  • A pathway for the formation of normal $CoAl_2O_4$ particles is suggested. The optimal amount of malonic acid was determined, and the characteristics of the obtained powders were investigated. Normal $CoAl_2O_4$ powders were prepared using solutions of malonic acid and metal nitrates. X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements, as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultraviolet/visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy were carried out. Normal $CoAl_2O_4$ crystallites were formed by a solid state reaction between $CoAl_2O_4$ and amorphous aluminum oxide. The optimal molar ratio of malonic acid to the nitrate anions present in the initial solution was found to be 0.30~0.35. The particles were composed of agglomerates of primary particles. The primary particles were 40 nm in size. This size was relatively constant regardless of the preparation temperature. However, the size of the agglomerated particles increased to 220 nm with increasing temperature.

  • Effect of modified atmosphere packaging conditions on quality changes of dry jujube was investigated. Dry jujubes with moisture content of 26.7% were packaged in PET/Al/PE film pouches with modified atmospheres. The tested packages include those with normal air, vacuum, CO2 flushing, N2 flushing and O2 scavenger. Packages were stored at 25$^{\circ}C$ for 6 months, during which ascorbic acid concentration, browning level, titratable acidity and surface color were measured. Generally modified atmosphere packages could improve quality retention of dry jujubes except that vacuum package resulted in large surface color change. CO2-flushed package showed the best quality retention of high ascorbic acid content and low browning during 112 days, but caused high amounts of ascorbic acid destruction and browning in longer storage. In all the modified atmosphere packages titratable acidity reached a maximum followed by decline and subsequent rise, while it increased linearly with time in normal air package. Considering ascorbic acid retention browning level and surface color changes during 112 days, the packages of CO2 flushing and N2 flushing were better than others.

  • The sensing and electrical characteristics of $WO_{3}$-based n-type semiconductor gas sensors are investigated. In normal air condition, $TiO_{2}$(4 wt. %)-doped $WO_{3}$-based sensor fabricated without any binder shows the grain boundary ( GB ) potential barrier height of 0.26 V. Sensors fabricated with alumina, PVA and silica sol binders show 0.17, 0.22 and 0.26 V of GB potential barrier height, respectively. In the ambience of 120 ppm $NO_{x}$ concentration, the GB potential barrier height of the sensor fablicated without binder is increased to 0.59 V. The sensors were fabricated with alumina, PVA, silica sol binders show 0.43, 0.66 and 0.52 V of potential barrier, respectively. Thus the variation of the potential barrier at GB is largest in the sensor fabricated with the PVA binder. This is found to be the main reason why the sensor fabricated with the PVA binder shows the best sensitivity. It is also found that the decrease of sensitivity at a temperature higher than the optimum operation temperature is due to the temperature dependence of the sensor resistance in normal air condition rather than the desorption of the adsorbed $NO_{x}$ gas particles. In the ambience of 250 ppm CO concentration, the GB potential barrier heights of the sensors fabricated without binder and with PVA binder are about 0.2 V showing negligible change compared to the case of normal air ambience. This fact indicates that these sensors are good candidates for the selective detection of $NO_{x}$ gas in the mixture of CO and $NO_{x}$ gases.
