In this study, regression equation was analyzed to estimate non-point source (NPS) pollutant loads in orchard area. Many factors affecting the runoff of NPS pollutant as precipitation, storm duration time, antecedent dry weather period, total runoff density, average storm intensity and average runoff intensity were used as independent variables, NPS pollutant was used as a dependent variable to estimate multiple regression equation. Based on the real measurement data from 2008 to 2012, we performed correlation analysis among the environmental variables related to the rainfall NPS pollutant runoff. Significance test was confirmed that T-P ($R^2=0.89$) and BOD ($R^2=0.79$) showed the highest similarity with the estimated regression equations according to the NPS pollutant followed by SS and T-N with good similarity ($R^2$ >0.5). In the case of regression equation to estimate the NPS pollutant loads, regression equations of multiplied independent variables by exponential function and the logarithmic function model represented optimum with the experimented value.
The water of rivers and lakes in Korea is the main sources for drinking, industrial and agricultural purposes. However, various pollutants washed-off from watershed area make worse and worse the water quality. Particularly, the changes of land uses in watershed area is the main pollutant sources in many cases in Korea, it is usually called to nonpoint pollution sources. In this reason, the Ministry of Environment are programing the total maximum daily load for four major large rivers in order to improve the water quality by controlling the watershed area. Therefore, this research was performed to estimate the total pollutant input from watershed areas to lakes of Ganwol and Boonam located in Chungnamdo. The AGNPS water quality model and monitoring were used to estimate the pollutant loading rates with unit pollutant concentration of each land use. The main landuse of the research area are forest, wet and dry paddy field and small urban area. The research shows that the pollutant sources in Ganwol and Boonam lakes are from the various landuses. In this manuscripts, the results will provide important informations for mitigating the pollutants to the lakes.
In Total Water Pollutant Load Management System of Korea, unit load approach based on land register data is currently used for the estimation of non-point pollutant load. However, a problem raised that land register data could not always reflect the actual land surface coverages which determine runoff characteristics of non-point pollution sources. As a way to overcome this, we tried to establish quantitative relationships between the aerial images (0.4m resolution) which reflect actual land surface coverages and the land registration maps according to the 19 major designated land-use categories in Kyeongan watershed. Analyses showed different relationships according to the land-use categories. Only a few land-use categories including forestry, road and river showed essentially identical and some categories such as orchard, parking lot and sport utility site showed no relationships at all between image data and land register data. Except for the two cases, all the other categories showed statistically significant linear relationships between image data and land register data. The analyses indicate that using high resolution aerial maps is a better way to estimate non-point pollutant load. If the aerial maps are not available, application of the linear relationships as conversion factors of land register data to image data could be an possible option to estimate non-point pollutant loads for the specific land-use categories in Kyeongan watershed.
To provide the basic information for the water quality management of the Sumjin River Basin, delivery ratios for flow duration were studied. Using the day-interval data set of discharge and water quality observed from the Chooryeong-cheon watershed, the flow-duration and discharge-load relation curves for the watershed were established, then the load-duration curve was constructed. Delivery ratios for flow duration were also developed. Delivery ratios showed wide variation according to flow conditions. In general, delivery ratio of high flow condition showed higher value reflecting nonpoint source pollution contribution from the forest dominating watershed. To resolve this problem, a regression model explaining the relation between flow rate and delivery ratio was suggested. The delivery ratios for different flow regime could be used for pollutant load estimation and TMDL (Total maximum daily load) development.
This research analyzed the runoff patterns and estimated unit loads of selected pollutatnts using monitored data conducted for three years in a bridge area. Three estimating methods; the arithmetic average method, the regression method and the rainfall class method were used to estimate the unit load. Results of three estimating methods were compared with the unit pollutant loads from landuses in Korea and the unit pollutant loads from urban watersheds in Milwaukee, USA. Unit load using the arithmetic mean method were found to be overestimated. In terms of TSS, unit loads of two estimate were half lower than that of USA. Estimated TN and TP unit loads of three estimate were lower than that of Ministry of Environment in Korea.
