The characteristics of non-point source pollutant loads in middle-stream of Nakdong River Were studied through analysis of pollutant loads of 8 sub-watersheds divided based on administrative district. The pollutant concentration of each sub-watershed was collected from Nakdong-River Water Research Institute and Daegu Regional Environmental Office, respectively. Pollution items analysed in this study were BOD, SS, T-N and T-P. High degree of non-point pollution was observed from Gumi, Goryeong, Gyeongsan, Daegu and Sungju, and pollution was usually increased during rainy season. This result indicates that a given pollution condition within the watershed can be more sensitive than location factor to the level of water quality. The main sources of non-point pollution were population and livestock, as well as landuse factor, and were found to significantly contribute to the water pollution. Alternative solutions for controlling pollution sources, therefore, should be provided to meet target levels of water quality in this region.

Abstract Over the last several decades, crop production in the United States increased largely due to the extensive use of animal waste and fertilizers as plant nutrient supplements, and pesticides for crops pests and weed control. Without the application of animal waste best management, the use of animal waste can result in nonpoint source pollution from agricultural land area. In order to increase nutrient levels and decrease contamination from agricultural lands, nonpoint source pollution is responsible for water quality degradation. Nonpoint source pollutants such as animal waste, ferilizers, and pesticides are transported primarily through runoff from agricultural areas. Nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, can be a major water quality problem because they cause eutrophic algae growth. In 1985, it was presented that Watershed/Water Quality Monitoring for Evaluation BMP Effectiveness was implemented for Nomini Creek Watershed, located in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The watershed is predominantly agricultural and has an aerial extent of 1505 ha of land, with 43% under cropland, 54% under woodland, and 3% as homestead and roads. Rainfall data was collected at the watershed from raingages located at sites PNI through PN 7. Streams at stations QN I and QN2 were being measured with V-notch weirs. Water levels at the stream was measured using an FW-l Belfort (Friez FWl). The water quality monitoring system was designed to provide comprehensive assessment of the quality of storm runoff and baseflow as influenced by changes in landuse, agronomic, and cultural practices ill the watershed. As this study was concerned with the Nomini Creek Watershed, the separation of storm runoff and baseflow measured at QNI and QN2 was given by the master depletion curve method, and the loadings of baseflow and storm runoff for TN (Total Nitrogen) and TP (Total Phosphorus) were analyzed from 1987 through 1989. The results were studied for the best management practices to reduce contamination and loss of nutrients, (e.g., total nitrogen and total phosphorus) by nonpoint source pollution from agricultural lands.

The Hydrological Simulation Program - FORTRAN (HSPF) was modified to simulate nonpoint pollutant loadings from paddy fields using a field experimental data collected during 2001-2002. The concept of a 'dike height' was added in a modified HSPF code, named HSPF-Paddy, to consider the function of retaining water by a weir at the field outlet. The effect of fertilization on the variances of nutrients on the soil surface and shallow soil layer was described mathematically with a Dirac delta function (or first-order kinetics). As confirmed through model verification, the HSPF-Paddy modifications were shown to represent the function of retaining water, varied ponded water, and surface runoff by forced drain during both rainy and non-rainy seasons and reasonably predicted the water balance and nutrients behavior in paddy fields. It is a distributed watershed model which, with the paddy modifications, can now simulate nonpoint pollutant loadings where paddy fields are dominant, and it can be used to evaluate the effects of paddy fields on the water quality at a basin scale, and assess the impacts of proposed BMPs applied to paddy fields.

The effectiveness of the first flush treatment system using settling process was evaluated to reduce urban nonpoint source pollutant loads to surface water during storm events. A pilot scale system was constructed and tested in the field and surface runoff samples were collected automatically according to pre-defined conditions. Nine rainfall events were tested and average removal efficiencies of TSS (Total Suspended Solid), TP (Total Phosphorus) and TN (Total Nitrogen) were evaluated as 87.4%, 75.3%, and 43.6%, respectively. Concentration and removal efficiency of pollutants were found to be affected by an amount of rainfall and rainfall intensities of the respective events. This seemed to be caused by the greater particulate fractions of first flushed samples than the samples collected in later time periods during the same rainfall events. The study showed that it is possible to remove a significant portion of the nonpoint source pollutant loads in initial rainfall runoff by using a simple settling process for TSS and TP without requiring additional power or chemicals.

