Potential advantages of using vapor injection in a two stage rotary compressor for a $CO_2$ heat pump water heater system were addressed in this paper by numerical simulation. Vapor separated from a flash tank in the middle of the expansion process can be used for injection into the second stage suction plenum of the compressor to improve the system performance. Vapor injection increases the intermediate pressure between the two stages, thus increasing the first stage compressor work and reducing that of the second stage. As a whole, however, the compressor input power increases due to injected mass flow rate for the second stage. Computer simulation showed that increment of the cooling capacity by vapor injection exceeded that of the compressor work, thus improving the system performance. COP improvement by vapor injection was calculated to be about 5-14% for normal operating conditions. With vapor injection, a maximum COP was found when the displacement volume of the second stage becomes 90-95% of that of the first stage of the compressor.
Changes in cardiac performances were observed under variations of the arterial and/or venous pressures with K-loading or K-depletion in turtle heart. Hearts were perfused with turtle Ringer-Locke's solutions containing various levels of potassium ion concentration. When venous pressure increased from 4 to 12 cm $H_2O$, cardiac output increased from $6.2{\pm}0.68$ to $15.7{\pm}0.75\;ml/min$, concomittantly. On the contrary, cardiac output decreased during the elevation of arterial pressure. Stroke work increased more prominently during the arterial pressure elevation than during the elevation of venous pressure. During K-depletion$(1{\sim}2mEq/L)$, cardiac output increased to two times that of normal K-concentration$(3{\sim}6\;mEq/L)$ group. Heart rate increased also, but less markedly. In K-loaded$(7{\sim}8\;mEq/L)$ group, both the cardiac output and heart rate decreased but stroke volume rather increased, because heart rate decrement was disproportionate to that of cardiac output. We concluded that in perfused turtle heart, cardiac output variation was more sensitive to K_depletion whereas heart rate to K-loading.
To evaluate the present status of physical fittness of Korean long distance runners, body fat, pulmonary functions, maximal oxygen intake and oxygen debt were measured in 5 elite marathoners (A group), 6 college student runners (B group) and 3 middle school student runners (C group). After laboratory tests, full course marathon running was performed in 2 elite marathoners during which their heart rates were monitored continuously. The results are summerized as follows: 1) Total body fat in all three groups are in the range of 13-15% of their body weight. 2) In all three groups, average values of various pulmonary functions were within the normal limits, but those of tidal volume were higher and respiratory rate were lower in comparison to normal values. These phenomena may represent respiratory adaptations against training. The average resting oxygen consumptions in A,B and C were $322{\pm}23$, $278{\pm}14$ and $287{\pm}16$m1/min, respectively. 3) In all three groups, resting blood pressures were in the normal range, but the resting heart rate was slightly lower in groups A $(56{\pm}3\;beats/min)$ and B $(64{\pm}2\;beats/min)$ and higher in group C $(82{\pm}9\;beats/min)$ in comparison to normal values. These changes in cardiovascular functions in marathoners may also represent adaptive phenomena. 4) During treadmill running the minute ventilation and oxygen consumption of the runners increased lineally with work load in all three groups. When the oxygen consumption was related to heart rate, it appeared to be a exponential function of the heart rate in all three groups. 5) The average maximal heart rates during maximal work were $196{\pm}3$, $191{\pm}3$ and $196{\pm}5\;beats/min$ for groups A,B and C, respectively. Maximal oxygen intakes were $84.2{\pm}3.3\;ml/min/kg$ in group A, $65.2{\pm}1.1\;ml/min/kg$ in group B and $58.7{\pm}0.4\;ml/min/kg$ in group C. 6) In all three groups, oxygen debts and the rates of recovery of heart rate after treadmill running were lower than those of long ditsance runners reported previously. 7) The 40 km running time in 2 elite marathoners was recorded to be $2^{\circ}42'25'$, and their mean speed was 243 m/min (ranged 218 to 274 m/min). The heart rate appeared to increase lineally with running speed, and the total energy expenditure during 40 km running was approximately 1360.2 Calories. From these it can be speculated that if their heart rates were maintained at 166 beats/min during the full course of marathon running, their records would be arround $2^{\circ}15'$. Based on these results, we may suspect that a successful long distance running is, in part, dependent on the economical utilization of one's aerobic capacity.
Objectives : The objective of this study is to compare the circadian patterns of heart rate variability assessed by 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings during day shift and night shift among the workers in the 5 days-concecutive-12-hour shift in an automobile factory in Korea. Methods : The study population consisted 300 workers, who were randomly selected among the 8700 total workers in one car factory. To analyse circadian variation, the 24-hour ECG recordings (Marquette) were measured during day shift (08:00-20:00 h) and night shift (20:00-08:00 h). Analysis was performed for all time and frequency domain measures of HRV. 233 workers completed taking 24-hour ECG recordings. Results : This study shows that the 24 hourcircadian variation mainly follows work/sleep cycle rather than day/night cycle among shift workers. This study also shows that among the night shift, the circadian variation between work and sleep cycle decreased compared to the work/sleep cycle among day shift workers. All time and frequency domain parameters (except LF/HF ratio) show significantly different between work and sleep in the day shift and night shift. Conclusion : These changes in heart rate variability circadian rhythms reflect significant reductions in cardiac parasympathetic activity with the most marked reduction in normal vagal activity among the shift workers. Especially, it suggests the circadian rhytm has blunted among the night workers. The quantification of the circadian variation in HRV can be a surrogates of workers' potential health risk, as well as suggests possible mechanisms through which the shift works compromise workers' health.
