Photophysical Behaviors of Biphenylcarboxylic Acids in Various Solvents; Excited-State Geometry Change and Intramolecular Charge Transfer

  • The solvent-dependent photophysical properties of 2-biphenylcarboxylic acid (2BPCA) and 4-biphenylcarboxylic acid(4BPCA), which have a pre-twisted conformation in the ground state, have been investigated. The fluorescence spectra of 4BPCA show vibrational structure with a non-mirror image to the absorption spectra in nonpolar solvent while those of 2BPCA show no structure even in nonpolar solvents. As the solvent polarity increases, the fluorescence spectra become diffuse and broad with a strong red shift resulting in the large Stokes shift. The large fluorescence Stokes shift of BPCA's in polar solvent is also partially due to an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) interaction in the excited state, as demonstrated by the large dipole moment in the excited state (7.6-10.6 D). The fluorescence decay behaviors of BPCA's (decay-times and their pre-exponential factors) also depend on solvent polarity in agreement with the solvent-dependent properties of the steady-state fluorecence. The data have been discussed in terms of change in the excited-state potential energy surface with respect to change of the dihedral angle of biphenyl moiety.

Resistive Switching Memory Devices Based on Layer-by-Layer Assembled-Superparamagnetic Nanocomposite Multilayers via Nucleophilic Substitution Reaction in Nonpolar Solvent

  • We demonstrate a facile and robust layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly method for the fabrication of nonvolatile resistive switching memory (NRSM) devices based on superparamagnetic nanocomposite multilayers, which allows the highly enhanced magnetic and resistive switching memory properties as well as the dense and homogeneous adsorption of nanoparticles, via nucleophilic substitution reaction (NSR) in nonpolar solvent. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MP) of about size 12 nm (or 7 nm) synthesized with oleic acid (OA) in nonpolar solvent could be converted into 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BMPA)-stabilized iron oxide nanoparticles (BMPA-MP) by stabilizer exchange without change of solvent polarity. In addition, bromo groups of BMPA-MP could be connected with highly branched amine groups of poly (amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMA) in ethanol by NSR of between bromo and amine groups. Based on these results, nanocomposite multilayers using LbL assembly could be fabricated in nonpolar solvent by NSR of between BMPA-MP and PAMA without any additional phase transfer of MP for conventional LbL assembly. These resulting superparamagnetic multilayers displayed highly improved magnetic and resistive switching memory properties in comparison with those of multilayers based on water-dispersible MP. Furthermore, NRSM devices, which were fabricated by LbL assembly method under atmospheric conditions, exhibited the outstanding performances such as long-term stability, fast switching speed and high ON/OFF ratio comparable to that of conventional inorganic NRSM devices produced by vacuum deposition.

고분자 소재와 용매특성에 따른 유기용매 나노여과막 성능 분석 (Effects of Polymer Material and Solvent Properties on the Performance of Organic Solvent Nanofiltration Membranes)

  • 본 연구에서는 유기용매용 나노여과막 (Organic Solvent Nanofiltration, OSN)의 유기용매 투과 및 분리성능을 분석하였다. 비극성용매에 적합한 Puramem (PM) 시리즈 분리막의 소재를 분석한 후 다양한 유기용매 분위기에서의 투과성능을 데드엔드셀로 측정하였다. PM 시리즈 분리막은 극성용매 대비 비극성용매에서 더 높은 투과도를 보였으며, 용질의 종류 및 분자량에 따라 매우 독특한 배제성능을 보이는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 기존 수처리에 적용되는 Solution-diffusion 투과모델이 OSN 투과모델에는 적합하지 않다는 것을 알 수 있으며, solvent-solute-membrane 간의 상관관계를 더 정확하게 반영할 수 있는 새로운 인자가 필요하다는 결론을 낼 수 있다.

  • trans-1-(9-Anthryl)-2-(n-pyridyl)ethene (t-n-APyE, n=2 or 4) and trans-1-(9-anthryl)-2-pyrazinylethene (T-APzE) exhibits solvent-dependent fluorescence and efficient trans)cis photoisomerization. Photochemical reactivities of t-2-APyE, t-4-APyE, and t-APzE have been investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents. In nonpolar solvent, parallel photocyclization reaction occurs very efficiently in competition with the fluorescence and photoisomerization. But, in polar solvent, photocyclization was not observed. It is probably due to the stabilization of charge separated state in polar solvent, which is an intermediate in photoisomerization reaction.