Point & nonpoint source pollutant loads were calculated in Juam lake watershed using GIS, and water quality was simulated using water quality model. Point source pollutant loads were estimated using the unit pollutant loads presented by the Ministry of Environment(MOE, 1998). Nonpoint source pollutant loads were estimated using the value of the direct runoff multiplied by expected mean concentration. The direct runoff was calculated using SCS curve number method. Water quality simulation was conducted using WASP model(2001) developed by U.S. EPA. In order to apply the model, Juam lake watershed was divided into 44 subbasins according to slope, elevation, soil type, landuse and precipitation. Then the model was applied to one subbasin. Simulation results were compared to observed values and the result should good agreement with each other.
This work was completed in partial fulfillment of an on-going research ot descover the effective management of urban nonpoint sources. The current data was obtained from the area of Shingal, Kyunni-do. The investigation was are predominant soures of storm-runoff load and drainage. As a result of the investigation, the road was found to be most seriously contaminated and a significant potential source deteriorating the quality of streams and lakes in the vicinity of the town. Thus, in could be concluded that an effective and systematic cleaning technique must be developed as soon as possible and be frequently applied to the road.

Lake water quality assessment information is useful to anyone involved in lake management, from lake owners to lake associations. It provides lake water quality criteria, which can improve the ways how to manage out lake resources and how to measure current conditions. It also provides a knowledge base so that the lakes can be protected and restored. Here, the Freshwater Lake Water Quality Management System(FLAQUM) was developed. The results of FLAQUM application by scenario proved that pollutant load at rainfall by the nonpoint sources was much more than normal times at rainfall. From the result of Scenario I (pollutant source increase case), the concentrations of Boryeong freshwater lake were BOD 9.43mg/L, T-N 4.53 mg/L and T-P 0.21 mg/L, respectively, and those values exceed the standard of agricultural water. And in case of Scenario I and II(the present case) excluding Scenario III (pollutant source decrease case), all of T-N and T-P are either mesotrophication or eutrophication, on the other hand when 60% of pollution source is removed, the concentrations of Scenario III were BOD 3.21 mg/L, T-N 0.95 mg/L, T-P 0.11 mg/L, respectively, and which satisfies the standard of agricultural water quality.
In this study, a method to determine the design capacities of nonpoint source (NPS) pollutant treatment facilities in urban areas was suggested. A facility capacity to treat 80 percent of total SS discharge was estimated by 2-year rainfall - runoff - build-up and wash-off simulation at Goonja drainage district in Seoul. For wash-off simulation, four wash-off models (EMC, RC, EXP, and Joo model) were used. As the results, 80 percent of total SS discharge could be treated with only 7.7~31.4% facility capacity of peak flow. The suggested method and results will provide a guideline to determine design capacities of NPS pollutant treatment facility in urban areas.

Sediment-laden water is problematic in aquatic ecosystem and for hydraulic structures in a watershed, and agriculture area in a watershed is one of source areas of nonpoint source (NPS), since soil surface typically exposures due to agricultural activities. Especially, severe sediment might flow into stream when agricultural area is located near stream like the Imha-dam watershed. Soil erosion is affected by precipitation, therefore there is a need to consider precipitation characteristics in soil erosion and best management practices (BMPs) simulation. The Web-based Spreadsheet Tool for the Estimation of Pollutant Load (STEPL WEB) allows estimating long-term sediment loads and the impact of best management practices to reduce sediment loads. STEPL WEB and predicted precipitation data by MIROC-ESM model was used to estimate sediment loads and its reduction by filter strip and conversion of agricultural area to forest in the future 30 years. The result indicates that approximately 70 % of agricultural area requires filter strip installation or that approximately 50 % of agricultural area needs to be converted to forest, for 41 % of sediment load reduction.
The purpose of this study is to develop a system, which estimates watershed pollutant loading rate through the combination of GIS and computational mode. Also, the applicability of this study was estimated by the application of the above system for Chuncheon City. The detailed results of these studies are as follows; The pollutant loading estimation system was developed for more convenient estimation of pollutant loading rate in watershed, and the system load was minimized by the separation of estimation module for point and non-point source. This system on the basis of GIS is very economical and efficient because it can be applied to other watershed with the watershed map. System modification is not needed. The pollutant loading estimation system for point source was developed to estimate the pollutant loading rate in watershed through the extraction of the proper data from all districts and yearly data and the execution of spatial analysis which is main function of GIS. From the verification result of spatial analysis, real watershed area and the administrative districtarea extracted by spatial analysis were $1,114,893,340.15m^2$ and $1,114,878,683.68m^2$, respectively. It shows that the spatial analysis results were very exact with only 0.001% error. The pollutant loading estimation system for non-point source was developed to calculate the pollutant loading rate through the overlaying of land-use and watershed map after the construction of new land-use map using the land register database with most exact land use classification. Application result for Chuncheon City shows that the proposed system results in one percent land use error while the statistical method results in five percent. More exact nonpoint source pollutant loading was estimated from this system.
