  • Many researchers have recently proposed various parameters, variables of models and experimental methods to evaluate fracture properties of concrete, and their developments allow us to analyze the non-linear and quasi-brittle fracture mechanisms. This paper presents a brief treatment of the fracture parameters. Additionally, three-point bending tests were conducted to compare J-integral($J_{Ic}$) with other parameters($K_{Ic},\;G_{Ic},\;and\;G_F$). The change in parameter values with respect to the width and notch length of concrete beam specimens was also considered. The load-displacement curves were used to measure the concrete fracture toughness experimentally. From the results of experiment, it was found that the value of $G_F\;and\;J_{Ic}$ decreased as the notch depth increased and that $G_F$ was less sensitive than $J_{Ic}$. Therefore, the former, $G_F$, is more appropriate in using it as the concrete fracture toughness parameter. The values of $G_F\;and\;J_{Ic}$ increased when the width of concrete specimens increasing from 75 mm to 150 mm. Thus, the effects of the specimen width should be considered in determining the fracture toughness of concrete.

  • The main objective of this study is to consider the effect of fatigue crack behavior on the variable depth of micro hole defects in SM20C at the symmetric position. The fatigue crack propagation test is performed by rotary bending fatigue test machine. The relationship between crack length(2a), cycles(N) and crack growth rate(da/dN) are investigated in this study. The result from the rotary bending fatigue test under the applied stress at 250MPa turned out that the fatigue life illustrated almost constant when the depth of symmetric micro hole deflects is both part A and B at the hope depth(h) = 0.5mm.

  • This paper deals with the formulation and development of fracture criteria for high-strength structural members containing surface damage in the form of notches (i.e., blunt defects). The important role of the yield strength of the material and its strain hardening capacity (evaluated by means of the constitutive law or stress-strain curve) is analysed in depth by considering the fracture performance of notched samples taken from high-strength steels with different levels of cold drawing (the most heavily drawn steel being commercial prestressing steel used in prestressed concrete). The final aim of the paper is to establish fracture-based design criteria for structural members made of steels with distinct yield strength and containing very different kinds of notch-shape surface damage.

  • The application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites for rehabilitation of steel structures has become vital in recent years. This paper presents an experimental program and a finite element (FE) modelling approach to study the effectiveness of CFRP patch for repair of notch damaged circular hollow sectional (CHS) steel beams. The proposed modeling approach is unique because it takes into account the orthotropic behavior and stacking sequence of composite materials. Parametric study was conducted to investigate the effect of initial damage (i.e., notch depth) on flexural performance of the notched beams and effectiveness of the repair system using the validated FE models. Results demonstrated the ability of CFRP patch to repair notched CHS steel beams, restoring them to their original flexural stiffness and strength. The effect of composite patch repair technique on post-elastic stiffness was more pronounced compared to the elastic stiffness. Composite patch repair becomes more effective when the level of initial damage of beam increases.

  • In this research, burst tests for axial notched steam generator tubes were conducted. To measure the burst pressure of notched tubes, a burst testing system was manufactured. The tests were conducted under internal pressure at room temperature. Part-through-wall and through-wall notches which have various geometries with different depths and lengths were machined by electro-discharged-machined(EDM) method. The burst pressure decreased exponentially with increasing notch length and decreased almost linearly with increasing notch depth. A comparison of the burst pressure with existing burst pressure solutions for cracked tube show that the existing solution agree well with the test results.

  • In this paper, a proposal for improving the performance of IF in-phase combiner is presented in view of simple hardware design and good performance for space diversity application. By adding the stable normalization circuit to the phase detector, better performances are obtained even for a severe notch depth of 30 dB. To check the validity of this proposal, various results based upon numerical simulation and laboratory test are presented here in conjunction with 64-QAM digital radio relay system.

  • This study reviews several fracture models for predicting the residual strength of notched composite laminates. Representative experimental results on the residual strength of composite laminates containing a notch subjected to static uniaxial tensile loading have been collected from open literature. And notched strength data for T300/5208 are analyzed. The various parameters associated with the fracture models have been determined for laminates. Notched strength data sets are compared with fracture models and the applicability of the different fracture models in predicting the notched strength of composite laminates is discussed. And static tests have been performed on 2.0mm depth notched specimen. And the test results are compared with analysis models.

  • The objective of this paper is to examine the detection limit, growth characteristics and notch curvature radius in short crack problem. Measurement techniques such as ultrasonic method and back-face strain compliance method were adapted. The fatigue crack growth rate of the short crack is slower than that of a long crack for a notched specimen. The short crack is detected effectively by ultrasonic method. A short surface crack occurs in the middle of specimen thickness and is transient to a through crack when maximum crack depth is larger than the notch curvature radius.

  • The present study reported of the use of special shaped blade to reduce the difference in pressure across the Wells turbine for wave energy conversion. The blade profile was composed of NACA0020 airfoils and trailing edge was notched like chevron. Experiments were performed investigating the influence of trailing edge shape on the turbine performance. Four notch depths were used to investigate the effect of depth of cut on the turbine performance. As results, by placing a notch-cut at the trailing edge of the blade, it was possible to reduce the pressure difference across the turbine without lowering the efficiency. In addition, the pressure difference substantially reduced at a constant rate with the increase of the cut ratio.

  • The auther studied clinically and. radiologically 48 cases which had been diagnosed as TMJ ankylosis in SNUDH (1974-1984). The purpose of this study is to analyse clinical features of TMJ ankylosis and to evaluate the effect of TMJ ankylosis on the growth of the mandible. The obtained results were as follows: 1. Total 48 cases of TMJ ankylosis patients consist of 23 males and 25 females. 65 percent of all cases of TMJ ankylosis occurred in patients between 1 and 10 years of age. The awerage age at the onset of ankylosis was 11.7 and average duration at the time of examination was 11.7 years. 2. Unilateral akylosis (81.3%) was more frequent than bilateral ankylosis (18.7%). 3. Traum a (57.9%) and infection (21.2%) were main etiology. 4. Inability to open the mouth (78.3%) and facial asymmetry (17.4%) were main chief complaints. 5. Mandibular morphology through radiographic features. (a) In TMJ ankylosis patients the ramus length of the ankylosed side was shorter than that of the non-ankylosed side. Comparing with the centrol group, ramus length of the each side was shorter than normal value. (b) The partial body length of the ankylosed side was longer than that of the non-ankylosed side. Comparing with the control group, partial body length of the each side was longer than normal value. Partial body length was related with antegonial notch depth. (c) Ratio of upper and lower ramus length at the level of mandibular foramen was smaller in ankylosed side than in non-ankylosed side. (d) Antegonial notch depth and ramus posterior contour depth were deeper in ankylosed side than in non-ankylosed side and those of both sides were deeper than normal value. (e) Gonial angle in ankylosed side was larger than in non-ankylosed side and that in both sides was smaller than normal value.
