Even in non-road UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle), spark ignition engines are often used to reduce emissions. In this study, gasoline and LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) fuels were applied to UTV engines, and the exhaust gas and combustion stability were compared through engine tests. A 0.8-liter two-cylinder SI engine was used in the experiment. Experiments were conducted while changing the IVO (Intake Valve Open) and EVC (Exhaust Valve Close) at 1500 rpm 14 N·m, 40 N·m, and 3000 rpm 17 N·m, 44 N·m conditions. As a result of the experiment, when the valve overlap increased according to the change of IVO and EVC, combustion stability decreased and THC emission increased, but NOx decreased. Comparing the LPG engine with the gasoline engine, the amount of CO2 and PN (Particulate Number) generation decreased in the LPG engine, and the combustion stability was good.
The regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have been steadily strengthened in ship emissions. Accordingly, there is a growing need for development of related technologies for the removal of contaminants that may occur during the treatment of SOx and NOx using a wet scrubber. However, this system also leads to wastewater production when the exhaust gas is scrubbed. In this research, we evaluated the performance of an ion selective resin process in accordance with scrubber wastewater discharge regulations, specifically nitrate discharge, by the IMO. Accelerated real and synthetic wastewater of wet scrubbers, contained high amounts of TDS with high nitrate, is used as feed water in lab scale systems. Furthermore, a pilot scale dissolved air flotation (DAF) using microbubble generator with ion exchange resin process was combined and developed in order to apply for the treatment of wet scrubber wastewater. The results of the present study revealed that operating conditions, such as resin property, bed volume (BV), and inlet wastewater flow rate, significantly affect the removal performance. Finally, through a pilot test, DAF with ion exchange resin process showed a noticeable improvement of the nitrate removal rate compared to the single DAF process.
A thorough inventory of ship emissions, particularly ship's emission of in-port area is necessary to identify significant sources of exhaust gases such as NOx, SOx, PM, and CO2 and trends in emission levels over time, and reduce their serious effects on the environment and human health. Therefore, the goal of this study is to assess the volume of emissions from ships in Mokpo port, which serves as a gateway to the southwest coast of Korea, using a bottom-up methodology and data from the automatic identification system (AIS) and the Korean Port Management Information System (Port-MIS). In this work, an analysis of ship movement utilizing AIS data and an actual set of data on ship specification were gathered. By examining ship movement using AIS data, We also proposed a new approach for identifying cruising/maneuvering mode. Finally, the results were classified by ship operating mode, by exhaust gas, by ship type, and by berth, which provides a thorough and in-depth analysis of the air pollution caused by ships in Mokpo port.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted several regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships. In addition, there is a requirement for shipping liners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Accordingly, we need to take measurements to ensure that the steps taken are both efficient and environmentally friendly. It has been determined that the application of the Miller cycle in diesel engines has the effect of both reducing the amount of NOx and improving thermal efficiency. However, this method requires a considerably larger charge air pressure. Therefore, we consider a two-stage turbo-charging system, which not only results in a high charging pressure, but also improves the part load performance with an exhaust-gas bypass system or the application of the Miller cycle. Because of complications associated with the two-stage turbo-charging system, it is complex and difficult to realize a design that optimizes matching between diesel engine and turbo-chargers. Accordingly, it is necessary to perform a quantitative analysis to determine the effects and optimal conditions of these different systems in the early stage of system design. In this paper, we develop a simulation program to model these systems, and we verify that the results of this program are reliable. Further, we discuss methods that can be employed to improve its efficiency.
This study aims to identify the impacts of air quality in the Korean Peninsula according to the China's environmental policies in preparation of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The measurement of emission variations in China, aircraft measurement, and modelling were carried out. The reduction measures in Beijing, China and its emission changes resulted in $30{\sim}65%$ in decrease out of the total emissions within the Beijing region, whereas when it comes to the whole nation of China, the reduction rate was about $4{\sim}9%$. Comparing the concentration of the air pollutants in Seoul and Ganghwa in August 2008 during around the period of Beijing Olympic Games with one in $2004{\sim}2007$ showed that the $SO_2$ concentrations in the past was above 5ppb, while the concentration in the 2008 olympic period was 4ppb and below. The NOx at the Seokmori site in Ganghwa tended to be lower in concentration in 2008 than in between $2004{\sim}2007$. As for $O_3$ and $PM_{2.5}$, the concentration tended to be rather low since August 11. The air current track that showed during the period of aircraft measurement presented to be flowed into Korea through the Northeast part of China and the coast of Bohai Bay, while the concentrations of $SO_2$. NOx, and $O_3$ over the west sea on August 20 and 24 were 0.54 (0.28ppb), 0.86 (1.84ppb), and 54.0 (41.5ppb) respectively, similar or lower than the ones measured in the past in the similar current patterns. The modelling result showed similar patterns to the data of aircraft measurement, in particular in $SO_2$. Overall, the reduction measures in Beijing, China affected directly and indirectly the air quality in the Korean peninsular, but the impact was not significant as it was momentary and limited to the intended area.

