement technique, the measured source-range detector count rates during the rod withdrawal process before reaching critical state in a CNP1000 reactor have been employed. It demonstrated that almost all estimated results of control rod worth satisfy the engineering acceptance criteria, except one control rod with the relative difference over 10 %, which indicates the capability of the proposed method in estimating control rod worth.
In this paper, a deformation measurement technology for nuclear fuel rods is proposed. The deformation measurement system includes a high-definition CMOS image sensor, a lens, a semiconductor laser line beam marker, and optical and mechanical accessories. The basic idea of the proposed deformation measurement system is to illuminate the outer surface of a fuel rod with a collimated laser line beam at an angle of 45 degrees or higher. For this method, it is assumed that a nuclear fuel rod and the optical axis of the image sensor for observing the rod are vertically composed. The relative motion of the fuel rod in the horizontal direction causes the illuminated laser line beam to move vertically along the surface of the fuel rod. The resulting change of the laser line beam position on the surface of the fuel rod is imaged as a parabolic beam in the high-definition CMOS image sensor. An ellipse model is then extracted from the parabolic beam pattern. The center coordinates of the ellipse model are taken as the feature of the deformed fuel rod. The vertical offset of the feature point of the nuclear fuel rod is derived based on the displacement of the offset in the horizontal direction. Based on the experimental results for a nuclear fuel rod sample with a formation of surface crud, an inspection resolution of 50 ${\mu}m$ is achieved using the proposed method. In terms of the degree of precision, this inspection resolution is an improvement of more than 300% from a 150 ${\mu}m$ resolution, which is the conventional measurement criteria required for the deformation of neutron irradiated fuel rods.
In view of the complex geometric structure of the rod bundle channel and the limitation of the current CHF visualization experiment technology, it is very difficult to obtain the rod bundle CHF mechanism directly through the phenomenon of the rod bundle CHF visualization experiment. In order to obtain the applicable CHF mechanism assumption for rod bundle channel, firstly, five most representative DNB type round tube CHF mechanistic models are obtained with evaluation and screening. Then these original round tube CHF mechanistic models based on inlet conditions are converted to local conditions and coupled with subchannel analysis code ATHAS. Based on 5 × 5 full-length rod bundle CHF experimental data independently developed by Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC), the applicability research of each model for CHF prediction performance in rod bundle channel is carried out, and the commonness and difference of each model are comparatively studied. The CHF mechanism assumption of superheated liquid layer depletion that is most likely to be applicable for the rod bundle channel is selected and two directions that need to be improved are given. This study provides a reference for the development of CHF mechanistic model in rod bundle channel.
The small modular liquid-metal fast reactor (SMFR) is an important component of advanced nuclear systems. SMFRs exhibit relatively low breeding capability and constraint space for control rod installation. Consequently, control rods are deeply inserted at beginning and are withdrawn gradually to compensate for large burnup reactivity loss in a long lifetime. This paper is committed to investigating the impact of control rod compensation operation on core neutronics characteristics. This paper presents a whole core fine depletion model of long lifetime SMFR using OpenMC and the influence of depletion chains is verified. Three control rod position schemes to simulate the compensation process are compared. The results show that the fine simulation of the control rod compensation process impacts significantly the fuel burnup distribution and absorber consumption. A control rod equivalent position scheme proposed in this work is an optimal option in the trade-off between computation time and accuracy. The control position is crucial for accurate power distribution and void feedback coefficients in SMFRs. The results in this paper also show that the pin level power distribution is important due to the heterogeneous distribution in SMFRs. The fuel burnup distribution at the end of core life impacts the worth of control rods.

In this paper, modal testing and finite element modeling results to identify the modal parameters of a nuclear fuel rod as well as its cladding tube are discussed. A vertically standing full-size cladding tube and a fuel rod with lead pellets were used in the modal testing. As excessive flow-induced vibration causes a failure in fuel rods, such as fretting wear, the vibration level of fuel rods should be low enough to prevent failure of these components. Because vibration amplitude can be estimated based on the modal parameters, the dynamic characteristics must be determined during the design process. Therefore, finite element models are developed based on the test results. The effect of a lumped mass attached to a cladding tube model was identified during the finite element model optimization process. Unlike a cladding tube model, the density of a fuel rod with pellets cannot be determined in a straightforward manner because pellets do not move in the same phase with the cladding tube motion. The density of a fuel rod with lead pellets was determined by comparing natural frequency ratio between the cladding tube and the rod. Thus, an improved fuel rod finite element model was developed based on the updated cladding tube model and an estimated fuel rod density considering the lead pellets. It is shown that the entire pellet mass does not contribute to the fuel rod dynamics; rather, they are only partially responsible for the fuel rod dynamic behavior.
For the successful design of nuclear reactor, it is very important to investigate thermal-hydraulic characteristics of fuel rod bundle. Fluid flow and heat transfer in the non-circular cross-section of nuclear fuel rod bundle are different from those found in common circular tube. And complex three dimensional flow including secondary and vortex flow, is formed around the bundles. The purpose of this research is to examine how geometries and flow conditions affect heat transfer in fuel rod bundle. Design data for nuclear fuel rod bundle and structure are surveyed, and $3{\times}3$ sub-channel model is adopted in this study. Computational results are compared with the heat transfer data measured by naphthalene sublimation method, and numerical analysis and evaluation are performed at various design conditions and flow conditions.

Nuclear fuel rods are exposed to axial flow in a reactor, and flow-induced-vibration due to the flow usually causes damage in the fuel rods. Thus a prior knowledge about dynamic behavior of a fuel rod exposed to the flow condition should be provided. This paper shows that dynamic characteristics of a nuclear fuel rod depend on axial flow velocity. Assuming small lateral displacement, the effects of uniform axial flow are investigated. The analytic results show that axial flow generally reduces fuel rod stiffness and raises its damping in normal condition. Also, the critical axial velocities which make the fuel rod behavior unstable were found. That is, solving generalized eigenvalue equation of the fuel rod dynamic system, the eigenvalues with positive real part are detected. Based on the simulation results, on the other hand, it turns out that the ordinary axial flow in nuclear reactors does not affect to stability of a nuclear fuel rod even in the conservative condition.
