In this paper, attitude control laws are proposed for an underactuated spacecraft. The stabilization problem of the complete system including the kinematics as well as the dynamics of the spacecraft is addressed. The quaternion parameterization is used. The key idea is that the angular velocity of a uncontrolled axis is first regulated and then, the other states are regulated. Based on numerical simulations, it is conjectured that the closed-loop nonlinear system of a spacecraft with the proposed control laws is globally asymptotically stable. The control law for the stabilization problem around the origin as well as the command following problem are proposed. The numerical examples indicate that the stabilization of an underactuated asymmetric spacecraft can be achieved successfully.

This paper proposes a framework for determining the minimum load shedding for restoring solvability. The framework includes a continuation power flow (CPF) and an optimal power flow (OPF). The CPF parameterizes a specified outage from a set of multiple contingencies causing unsolvable cases, and it traces the path of solutions with respect to the parameter variation. At the nose point of the path, sensitivity analysis is performed in order to achieve the most effective control location for load shedding. Using the control location information, the OPF for locating the minimum load shedding is executed in order to restore power flow solvability. It is highlighted that the framework systematically determines control locations and the proper amount of load shedding. In a numerical simulation, an illustrative example of the proposed framework is shown by applying it to the New England 39 bus system.

This paper proposes a new load torque observer based on the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy method for a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM). A Linear Matrix Inequality(LMI) parameterization of the fuzzy observer gain is given, and the LMI conditions are derived for the existence of the fuzzy load torque observer guaranteeing $\alpha$-stability and linear quadratic performance. In this paper, a nonlinear speed controller is employed to validate the performance of the proposed fuzzy load torque observer, and various simulation results are presented under motor parameter and load torque variations.

The influence of vertical eddy viscosity to the nonlinear interaction of tidal current and wind-induced current is examined using a point model. A zero-equation turbulence model is derived by simplifying the q$^2$-q$^2$1 turbulence model under the assumption that the generation of turbulence kinetic energy is balanced with its dissipation and is further modified to include the depth of frictional influence properly The zero-equation turbulence model is derived and the possibility of resonance in the presence of Coriolis effect is suggested. The amplitudes of tidal currents remain the same regardless of the applied wind stress, but the over-tide component is generated due to the nonlinear interaction of tidal current and wind-induced current. Significant changes in the vertical profile of wind-induced currents can occur according to tide-induced background turbulence. The turbulence model can give rise to misleading results when applied to the wind-driven circulation in the tide-dominated sea such as Yellow Sea unless the tide-induced background turbulence is adequately included in the parameterization of vertical eddy viscosity.
This paper proposes to synthesize facial images from a few parameters for the pose and the expression of their constituent components. This parameterization makes the representation, storage, and transmission of face images effective. But it is difficult to parameterize facial images because variations of face images show a complicated nonlinear manifold in high-dimensional data space. To tackle this problem, we use an LLE (Locally Linear Embedding) technique for a good representation of face images, where the relationship among face images is preserving well and the projected manifold into the reduced feature space becomes smoother and more continuous. Next, we apply a snake model to estimate face feature values in the reduced feature space that corresponds to a specific pose and/or expression parameter. Finally, a synthetic face image is obtained from an interpolation of several neighboring face images in the vicinity of the estimated feature value. Experimental results show that the proposed method shows a negligible overlapping effect and creates an accurate and consistent synthetic face images with respect to changes of pose and/or expression parameters.

