xK2O-(33.3-x)BaO-16.7TiO2-50SiO2(mole%) 유리의 비선형 광학 및 형광 특성 (Nonlinear, Optical and Luminescent Properties of xK2O-(33.3-x)BaO-16.7TiO2-50SiO2(mole%) Glasses)

  • Transparent glass-ceramics containing fresnoite crystals have been prepared by controlled heat treatment in $K_2O-BaO-TiO_2-SiO_2$ and their nonlinear optical and luminescent properties were investigated using Maker fringe method and Spectrofluorometer. The second harmonic generation was observed in all samples and the values decreased with increasing $K_2O$ content. The luminescence of blue light at ${\sim}482nm$ could be observed and it was shown that the luminescent property was controlled by the $K_2O$ content.

Planar Optical Waveguide Temperature Sensor Based on Etched Bragg Gratings Considering Nonlinear Thermo-optic Effect

  • This paper demonstrates the development of optical temperature sensor based on the etched silica-based planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include design and fabrication of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating optical temperature sensor. The typical bandwidth and reflectivity of the surface etched grating has been ∼0.2nm and ∼9%, respectively, at a wavelength of ∼1552nm. The temperature-induced wavelength change is found to be slightly non-linear over ∼200$^{\circ}C$ temperature range. Typically, the temperature-induced fractional Bragg wavelength shift measured in this experiment is 0.0132nm/$^{\circ}C$ with linear curve fit. Theoretical models with nonlinear temperature effect for the grating response based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.

  • $KNbO_3$is one of the best materials for efficient nonlinear frequency conversion, due to its large nonlinear optical coefficient ($d_{33}$ = 20.6 pm/V), wide transparency range (0.4 ~ 5 $\mu$m) and freedom from photorefractive effects. Quasi-phase-matched second harmonic generation using periodically poled $KNbO_3$ (PPKN) crystals has been reported. Here we report on fabrication of PPKN and demonstration of a pulsed optical param etric oscillator (QPM OPO) pumped by an Nd:YAG laser. (omitted)

  • Advent of lasers offering high intensity beam has opened the glass to the nonlinear optic (NLO). The high electric field associated with such laser beams can be so large that high order components of the glass polarization can be measured. Such development is of scientific and technological interests in particular in systems involving an intensity-dependent refractive index and/or ultra-fast response (<10$\^$-12/s). From a scientific viewpoint the NLO response intensity must be understood as a function of the glass composition. On the other hand, large family of applications are presently under investigation in various fields of optical materials or systems e.g. laser glasses for fusion energy, soliton propagation for ultra-long distances, ultra-fast-switching, optical storage etc....(omitted)

Polymer-Based Devices for Optical Communications

  • Polymers are emerging as new alternative materials for optical communication devices. We developed two types of polymer-based devices for optical communications. One type is for ultra high-speed signal processing that uses nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers in such devices as electro-optic (EO) Mach-Z${\ddot{e}} $ hnder (MZ) modulators and EO 2${\times}$2 switches. The other is for WDM optical communications that use low-loss optical polymers in such devices as 1${\times}$2, 2${\times}$2, 4-arrayed 2${\times}$2 digital optical switches (DOSs) and 16${\times}$16 arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) routers. For these devices, we synthesized a polyetherimide-disperse red 1 (PEI-DR1) side chain NLO polymer and a low-loss optical polymer known as fluorinated polyaryleneethers (FPAE). This paper presents the details of our development of these polymeric photonic devices considering all aspects from materials to packaging.

  • 진공급냉법을 이용하여 단성분계 $Sb_2O_3$ 유리를 제조하였다. 선형굴절율은 500-1000 nm 범위내에서 측정하였으며, 굴절율은 633 nm에서 2.0이었다. 에너지갭은 3.38 eV 이었으며, 3차 비선형 광학 감수율을 THG법을 이용하여 측정하였으며 단성분계 Silica 유리보다도 20배 큰 $5.68{\times}10^{-13}$ esu의 측정값을 얻었다.

  • The properties for self-frequency doubling (SFD) is unique phenomena for a small number of special single crystals. It is known that there are serious limitations to vary the concentration of active ions, for example high doping of active ions from 1 to 50 atomic %, in nonlinear materials. Until now, the Nd:YAl$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ (YAB) and Nd:(Ce,Gd)Sc$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ (CSB) crystals with high doping rates are well studied for the application of SFD purpose. They have much useful SFD properties, but also have big problems in crystal growth. In case of YAB crystal, it can be grown by solution melt method with very low growth rates and easy occurrence of inclusions. In case of CSB crystal, it has optically heterogeneity problems because of disarrangement of ions in huntite structure [1]. These problems make above crystals not so attractive for optical applications. Some popular nonlinear materials, such as LiNbO$_3$(LN), KTiOPO$_4$(KTP), LiB$_3$O$_{5}$ (LBO) crystals, are impossible to substitute by Rare Earth activators because of their crystallo-chemical problems of structure. When we dope active ions with the requisite concentrations for laser generation, it results in decreasing of optical quality of crystals or destroying of acentrosymmetric structure. (omitted)d)

  • We constructed Langmuir trough for the ultra-thin films (from a few tens {{{{ ANGSTROM }}) of nonlinear optical organic materials. Surface pressure - area isotherm for the tetracosanoic acid which is a fatty acids, was recorded and Langmuir -Blodgett films was deposited using it. The homogenity was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

  • Optical parametric oscillator(OPO) has been used to generate coherent and tunable laser source with birefringent phase-matching technique in various nonlinear materials. In birefringent phase-matching, the output wavelength is controlled with angle or temperature tuning of the refractive index. However these tuning methods have several limitations such as restriction of tuning wavelength due to reasonable angular and temperature tuning ranges, Poynting vector walk-off which limits the interaction length, and thermal stabilization time.