The ministry of Environment, Korea, are designing the TMDL(Total Maximum daily Load) program far 4 major large rivers to improve water quality from possible pollutants. It can be successfully performed as controling of nonpoint pollutants from watershed area. Railway stations are stormwater intensive land use because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions from various activities. Especially the metal pollutants from the railway station were recognized as an important pollutants because of its toxicities. In order to characterize the washed-off pollutants. the monitoring were performed on a railway station during storms. Pollutant concentrations are exponentially decreasing during the storm duration. The 95% confidence interval of pollutant concentrations in an hour storm duration ranges from 61.6 to 115.4mg/L for TSS(mean=88.50mg/L),103.8-244.1mg/L for COD(mean=174 mg/L) and 7.68-17.32mg/L for Oil & Grease(mean=12.5mg/L). The ranges of metals were 39.2-84.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L for total Cu(mean=61.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/L), 14.0-25.8$\mu\textrm{g}$/L for total Pb(mean=19.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/L) and 182.2-376.l $\mu\textrm{g}$/L for total Zn(mean=279.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/L). The first flush criteria for best management practices can be suggested to 50% pollutant mass emissions during 30% of the total flow.
This study was performed to characterize stormwater runoff of pollution material from nonpoint sources during rainfall in drainage basins of Hongjechun watershed, and to suggest management methods to control the first flush of nonpoint sources. We conducted 4 times of field surveys including 3 times of wet period and 1 times of dry period for 5 stations, which consist of 3 stations in main stream of Hongjechun and 1 station in tributaries of Sinyoungchun and Gukichun, respectively. The variation of pollutant concentrations in terms of BOD, COD, SS and TP was large depending on the flow rate of stormwater, while a little change of TN concentration was investigated. Depending on the rainfall event, the difference of flowrates, and runoff loadings was large, while the difference of those for dry wether period was not noticeable for various sub-basins. In the results of unit load calculation, the range of 153-277 kg/ha/yr for BOD, 222-422 kg/ha/yr for COD, 264-432 kg/ha/yr for SS, 40-70kg/ha/yr for TN, and 13-25 kg/ha/yr for TP was obtained for Hongjechun, Sinyoungchun, and Gukichun sub-basins. Compared with the previous studies, the result of this study was founded to be acceptable.
The control of nonpoint source pollution is essentially needed to successfully perform the Total Maximum Daily Load program. Of the various land uses in the nonpoint source, the paved areas such as a parking lot and a bridge are stormwater intensive land uses because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions. This research was performed to understand the magnitude and nature of the stormwater emissions with the purposes of quantifying stormwater pollutant concentrations and mass emission rates from a parking lot and a bridge. Two monitoring sites in Kongju city were equipped with an automatic rainfall gages and an automatic flow meter for accumulating the data such as rainfall, water quality and runoff flow rates. This paper will summarize the metal concentration changes during the storm duration and metal EMCs to characterize the concentration profiles in a parking lot and a bridge. Also a new concept, dynamic EMC, will be proposed to find the relationship between EMC and first flush effect. It can be used to determine the economical treatment criteria in best management practices.
The water of rivers and lakes are affecting by point and nonpoint source pollutions. The point source pollution can be controlled by establishing the treatment plants. However, nonpoint source pollution by various human activities is not easy to be controlled because it is difficult to determine the exits of the water flow and have many exit points. Due to contribution of nonpoint source pollution, the achievement ratio of water quality in rivers and lakes is not high. TMDL is the outstanding water quality control policy because all of the pollutant loadings from the watershed area are counting on the input loads. Our aqua-ecosystem has self-purification process by biological, physical and ecological processes. The self-purification process can remove the pollutant load from background concentrations. Usually forest area is main source of background concentrations. In Korea, about 70% of the national boundary area consists of mountains. This study is conducting as part of long-term monitoring to determine the Event Mean Concentration during a storm. The monitoring was performed on a broad-leaved tree area.