This paper considers a simultaneous optimization problem of structure and control systems. The problem is generally formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for the design parameters of mechanical structure and controller. Therefore, it is not easy to obtain the global solutions for practical problems. In this paper, we parameterize all design parameters of the mechanical structure such that the parameters work in the control system as decentralized static output feedback gains. Using this parameterization, we have formulated a simultaneous optimization problem in which the design specification is defined by the Η$_2$and Η$\_$$\infty$/ norms of the closed loop transfer function. So as to lead to a convex problem we approximate the nonlinear terms of design parameters to the linear terms. Then, we propose a convex optimization method that is based on linear matrix inequality (LMI). Using this method, we can surely obtain suboptimal solution for the design specification. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models provide information for weather forecasts. The highly nonlinear and complex interactions in the atmosphere are simplified in meteorological models through approximations and parameterization. Therefore, the simplifications may lead to biases and errors in model results. Although the models have improved over time, the biased outputs of these models are still a matter of concern in meteorological and hydrological studies. Thus, bias removal is an essential step prior to using outputs of atmospheric models. The main idea of statistical bias correction methods is to develop a statistical relationship between modeled and observed variables over the same historical period. The Model Output Statistics (MOS) would be desirable to better match the real time forecast data with observation records. Statistical post-processing methods relate model outputs to the observed values at the sites of interest. In this study three methods are used to remove the possible biases of the real-time outputs of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model in Imjin basin (North and South Korea). The post-processing techniques include the Linear Regression (LR), Linear Scaling (LS) and Power Scaling (PS) methods. The MOS techniques used in this study include three main steps: preprocessing of the historical data in training set, development of the equations, and application of the equations for the validation set. The expected results show the accuracy improvement of the real-time forecast data before and after bias correction. The comparison of the different methods will clarify the best method for the purpose of the forecast skill enhancement in a real-time case study.

Immigration to a nation with a stronger anti-smoking environment has been hypothesized to make smoking less common. However, little is known about how environments influence risk of smoking across the lifecourse. Research suggested a linear decline in smoking over the lifecourse but these associations, in fact, might not be linear. This study assessed the possible nonlinear associations between age and smoking and examined how these associations differed by environment through comparing Koreans in Seoul, South Korea and Korean Americans in California, United States. Data were drawn from population based telephone surveys of Korean adults in Seoul (N=500) and California (N=2,830) from 2001-2002. Locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (lowess) was used to approximate the association between age and smoking with multivariable spline logistic regressions, including adjustment for confounds used to draw population inferences. Smoking differed across the lifecourse between Korean and Korean American men. The association between age and smoking peaked around 35 years among Korean and Korean American men. From 18 to 35 the probability of smoking was 57% higher (95%CI, 40 to 71) among Korean men versus 8% (95%CI, 3 to 19) higher among Korean American men. A similar difference in age after 35, from 40 to 57 years of age, was associated with a 2% (95%CI, 0 to 10) and 20% (95%CI, 16 to 25) lower probability of smoking among Korean and Korean American men. A nonlinear pattern was also observed among Korean American women. Social role transitions provide plausible explanations for the decline in smoking after 35. Investigators should be mindful of nonlinearities in age when attempting to understand tobacco use.

Constant airflow should be kept in order to operate a constant-fired boiler of thermal power plants. Main Bearing Assembly Unit which rotates the ventilation fan does very important role to maintain constant airflow. However, the demand to the output of power is getting increased while the quality level of coal is getting worse than the initial level of design criteria. Especially cost wise operation considering increasing output and the difficulty to supply good quality coal drive increasing supply of low quality coal. As a result, the service life of Main Bearing Assembly is getting shorter till 2~3 years which is just a half of the life of original design. In this study, what causes to shorten the service life of Main Bearing Assembly Unit is analyzed through the reverse engineering and analysis and how to improve the service life more than two times to current situation is explained.

As on-line purchases is activated, customers' demand increases for the realistic and accurate digital information of a product design. In this paper, we propose a practical method that can generate a realistic 3D model of a real product using a 3D geometry obtained by a 3D scanner and its photographic images. In order to register images to the 3D geometry, the camera focal length, the CCD scanning aspect ratio and the transformation matrix between the camera coordinate and the 3D object coordinate must be determined. To perform this 2D-3D registration with consideration of computational complexity, a three-step method is applied, which consists of camera calibration, determination of a temporary optimum translation vector (TOTV) and nonlinear optimization for three rotational angles. A case study for a metallic coated industrial part, of which the colour appearance is hardly obtained by a 3D colour scanner has performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