알고리즘을 훈련하고 검증하기 위해 PNUH(Pusan National University Hospital) 데이터셋을 이용하였다.
In Korea, female workforce has reached more than 40% of total working population, but the effects of work on spontaneous abortion are yet to be examined. This study as conducted to investigate the occupational effects on spontaneous abortion. Medical insurance claim data were used to examine the effects of the employment status and industry of employment on spontaneous abortion. The study population was composed of females, aged $15{\sim}44$, who were the beneficiary of medical insurance in the month of June, 1993. The working females covered by medical insurance for industrial workers, had the highest age-adjusted Spontaneous Abortion rate (SAB rate=claim frequency of spontaneous abortion/claim frequency of complication of pregnancy, childbirth and the puerperium), 6.65% whereas female dependants of medical insurance for industrial workers had the lowest age-adjusted SAB rate, 4.54%. Among industrial workers, the workers in manufacturing industry had the highest age-adjusted Spontaneous Abortion ratio(SAB ratio=claim frequency of spontaneous abortion/claim frequency of completly normal delivery), 43.2/100 whereas those in financing and service industry had age-adjusted SAB ratio, 16.2/100 and 20.5/100, respectively. The results of the study suggest the adverse effect of manufacturing Industry on reproduction. Work environments such as chemical exposures, overwork, awkard posture, and job stress should be further studied for their effects on reproductive functions of female.
Intensive theoretical and experimental studies have been carried out at Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) on controlling the bio absorbing rate of the Mg alloys with high mechanical strength through tailoring of electrochemical potential. Key technology for retarding the corrosion of the Mg alloys is to equalize the corrosion potentials of the constituent phases in the alloys, which prevented the formation of Galvanic circuit between the constituent phases resulting in remarkable reduction of corrosion rate. By thermodynamic consideration, the possible phases of a given alloy system were identified and their work functions, which are related to their corrosion potentials, were calculated by the first principle calculation. The designed alloys, of which the constituent phases have similar work function, were fabricated by clean melting and extrusion system. The newly developed Mg alloys named as KISTUI-MG showed much lower corrosion rate as well as higher strength than previously developed Mg alloys. Biocompatibility and feasibility of the Mg alloys as orthopedic implant materials were evaluated by in vitro cell viability test, in vitro degradation test of mechanical strength during bio-corrosion, in vivo implantation and continuous observation of the implant during in vivo absorbing procedures. Moreover, the cells attached on the Mg alloys was observed using cryo-FIB (focused ion beam) system without the distortion of cell morphology and its organ through the removal of drying steps essential for the preparation of normal SEM/TEM samples. Our Mg alloys showed excellent biocompatibility satisfying the regulations required for biomedical application without evident hydrogen evolution when it implanted into the muscle, inter spine disk, as well as condyle bone of rat and well contact interface with bone tissue when it was implanted into rat condyle.
The performance of building should be deteriorated with time while the building would maintain and manage the function and performance to get a living condition. For the efficient maintenance of the building, the repair cycle would be provided and applied during the service-life time. The service-life time of the building components would be needed to determine the repair time and the repair scope. The service-life time of the building components would be calculated with the 1st repair time and the recovery rate of the performance, considering the recovery rate after repaired. In this paper, the 1st repair time would be estimated with the normal probability distribution, choice probability and 3rd quadratic function. The recovery rate of the building components assumes various level according to the research target and utility area. The results of this study are as follows ; first, most of the components of the building work would range about 30 years in the service-life time and the components of the mechanical works range from 28 years to 37 years, those of the electrical works would be about 31 years.

The fluid retention effect of the Volume Control Tank (VCT) leads to a long time delay in Reactor Coolant System (RCS) concentration during the boration process. A coupled model combining a lumped-parameter sub-model and a computational fluid dynamics sub-model is currently used to investigate the concentration dynamic characteristic of RCS during the boration process. This model is validated by comparison with experimental data, and the predicted results show excellent agreement with experimental data. We provide detailed fields in VCT and concentration variations of RCS to study the interaction between mixing in VCT and the transient responses of RCS. Moreover, the impacts of the inlet flow rate, inlet nozzle diameter, original concentration, and replenishing temperature of VCT on the RCS concentration characteristic are studied. The inlet flow rate and nozzle diameter of VCT remarkably affect the RCS concentration characteristic. Too-large or too-small inlet flow rates and nozzle diameters will lead to unacceptable long delays. In this work, the optimal inlet flow rate and nozzle diameter of VCT are 5 m3/h and 58.8 mm, respectively. Besides, the impacts of the original concentration and replenishing temperature of VCT are negligible under normal operating conditions.
Gas in disk galaxies interacts nonlinearly with a underlying stellar spiral potential to form galactic spiral shocks. Numerical simulations typically show that these shocks are unstable to the wiggle instability, forming non-axisymmetric structures with high vorticity. While previous studies suggested that the wiggle instability may arise from the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability or orbit crowding of gas elements near the shock, its physical nature remains uncertain. It was even argued that the wiggle instability is of numerical origin, caused by the inability of a numerical code to resolve a shock that is inclined to numerical grids. In this work, we perform a normal-mode linear stability analysis of galactic spiral shocks as a boundary-value problem. We find that the wiggle instability originates physically from the potential vorticity generation at a distorted shock front. As the gas follows galaxy rotation, it periodically passes through multiple shocks, successively increasing its potential vorticity. This sets up a normal-mode that grows exponentially, with a growth rate comparable to the orbital angular frequency. We show that the results of our linear stability analysis are in good agreement with the those of local hydrodynamic simulations of the wiggle instability.