As a carbon-free, green growth alternative, internal and external interest in hydrogen energy and technology is growing. Hydrogen was added to co-axial methane, methane-propane, and methane-propane-ethane diffusion flames, which are the main ingredients of LNG, to evaluate its effect on flame formation and combustion products. The variation in combustion products produced by adding hydrogen gradually to diffusion pyrolysis at room temperature and normal pressure conditions was observed experimentally by using a gas analyzer, and the shape of diffusion pyrolysis was observed step by step using a digital camera. The experimental results showed that the production volume of nitrogen oxides tended to increase and became close to linear as hydrogen was added to the diffusion pyrotechnic. This is because the relatively high temperature of heat insulation and fast combustion speed of hydrogen facilitated the production of thermal NOx. On the other hand, CO2 production tended to decrease as hydrogen was added to reduce the overall carbon ratio contained in the mixed diffusion flame of methane, methane-propane, and methane-ethane-propane. This means that the mixed fuel use of LNG-hydrogen in ships may potentially reduce emissions of CO2, a greenhouse gas.

Circulating Fluidized Bed(CFB) combustion has the several advantages which are the fuel flexibility, the economy, the efficiency and the environment. It is necessary to apply a renewable energy to produce electricity due to the Renewable Portfolio Standard(RPS) mandates recently. So, in this study, co-combustion with a coal and a wood pellet was investigated to evaluate the combustibility and the environment as function of blending ratio of them in a Lab-scale CFB reactor. To investigate the characteristics of the co-combustion, the blending ratio which is the weight of wood pellet by the total calorific value of the supplied, was considered. Bed material was a river sand(No. 7). As increasing the blending ratio, the exhausted gas emissions such as CO, NOx, HC and SOx were decreased. But in case of wood pellet over 30%, CO, HC and SOx emission were increased. And the gas temperatures at the downstream were decreased.

In 2016, the IMO's new rules for an 80% reduction in NOx emissions in newly built ships will necessitate the use of LNG as a clean fuel. So far, the developed European countries have led the development of LNG bunkering ships and related facilities. An LNG bunkering system stores LNG in a horizontal or vertical IMO "C"-Type tank insulated with perlite powder, and a vacuum in the annular space between the double walls, like the cryogenic liquid nitrogen tank. Current storage tanks have high heat leakage, evaporating over 2.0% daily, and are difficult to build with the required vacuum. A more efficiently insulated storage tank could reduce the evaporation rate. This research carried out thermal analysis on a new effective insulation method that separates high vacuum in the annular space between two tanks with a solid insulation material, such as urethane foam, lining the outer vessel. This highly efficient insulation system obtained an evaporation rate of 0.03% per day under a $10^{-3}torr$ vacuum, and an evaporation rate of 0.11% at $10^{-45}torr$. Even if the space loses its vacuum, the new insulation system showed a lower evaporation rate of 4.12% than the present perlite system of 4.9%. This newly developed tank can increase the efficiency of LNG storage tank and may help keep LNG bunkering systems safe.

From now on, in order to meet more stringer diesel emission standard, diesel vehicle should be equipped with emission after-treatment devices as NOx reduction catalyst and particulate filters. Urea-SCR is being developed as the most efficient method of reducing NOx emissions in the after-treatment devices of diesel engines, and recent studies have begun to mount the urea-SCR device for diesel passenger cars and light duty vehicles. That is because their operational characteristics are quite different from heavy duty vehicles, urea solution injection should be changed with other conditions. Therefore, the number and diameter of the nozzle, injection directions, mounting positions in front of the catalytic converter are important design factors. In this study, major design parameters concerning urea solution injection in front of SCR are optimized by using a CFD analysis and Taguchi method. The computational prediction of internal flow and spray characteristics in front of SCR was carried out by using STAR-CCM+7.06 code that used to evaluate $NH_3$ uniformity index($NH_3$ UI). The design parameters are optimized by using the $L_{16}$ orthogonal array and small-the-better characteristics of the Taguchi method. As a result, the optimal values are confirmed to be valid in 95% confidence and 5% significance level through analysis of variance(ANOVA). The compared maximize $NH_3$ UI and activation time($NH_3$ UI 0.82) are numerically confirmed that the optimal model provides better conversion efficiency of $NH_3$. In addition, we propose a method to minimize wall-wetting around the urea injector in order to prevent injector blocks caused by solid urea loading. Consequently, the thickness reduction of fluid film in front of mixer is numerically confirmed through the mounting mixer and correcting injection direction by using the trial and error method.

Ground-level ozone affects human health and plant growth. Ozone is produced by chemical reactions between oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from anthropogenic and biogenic sources. In this study, two different land cover and emission factor datasets were input to the MEGAN v2.1 emission model to examine how these parameters contribute to the biogenic emissions and ozone production. Four input sensitivity scenarios (A, B, C and D) were generated from land cover and vegetation emission factors combination. The effects of BVOCs emissions by scenario were also investigated. From air quality modeling result using CAMx, maximum 1 hour ozone concentrations were estimated 62 ppb, 60 ppb, 68 ppb, 65 ppb, 55 ppb for scenarios A, B, C, D and E, respectively. For maximum 8 hour ozone concentration, 57 ppb, 56 ppb, 63 ppb, 60 ppb, and 53 ppb were estimated by scenario. The minimum difference by land cover was up to 25 ppb and by emission factor that was up to 35 ppb. From the modeling performance evaluation using ground ozone measurement over the six regions (East Seoul, West Seoul, Incheon, Namyangju, Wonju, and Daegu), the model performed well in terms of the correlation coefficient (0.6 to 0.82). For the 4 urban regions (East Seoul, West Seoul, Incheon, and Namyangju), ozone simulations were not quite sensitive to the change of BVOC emissions. For rural regions (Wonju and Daegu) , however, BVOC emission affected ozone concentration much more than previously mentioned regions, especially in case of scenario C. This implies the importance of biogenic emissions on ozone production over the sub-urban to rural regions.