On the Critical Scattering Phenomena of a Nonpolar Binary Liquid Mixture

  • Light scattering phenomena are discussed for a nonpolar binary liquid mixture composed of an optically active solute and an optically nonactive solvent in the critical region, using the Fisher theory. Comparing them with those in the case that the Ornstein-Zernike theory is satisfied, the appropriate analytic results are obtained and discussed.

이성분 용매 추출에 의한 미세조류로 부터의 바이오디젤용 지질 분리 (Extraction of Lipids from Microalgae Using Polar and Nonpolar Bi-solvent Systems)

  • Various single solvents were tested to find the effective solvent for the extraction of algae oil from wet-form Chlorella minutissima. In the case of single solvents, their extractabilities for algae oil were increased with their polarity because the water in wet algae cell is to form a solvent shell around the lipids. Based on these results, the wet-form algae samples were treated with a polar alcohol solvent and then a nonpolar solvent was added in algae residue. In the algae oil extraction by ethanol/n-hexane, total lipid contents were 40-50% and composition of triglyceride in extracted oil was 46.50%. Considering solvent toxicity of conventional solvent mixture such as chloroform and methanol for algae oil extraction, the ethanol/n-hexane system was identified as the effective one for the oil extraction from wet-form Chlorella minutissima.

마늘 Oleoresin 제조시 휘발성성분에 관한 추출용매효과 (Effect of Extraction Solvent on Volatile Compounds of Garlic Oleoresin)

  • 마늘의 이용성 증진에 관한 기초자료와 제품의 품질 향상에 기여하고자 마늘 oleoresin 제조과정 중의 휘발성 향기성분의 변화를 알기 위해 휘발성 향기성분을 4가지 용매로 추출하여 농축한 후, 가스크로마토그래피와 질량 분석 검출기 (mass selective detector)를 이용하여 polar(Supelcowax-$10^{TM}$)와 nonpolar capillary column(HP-5)에서 각각 분리, 동정하였다. 용매에 따른 oreoresin 추출을 보면 methanol을 사용하여 추출한 경우가 가장 peak area가 높았고 그외 acetone, methy acetate, hexane을 사용한 경우는 비슷하였다 Polar capillary column에서 총 41종이 분류되었고, pyran 및 그 유도체 물질 13종, 황화합물이 11여종, furan 및 그 유도체들이 6종, alcohol류 2종 분류되었고 그밖에도 2종의 heterocyclic compound가 각각 확인되었다. Nonpolar capillary column에서는 32종의 향기성분이 동정되었고, pyran및 그 유도체물질이 11종, 황화합물 11여 종, acid류 5종, pyran 및 그 유도체들이 3종 그밖에 eugenol 등이 나타났다. Nonpolar 보다 polar에서 휘발성성분의 다량 검출되었으며, 대부분의 휘발성 향기성분이 극성이 강한 methanol에서 잘 추출되었지만 마늘의 주요휘발성 성분인 황화합물 즉, 3,3'-thiobis 1-propene, methyl 2-propenyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, di-2-propenyl -trisulfide, 2-thiophenecarboxylic acid는 비극성용매인 methyl acetate와 hexane에서 잘 추출되었다.

Synthesis of new Thebaine Derivatives with Phenylsulfonylpropadiene

  • Reactions of thebaine with phenylsulfonylpropadiene in various solvents were investigated. It was found that Diels-Alder reaction adduct was obtained in nonpolar solvent, while addition reaction adduct was obtained in polar solvent. Transformations of these two products were also carried out.

  • To study the behavior of nucleic acid base in a nonpolar organic solvent, chloreform, we synthesized a derivative of guanosine. This erivative, guanosine-2', 3', 5'- trisobutyrate was obtained by reaction of guanosine with isobutyric anhydride, and identified by TLC, EA, IR and NMR. Hydrogen bonding specificity of this compound was revealed by IR and NMR. The molecules of guanosine 2',3',5'-trisobutyrate are self-associated in nonpolar solvent, and hydrogen bonds by imino protent become important as the concentration increases. In the presence of a cytosine derivative, the self-association of theguanosine drivative is destroyed, resulting from interaction with cytosine derivative.
